Vortex-induced vibrations are a type of flow-induced vibrations caused by alternating lift forces. With increasing demand for renewable energy, the application of vortex-induced vibrations to renewable energy has been widely studied. Vortex-induced vibrations for aquatic clean energy (VIVACE) converter is a renewable energy device that generates electricity from rivers or oceans using vortex-induced vibrations. To increase the design life and power harnessing capacity of the VIVACE converter, the estimation of fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations is essential. Herein, vortex-induced vibrations were experimentally tested, and their amplitude and frequency response were measured. The amplitude results showed four different branches: initial branch, upper branch, lower branch, and desynchronization range. According to the fluid force coefficient results, the maximum lift coefficient occurred at the upper branch. Additionally, a mathematical model is proposed to estimate fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations without using measurement devices. This mathematical model enables the estimation of fluid force coefficients and phase lag using amplitude and frequency response of vortex-induced vibrations.
After over a century of effort by researchers and engineers, the problem of bluff body flow, in particular vortex shedding frequency, remains almost entirely in the empirical, descriptive realm of knowledge. Computational methods have been systematically applied for vortex-induced vibrations of the cable-stayed bridge with steel composite deck by unsteady wind loadings due to vortex-shedding. The focus of this paper is to predict the vortex-induced vibration of the cable-stayed bridge with steel composite deck based computational fluid dynamics(CFD).

Numerical Simulation was performed to investigate the role of vortex generator. Vortex generator installed on the upper surface of the wing, generates vortex flow, mimic the external flow with boundary layer flow and transfer energy from outside to wall boundary. Vortex generator, thus, retards the flow separation and increases the lift and drag of the wing.

Vortex flow fundamentals have been investigating for about hundred years and many distinguished features had been discovered and comprehensively studied over that time. Due to unique hydrodynamic features vortex flows are now widely used in many industrial applications, including energy and power systems. combustion chambers. fuel sprayers. heat exchangers. clean-up systems. drying chambers. Up to recently aerospace engineers employed vortex flow only in combustion systems to stabilize a flame zone or in advanced heat exchangers to enhance heat transfer processes. This paper provides an overview of some recently developed aerothermal vortex technologies applied to aerospace engineering.
In this study, a program to design a multi-stage axial compressor is developed wi th mean-line analysis and vortex methods. In a preliminary design stage, a method. to design in a short time is needed and mean-line analysis is usually used for this purpose. Arbitrary pressure ratio and reaction can be assigned to generate overall geometry and several vortex methods are adopted to consider the radial distribution of velocity and reaction. The variation of performance, when we use free vortex, forced vortex, and exponential method, is compared and discussed.

The turbulence structure of e. tip vortex generated by e. fixed wing was investigated with the use of two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry. The velocity field, composed of circumferential end axial components, was measured on the vertical section to the vortex trail, located at 2C downstream from the wing tip in the incoming flow condition of $Re=2.24{\times}10^5$. A quasi 3-dimensional measurement technique by use of 2-dimensional LDV system was suggested for Reynolds stresses and the higher moments. The validity of this technique was confirmed with the uncertainty analysis. The budget of the turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed by those results in the radial direction of the vortex core. It is resulted that the production is to be very likely balanced with the dissipation in most range of the vortex core.
A vortex sheet is susceptible to the Kelvin-Helmhotz instability, which leads to a singularity at finite time. The vortex blob model provided a regularization for the motion of vortex sheets in an inviscid fluid. In this paper, we consider the blob model for viscous vortex sheets and present a linear stability analysis for regularized sheets. We show that the diffusing viscous vortex sheet is unstable to small perturbations, regardless of the regularization, but the viscous sheet in the sharp limit becomes stable, when the regularization is applied. Both the regularization parameter and viscosity damp the growth rate of the sharp viscous vortex sheet for large wavenumbers, but the regularization parameter gives more significant effects than viscosity.

In the idealized model problem of the interaction between a planar travelling shock and a symmetric vortex, the physics of shock distortion and quadrupole sound generation are well known to many researchers. However, the authors have distinguished the weak waves reflected and transmitted by the complicated photograph images obtained from a shock tube experiment. In this paper, we introduces a parametric study based on Navier-Stokes simulation and Rankin vortex model to see the difference of shock deformation shapes. Four combination of the strength of shock and vortex are respectively selected from a parameter plane of shock and vortex strength extended to the strong vortex region. The result shows clearly discernable wave morphology for the main parameters, which is not yet explicitly mentioned by other researchers.
When a vortex diffracts upon encountering a vortex, many strong and weak waves are produced in the course of interaction. They are the cause of shock wave attenuation and noise production. This phenomenon is fundamental to understanding the more complex supersonic turbulent Jet noise. In this paper we have reviewed the research on shock-vortex interaction we have carried on last seven years. We have computationally investigated the parameter effect. When a shock is strong, shock diffraction pattern becomes complex since the slip lines from the triple points on Mach stem curl into the vortex, causing an entropy layer. When the vortex is unstable, vortexlets are brought about each of which make shock diffraction of a reduced intensity. Strong vortex produces quadrupole noise as it impinges into a vortex. Elementary interaction models such as shock splitting, shock reflection, and shock penetration are presented based on shock tube experiment. These models are also verified by computational approach. They easily explain production and propagation of the aforementioned quadrupole noise, Diverging acoustics are explained in terms of shock-vortexlet interactions for which a computational model Is constructed.
