  • This study investigates the durability of car body and the safety of passenger inside car body in the case of the impact contact at passenger and car body. In case of front impact contact, maximum von Mises equivalent stress and principal stress become 3240.7MPa and 1634MPa respectively at the rear part of car body and the neck of dummy. And maximum total deformation occurred with 14.145mm at the hand of dummy. In case of side impact contact, maximum von Mises equivalent stress and principal stress become 7687.9MPa and 1690.7MPa respectively at the front part of car body and the lap of dummy. And maximum total deformation occurred with 16.414 mm at the foot of dummy. In case of rear impact contact, maximum von Mises equivalent stress and principal stress become 2366.6MPa and 1447MPa respectively at the front part of car body and the neck of dummy. And maximum total deformation occurred with 7.548mm at the rear part of car body. As the maximum von-Mises stress at side impact is shown with more than 700MPa as over two times at front or rear impact the danger of car body is increased. The great possibility of damage is shown at neck and hand of dummy with more than total displacement of 10mm.

  • Finite-element analyses were conducted to investigate the thermal stress in 3-dimensional stacked wafers package containing through-silicon-via (TSV), which is being widely used for 3-Dimensional integration. With finite element method (FEM), thermal stress was analyzed with the variation of TSV diameter, bonding diameter, pitch and TSV height. It was revealed that the maximum von Mises stresses occurred at the edge of top interface between Cu TSV and Si and the Si to Si bonding site. As TSV diameter increased, the von Mises stress at the edge of TSV increased. As bonding diameter increased, the von Mises stress at Si to Si bonding site increased. As pitch increased, the von Mises stress at Si to Si bonding site increased. The TSV height did not affect the von Mises stress. Therefore, it is expected that smaller Cu TSV diameter and pitch will ensure mechanical reliability because of the smaller chance of plastic deformation and crack initiation.

  • Statement of problem. Platform switching in implant prosthesis has been used for esthetic and biological purpose. But there are few reports for this concept. Purpose. The purpose of this study is evaluation of platform switching in wide implant by three dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and Methods. The single implant and prosthesis was modeled in accordance with the geometric designs for Osstem implant system. Three-dimensional finite element models were developed for (1) a wide diameter 3i type titanium implant 5 mm in diameter, 13 mm in length with wide cemented abutment, titanium alloy abutment screw, and prosthesis (2) a wide diameter 3i type titanium implant 5 mm in diameter, 13 mm in length with regular cemented abutment, titanium alloy abutment screw and prosthesis(platform switching) was made for finite element analysis. The abutment screws were subjected to a tightening torque of 30 Ncm. The amount of preload was hypothesized to 650N, and round and flat type prostheses were loaded to 200 N. Four loading offset point (0, 2, 4, 6 mm from the center of the implants) were evaluated. Models were processed by the software programs HyperMesh and ANSA. The PAM-CRASH 2G simulation software was used for analysis of stress. The PAM-VIEW and HyperView were used for post processing. Results. The results from experiment were as follows; 1. von Mises stress value is increased in order of bone, abutment, implant and abutment screw. 2. von Mises stress of abutment screw is lower when platform switching. 3. von Mises stress of implant is lower when platform switching until loading offset 4 mm. 4. von Mises stress of abutment is similar between each other. 5. von Mises stress of bone is slightly higher when platform switching. Conclusion. The von Mises stress pattern of implant components is favor when platform switch ing but slightly higher in bone stress distribution than use of wide abutment. The research about stress distribution is essential for investigation of the cortical bone loss.

  • Statement of problem : Dental implant which has been developed gradually through many experiments and clinical applications is presently used to various dental prosthetic treatments. To conduct a successful function of implant prosthesis in oral cavity for a long time, it is important that not only structure materials must have the biocompatibility, but also the prosthesis must be designed for the stress, which is occurred in occlusion, to scatter adequately of load support. Therefore, it is essential to give the consideration about the stress analysis of supporting tissues for higher successful rates. Purpose : Recently, many implant manufacturing company produce various taper design of root form implant, the fixture is often selected. However, the stress analysis of taper form fixture still requires more studies. Material and method : This study we make the element models that five implant fixture; Branemark system(Nobel Biocare, Gothenberg, Sweden), Camlog system(Altatec, Germany), Astra system(Astra Tech, Sweden), 3i system(Implant Innovations Inc, USA), Avana system(Osstem, Korea) were placed in the area of mandibular first premolar and prosthesis fabricated, which we compared with stress distribution using the three-dimension finite element analysis under two loading condition. Results : This study compares the aspect of stress distribution of each system with the standard of Von mises stress, among many resulted from finite element analysis so that this research gets the following results. 1. In all implant system, oblique loading of maximum Von mises stress of implant, alveolar bone and crown is higher than vertical loading of those. 2. Regardless of loading conditions and type of system, cortical bone which contacts with implant fixture top area has high stress, and cancellous bone has a little stress. under the vertical loading, maximum Von mises stress is more higher in order of Branemark, Camlog, Astra, 3i, Avana. under the horizontal loading, maximum Von mises is more higher in order of Camlog, Branemark, Astra, 3i, Avana.

  • This study examined the distribution of bone mineral density(BMD) and the von Mises stress in the patella. The BMD of eighteen patellae were determined by using quantitative computed tomography and imaging analysis software. It was found that the BMD of the patella varied with location. BMD values were largest at the superior and lateral regions and decreased inferiorly and medially. This distribution appeared to correspond to the organization of trabeculae within the patella. A two-dimensional finite element analysis was performed on each patella. It was also found that the maximum von Mises stress in the patella occurred along the cortical shell on the non-articular surface. The trabecular von Mises stress existed in the posterior region of the patella. These findings demonstrated the potential for finite element studies in vivo. Further, such studies may lead to the development of custom-made, patient-specific patella prostheses.

  • Purpose: Zirconia is differentiated from other ceramics because of its high resistance to corrosion and wear, excellent flexural strength (900~1400 MPa), and high hardness. Dental zirconia with proven mechanical/biological stability is suitable for the manufacture of implants. However, there are limited in vivo studies evaluating stress distribution in zirconia compared with that in titanium implants and studies analyzing finite elements. This study was conducted to evaluate the stress distribution of the supporting bone surrounding zirconia and titanium implants using the finite element analysis method. Methods: For finite element analysis, a single implant-supported restoration was designed. Using a universal analysis program, eight occlusal points were set in the direction of the occlusal long axis. The occlusal load was simulated at 700 N. Results: The zirconia implant (47.7 MPa) von Mises stress decreased by 5.3% in the upper cortical bone compared with the titanium implant (50.2 MPa) von Mises stress. Similarly, the zirconia implant (20.8 MPa) von Mises stress decreased by almost 4% in the cancellous bone compared with the titanium implant (21.7 MPa) von Mises stress. The principal stress in the cortical and cancellous bone exhibited a similar propensity to von Mises stress. Conclusion: In the supporting bone, the zirconia implant is able to reduce bone resorption caused by mechanically transferred stress. It is believed that the zirconia implant can be a potential substitute for the titanium implant by reinforcing aesthetic characteristics and improving stress distribution.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of posts with different morphologies on stress distribution in an endodontically treated mandibular premolar by using finite element models (FEMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. A mandibular premolar was modeled using the ANSYS software program. Two models were created to represent circular and oval fiber posts in this tooth model. An oblique force of 300 N was applied at an angle of $45^{\circ}$ to the occlusal plane and oriented toward the buccal side. von Mises stress was measured in three regions each for oval and circular fiber posts. RESULTS. FEM analysis showed that the von Mises stress of the circular fiber post (426.81 MPa) was greater than that of the oval fiber post (346.34 MPa). The maximum distribution of von Mises stress was in the luting agent in both groups. Additionally, von Mises stresses accumulated in the coronal third of root dentin, close to the post space in both groups. CONCLUSION. Oval fiber posts are preferable to circular fiber posts in oval-shaped canals given the stress distribution at the postdentin interface.

  • This paper presents the stress and displacement characteristics of oil pipe using the finite element analysis. Displacement in axial direction and von Mises stress of a pipe were analyzed with three design factors, which are the pipe thickness, the corrugation pitch and the corrugation height, under uniform oil pressure. The FE computed results are presented between a conventional round pipe and a rectangular pipe, which is manufactured in this study. The computed FE results show that maximum displacement in axial direction and von Mises stress of pipe are increased linearly as the oil pressure increases. Also, they are increased linearly as the corrugation pitch, corrugation height and pipe thickness increases. von Mises stress of a rectangular pipe at the edge increases sharply compared with that of a conventional round pipe. Therefore, the strength of rectangular pipe is superior to that of a conventional round pipe.

  • Designing a morphologically well-fitted hip implant to a patient anatomy is desirable to improve surgical outcomes since a commercial ready-made hip implant may not well conform to the patient joint. In this study, biomechanical stability of patient-specific hip implants with two different stem lengths was compared and discussed using a 3D finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA results in this study showed that an increase in stem length brings about more the peaked von-Mises stress (PVMS) in the prosthesis and less in the femur. However the decrease in von-Mises stress in the femur causes stress shielding phenomenon that usually leads to considerable bone resorption. Although, in biomechanical stability point of view, this work recommends the use of smaller stems, the length of stem must be determined by considering both the von-Mises stress and the stress-shielding phenomenon.

  • Conjugate heat transfer analysis for an ethylene furnace was carried out based on numerical simulation. Detailed distributions of velocity vectors, chemical species, and temperature inside the furnace are presented and discussed. Von Mises stress and heat flux at the tube surface were also evaluated to elucidate mechanisms regarding failure of the tube. Maximum stress was found at the upstream elbow of the tube, which did not coincide with the location of maximum heat flux. This implies that thermal stress at a steady state would not be a dominant component of the stress. Degradation of the material, as well as the system arrangement, should be considered in order to accurately predict the lifetime of the tube material in the furnace.
