The volumetric solar receiver is a key element of solar power plants using air. The solar flux distribution inside the receiver should be a priori known for its heat transfer modeling. Previous works have not considered characteristics of the solar flux although they change with radiative properties of receiver materials and receiver geometries. A numerical method, which is based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method, was developed in the current work. The solar flux distributions inside multi-channeled volumetric solar receivers were calculated when light is concentrated at the KIER solar furnace. It turned out that 99 percentage of the concentrated solar energy is absorbed within 15 mm charmel length for the charmel radius smaller than 1.5 mm. If the concentrated light is assumed to be diffuse, the absorbed solar energy at the charmel entrance region is overpredicted while the light penetrates more deeply into the charmel. The developed method will help understand the solar flux when only a part of concentrated light is of interest. Furthermore, if the presented results are applied for heat transfer modeling of multi-channeled volumetric solar receivers, one could examine effects of receiver charmel properties and shape on air temperature profiles.

Objectives: Any change in maxilla and mandible position can alter the upper airway, and any decrease in the upper airway can cause sleep disorders. Thus, it is necessary to assess airway changes after repositioning of the maxilla and mandible during orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate linear and volumetric changes in the upper airway after bimaxillary surgery to correct class III malocclusion via cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to identify correlations between linear and volumetric changes. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study. CBCTs from 10 class III patients were evaluated before surgery and three months after. The Wilcoxon one-sample test was used to evaluate the differences in measurements before and after surgery. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to test the correlation between linear and volumetric changes. Results: The results show that the nasopharyngeal space increased significantly, and that this increase correlated with degree of maxillary advancement. No significant changes were found in volumes before and after surgery. A correlation was found between linear and volumetric oropharyngeal changes. Conclusion: Bimaxillary surgical correction of class III malocclusion did not cause statistically significant changes in the posterior airway space.
We proposed the improved Langmuir adsorption relations considering volume change effect of coal matrix during primary production of CBM and Enhanced-CBM with injection of carbon dioxide or CCS in coalseam but also volumetric strain. To verify this model, experimental data of pure gas adsorption such as $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2$ on coals were used to compare conventional Langmuir model with this model. From the results, we obtained that the larger adsorption capacity of coal and the higher adsorption affinity of gas, the larger error occur with Langmuir model. Using this model, however, we found not only substantially better fit in all condition but also reasonable volumetric strain of the coal matrix. We also applied this volume modified pure gas adsorption model to the IAS model to describe gas adsorption and volumetric strain for mixed gas. This modified-IAS model fitting experimental data by Hall et al(1994) improved accuracy of mixed gas adsorption calculation compared with conventional model.
The purpose of this study is to measure the volumetric water content of unsaturated soils during drying and wetting process by using volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) incorporated with time domain reflectometry (TDR). The VPPE consists of a pressure cell, a pressure regulator, a burette system and a TDR probe. Two samples with different initial void ratios were prepared in the pressure cell, and the air pressure at the range of 0.1 kPa - 50 kPa was applied to adjust the matric suction by the pressure regulator. The burette system was used to measure the volumetric water content change of the sample according to the matric suction. In addition, the TDR probe, installed in the cell, was used to evaluate the dielectric constant from the reflected signal of the electromagnetic wave at the probe. The volumetric water content of specimen was estimated by the empirical equation between the volumetric water content and dielectric constant, which was calibrated with the Jumunjin sand. The test results show that the volumetric water content calculated by TDR probe is strongly correlated to the measured value by burette system. The hysteresis occurs during drying and wetting process. Furthermore, the degree of hysteresis reduces in the repeated process. This study suggests that TDR may be effectively used to evaluate the water content soil for the determination of water characteristic curve of unsaturated soils.

Purpose: Generally, patients are noticed to store denture in water when removed from the mouth. However, few studies have reported the advantage of volumetric change in underwater storage over dry storage. To be a reference in defining the proper denture storage method, this study aims to evaluate the volumetric change and dimensional deformation in case of underwater and dry storage. Materials and methods: Definitive casts were scanned by a model scanner, and denture bases were designed with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Twelve denture bases (upper 6, lower 6) were printed with 3D printer. Printed denture bases were invested and flasked with heat-curing method. 6 upper and 6 lower dentures were divided into group A and B, and each group contains 3 upper and 3 lower dentures. Group A was stored dry at room temperature, group B was stored underwater. Group B was scanned at every 24 hours for 28 days and scanned data was saved as stereolithography (SLA) file. These SLA files were analyzed to measure the difference in volumetric change of a month and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for statistical analysis. Best-fit algorithm was used to overlap and 3-dimensional color-coded map was used to observe the changing pattern of impression surface. Results: No significant difference was found in volumetric changes regardless of the storage methods. In dry-stored denture base, significant changes were found in the palate of upper jaw and posterior lingual border of lower jaw in direction away from the underlying tissue, maxillary tuberosity of upper jaw and retromolar pad area of lower jaw in direction towards the underlying tissue. Conclusion: Storing the denture underwater shows less volumetric change of impression surface than storing in the dry air.

The valve timing and intake system in SI engine is chosen in order to get the maximum performance at the target rpm. This is a compromise and the performance reduction is expected in a certain rpm range. Therefore, to accomplish the possible engine capacity all over the operation ranges, it is required to investigate the effects of intake system and valve timing on engines more thoroughly. In this paper, it was attempted to examine closely the combined effects on the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake system dimensions. For this, the inlet port pressure was chosen as a primary parameter to represent engine performance characteristics together with surge tank pressure and induction pressure as secondaries. The inlet port pressure was analyzed in connection with both the secondaries and the performance data. Especially the relation between the inlet port pressure and the torque and volumetric efficiency was investigated on the operating conditions. In this experiment, it was acquired that the performances at specific rpm range could be improved by the combinations of valve timing and intake system. Then it was verified that pressure at a intake system contained useful data for the engine performance. By the analysis of inlet port pressure with the others, it was obtained that the properties of the torque and the volumetric efficiency due to the change of valve timing and intake conditions were able to be defined by the average and the maximum inlet port pressures, the pressure near before the intake valve closing(IVC) point as well as the pressure at IVC point during the intake valve opening duration. These results could be applied to almost all over the experimental conditions.

The subsidence of ground in urban area can be caused by the occurrence of the cavity and the change in ground volumetric water content. The objective of this study is the detection of abnormal area of ground in urban area where the cavity or the change in ground volumetric water content is occurred by the ground penetrating radar signal. GPR survey is carried out on the test bed with a circular buried object. From the GPR survey, the signals filtered by the bandpass filtering are measured, and the methods consisting of gain function, time zero, background removal, deconvolution and display gain are applied to the filtered signals. As a result of application of the signal processing methods, the polarity of signal corresponds with the relation of electrical impedance of the cavity and the ground in test bed. In addition, the relative permittivity calculated by GPR signal is compared with that of predicted by volumetric water content of the test bed. The relative permittivities obtained from two different methods show similar values. Therefore, the abnormal area where the change in ground volumetric water content is occurred can be detected from the results of the GPR survey in case the depth of underground utilities is known. Signal processing methods and estimation of relative permittivity performed in this study may be effectively used to detect the abnormal area of ground in urban area.

Purpose: To investigate the safety of high dose hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) in patients with small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in terms of liver volumetric changes and clinical liver function. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients with small HCC who were treated with high dose hypofractionated RT between 2006 and 2009. The serial changes of the liver volumetric parameter were analyzed from pre-RT and follow-up (FU) computed tomography (CT) scans. We estimated linear time trends of whole liver volume using a linear mixed model. The serial changes of the Child-Pugh (CP) scores were also analyzed in relation to the volumetric changes. Results: Mean pre-RT volume of entire liver was 1,192.2 mL (range, 502.6 to 1,310.2 mL) and mean clinical target volume was 14.7 mL (range, 1.56 to 70.07 mL). Fourteen (87.5%) patients had 4 FU CT sets and 2 (12.5%) patients had 3 FU CT sets. Mean interval between FU CT acquisition was 2.5 months. After considering age, gender and the irradiated liver volume as a fixed effects, the mixed model analysis confirmed that the change in liver volume is not significant throughout the time course of FU periods. Majority of patients had a CP score change less than 2 except in 1 patient who had CP score change more than 3. Conclusion: The high dose hypofractionated RT for small HCC is relatively safe and feasible in terms of liver volumetric changes and clinical liver function.
This study was conducted to understand the deposition characteristics of debris flow and to analyze the reduction effect of debris flow damage by installing a berm. Flume experiments were performed in consideration of various channel slope and volumetric sediment concontration. In order to analyze the reduction effect of debris flow damage by installing a berm, the cases of not installing a berm and the cases of installing a berm were compared. In this study, the runout distance, total travel distance, and mobility ratio were analyzed among the deposition characteristics of debris flow. First, the deposition characteristics of debris flow according to the change of the channel slope were analyzed, and the deposition characteristics of debris flow due to the change of volumetric sediment concentration were analyzed. In addition, the change rate of debris flow deposition characteristics when a berm was installed was calculated based on the case when a berm was not installed. As a result of the experiments, it was confirmed that the channel slope and volumetric sediment concentration had a significant effect on the deposition characteristics of debris flow. In addition, when a berm is installed on the slope, the runout distance and mobility ratio of debris flow are greatly decreased, and the total travel distance is increased. This means that installing a berm delays the movement of debris flow and reduces the potential mobility of debris flow. The results of this study will provide useful information for understanding the deposition characteristics of debris flow. Furthermore, it is expected to help in the design of a berm.

In this study, a computer program has been developed which predicts the variation of the volumetric efficiency with the change of design of the intake system effectively by the analysis of the flow in each part of a multi-cylinder compression ignition engine. For the calculation of the flow in the intake and exhaust systems, the method of characteristics has been used, and the double Wiebe's function has been adopted for the calculation of the heat release rate in the cylinders. The accuracy of presented method has been proved through the comparison between the simulation and experimental results over the various engine speeds and intake pipe lengths.
