  • Local two-phase flow parameters of subcooled flow boiling in inclined annulus were measured to investigate the effect of inclination on the internal flow structure. Two-conductivity probe technique was applied to measure local gas phasic parameters, including void fraction, vapor bubble frequency, chord length, vapor bubble velocity and interfacial area concentration. Local liquid velocity was measured by Pilot tube. Experiments were conducted for three angles of inclination; 0$^{\circ}$(vertical), 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$. The system pressure was maintained at atmospheric pressure. The range of average void fraction was up to 10% and the average liquid superficial velocities were less than 1.3 m/sec. The results of experiments showed that the distributions of two-phase How parameters were influenced by the angle of channel inclination. Especially, the void fraction and chord length distributions were strongly affected by the increase of inclination angle, and flow pattern transition to slug flow was observed depending on the How conditions. The profiles of vapor velocity, liquid velocity and interfacial area concentration were found to be affected by the non-symmetric bubble size distribution in inclined channel. Using the measured distributions of local phasic parameters, an analysis for predicting average void fraction was performed based on the drift flux model and flowing volumetric concentration. And it was demonstrated that the average void fraction can be more appropriately presented in terms of flowing volumetric concentration.

  • DC Bus Electrolytic capacitors have been widely used in power conversion system because they can achieve high capacitance and voltage ratings with volumetric efficiency and low cost. This type of capacitors have been traditionally used for filtering, voltage smoothing, by-pass and other many applications in power conversion circuits requiring a cost effective and volumetric efficiency components. Unfortunately, electrolytic capacitors are some of the weakest components in power electronic converter. Many papers have proposed different methods or algorithms to determinate the ESR and/or capacitance C for fault diagnosis of the electrolytic capacitor. However, both ESR and C vary with frequency and temperature. Accurate knowledge of both values at the capacitors operating conditions is essential to achieve the best reference data of fault judgement. According to parameter analysis, the capacitance increases with temperature and the ESR decreases. Higher frequencies make the ESR and C to decrease. Analysis results show that the proposed electrolytic capacitor parameter estimation technique can be applied to reference signal of capacitor diagnosis systems successfully.

  • Characteristics of gas-liquid mass transfer and interfacial area were investigated in a bubble column of diameter and height of 0.102 m and 2.5 m, respectively. Effects of gas and liquid velocities on the volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient ($k_La$), interfacial area (a) and liquid side true mass transfer coefficient ($k_L$) were examined. The interfacial area and volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient were determined directly by adopting the simultaneous physical desorption of $O_2$ and chemical absorption of $CO_2$ in the column. The values of $k_La$ and a increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid velocity in the bubble column which was operated in the churn turbulent flow regime. The value of $k_L$ increased with increasing gas velocity but did not change considerably with increasing liquid velocity. The liquid side mass transfer was found to be related closely to the liquid circulation as well as the effective contacting frequency between the bubbles and liquid phases.

  • Food and feeding habits of Labeobarbus intermedius were studied from the newly constructed Ribb Reservoir, Ethiopia during the dry (December-March) season and wet season (June-August) of 2021. The objective of the study was to determine the diet composition, seasonal variation, and ontogenetic dietary shift in the diets of the dominant cyprinid fish in Ribb Reservoir. In this study, frequency of occurrence and volumetric analysis methods were used to present the results. From a total of 203 fish samples, 132 (65%) guts contained food items. Macrophytes (29.4%), phytoplankton (27.2%), detritus (14.8%), and insects (13.6%) were the major food items in the diets volumetrically. During the dry season, L. intermedius was mainly dependent on phytoplankton (58.2%), insects (15.2%), and zooplankton (13.7%) volumetrically. Whereas, macrophytes (50.3%) and detritus (23.3%) were the dominant food items in the wet season. The frequency occurrence and volumetric contribution of the diets of L. intermedius varied significantly (χ2 test, p < 0.05) between seasons. Schoener's diet overlap index revealed a slight ontogenetic dietary shift in the diets of L. intermedius. While insects, nematodes, and zooplankton were the main diets of small-sized L. intermedius, macrophytes and detritus were ingested by large-sized L. intermedius. Generally, L. intermedius fed both plant and animal-origin food items and is considered an omnivorous feeder in Ribb Reservoir.

  • This study was conducted to develop a soil moisture meter using capacitance probe. A parallel cylinder type capacitance probe (C-probe) was fabricated The 5 MHz of crystal oscillator was constructed to detect the capacitance change of the C-probe with moist soil. A third order polynomial regression model for volumetric water content having oscillation frequency changes at 5 MHz as independent variables presented the determination coefficient of 0.979 and root mean square error of $0.031\;cm^{3}cm^{3}$ for all soil samples. A prototype soil moisture meter consisting of the sample container, C-probe, oscillator, frequency counter and related signal procession units presented the correlation coefficient of 0.987 and the root mean square error of $0.032\;cm^{3}cm^{3}$ as compared with the oven drying method for unknown soil samples.

  • This study was to verify and calibrate seven kinds of soil water sensors for volumetric soil water content(VSWC) measurement under field. Types of sensors were TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) and FDR(Frequency Domain Reflectometry). Two kinds of TDR were TRIME(profile type), and Mini-TRASE(rod type). Five kinds of FDR were EasyAG, EnviroSCAN, PR-1(profile type), and WET-1(rod type). VSWC by TRIME and Mini-TRASE compared with VSWC by soil core showed the standard error of about 2.4%, and 1.4% which is the smallest value among all the sensors used in the experiment, respectively. The errors of EasyAG and EnviroSCAN analyzed with scaled frequency(SF) were about 2.6%, and 2.8% and those by 1 versus 1 correspondence were about 2.6%, and 2.6%, respectively. WET-1 showed about 2.0% of error, which is the smallest value among errors by FDR sensors. PR-1 with the error of about 4.7% should be hard for application in field. Therefore, users on soil water sensors have to take into consideration the errors of sensors revealed after the calibration for the correct measurement of VSWC in field. The rest except for PR-1 among the sensors could be used for VSWC measurement with 1.4~2.6% error.

  • Measurements of volumetric water content and saturation of porous media are very important factors in understanding the physical characteristics of soil, groundwater recharge by rainfall, pollutant movement, and slope failure. To measure such physical parameters, a permittivity method using electromagnetic wave is applied and use is made of the special permittivity response of understand to water and ethanol. In particular, the estimation is required because permittivity is influenced by the nature of the underground environment. In this study, we carried out experiments on the relative dependency of soil density, temperature and salinity of standard sand and granitic weathered soil using FDR-V system (Frequency domain reflectometry with vector network analyzer) within a frequency range of 1 - 18 GHz. The results of the study showed that the dielectric constants of standard sand and granitic weathered soil increased with increased volumetric water content of soil. However, the dependency of soil density was found to be a little low. Changes of dielectric constant with temperature appeared definitely in the real part of 1 GHz. That is, the dielectric constant of real part at 1 GHz of water and standard sand increased with the rise of temperature. However, ethanol showed decreased tendency. The study also showed that dielectric constant increased with increase in salinity at imaginary part of 1 GHz. It could be concluded from this study FDR-V system can adequately measure the physical properties of soil and the degree of salinity concentration of porous media within 1 GHz frequency range using dielectric constant.

  • A three dimensional linear frequency-domain lifting surface panel method was used for the aerodynamic analysis of axial flow type micro-fans. As proven by the duct modeling, the tip clearance of the micro-fans tested is large enough to ignore the calculated effect of the duct system. As the numerical results and experimental data agreed well in the operating point region, the method was applicable in the parametric studies to determine the design parameters of axial flow fans. Experiments on micro-fans were carried out based on KS B 6311. The newly designed micro-fan showed improvements in both static pressure rise and volumetric flow rate compared to the existing fans at a given operating condition. No detection of surging and the smooth characteristic curve proved the improvement in performance. To reduce the fan noise in the fan design, it was necessary to make use of the frequency spectrum analysis data. Measurement of sound pressure level for micro-fans was conducted based on KS B 6361 and KS A 0705. The peak - which occurs at blade passage frequency and its higher harmonics due to the fan noise - was not detected. This justifies the design methodology of the blade.

  • Log cross sections of yellow poplar were dried in a radio frequency vacuum (RFV) dryer under alternating vacuum and release (AVR) process. The average moisture content (MC), temperature and vapor pressure at the volumetric center were monitored as functions of time. Three different log thicknesses (33, 60 and 75mm) were tested. The results show that the AVR process caused an increase in the drying rate when the moisture content was above fiber saturation point (FSP, about 30% MC) but that it had an inverse effect on the drying rate when the MC was below FSP. The effect of the AVR process on the drying rate decreased, and the severity of heart checks increased, with the increase in the thickness of the specimens.

  • Two kinds of eddy current probes are mainly used to perform the steam generator tube integrity assesment in NPPs. The first one is the bobbin probe using for inspection of volumetric defect like a fretting wear. The second one is the rotating probe using for inspection of non-volumetric defect like a crack. The eddy current probe is one of the essential components which consist of the whole eddy current examination system, and provides a decisive data for the tube integrity in accordance with acceptance criteria described in specific procedures. The design of ECT probe is especially important to improve examination results because the quality of acquired ECT data is depended on the probe design characteristics, such as coil geometry, electrical properties, operation frequency. In this study, it is analyzed that the coil winding number of differential bobbin probe affects the electrical properties of the probe. Eddy current bobbin probes for the steam generator tubes in NPPs are designed and fabricated according to the results. Experiment shows that the change in coil winding number has much effects on the optimum inspection frequency determined by the tube geometry and material. Therefore, the coil winding number in bobbin probe is very important in the probe design. In this study, a basis of the coil winding number for the eddy current bobbin probe design for steam generator tubes in NPPs is established.
