  • Beauty is inclusive, which appears everywhere. As classic forms, poetry, calligraphy and painting are a good way to express the beauty of literature and art. In history, literature was almost identical to art. Among them, there is no lack of penetrating judgment about beauty, but which is often forgotten. Since the Qing Dynasty, Yuyang's Notes on Poetry can be said to be one of the representatives. There are many versions, whose common ones are three volumes and two volumes. The three volumes were the first carving copies of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty. The two volumes are the lithographic books in 1909, with the "Preface of Yongzheng and Yu Zhaosheng" as the base. For details, please refer to the text, which needs no further elaboration here. We it includes too many contents, so some parts are chosen as an example to trigger thought about aesthetics. Wang Shizhen was the literati of the Qing Dynasty who had the greatest influence on the Korean Peninsula in terms of poetry. In Yuyang's Notes on Poetry, he also specifically talked about the poetry diplomacy between the Qing Dynasty and the Chosun Dynasty, whose literature value was extremely high. Art contains both beauty and crafts.

  • The normal lung volumes were determined and subdivided under sitting position in 48 middle school girls, 49 high school girls and 44 house wives. All subjects were free of pulmonary and vascular diseases. The vital capacity was measured by Mckessons spirometer and the residual volume was determined by Rahn's three breathing method. 1. The lung volumes (BTPS) of middle school girls determined were: $RV\;0.59{\pm}0.11l\;FRC\;1.45{\pm}2.22l\;VC\;2.68{\pm}0.29l$ 2. The lung volumes (BTPS) of high school girls determined were: $RV\;0.83{\pm}0.19l\;FRC\;1.9{\pm}0.25l\;VC\;3.15{\pm}0.24l$ 3. The lung volumes (BTPS) of house wives determind were: $RV\;0.95{\pm}0.61{\ell}\;FRC\;2.1{\pm}0.25{\ell}\;VC\;3.06{\pm}0.29l$ 4. The calculated residual ratio $(RV/TLC{\times}100)$ were: $17.7{\pm}2.57%$ in middle school girls and $20.6{\pm}3.65%$ in high school girls and $24.0{\pm}2.31%$ in house wives 5. The functional residual ratio $(FRC/TLC{\times}100)$ were: $43.7{\pm}5.98%$ in middle school girls and $48.8{\pm}4.41%4 in high school girls and $52.6{\pm}5.38%$ in house wives. 6. The correlation coefficients between vital capacity and total lung capacity were r=0.96 in middle school girls and r=0.986 in high school girls and r=0.856 in house wives. 7. The regression equations were obtained follows: $TLC(l) =1.105{\times}VC+0.304$ (in middle school girls) $TLC(l) =1.551{\times}VC-0.902$ (in high school girls) $TLC(l) =0.999{\times}VC+0.954$ (in house wives)

  • The Annals of Joseon Dynasty, which recorded governmental affairs for 472 years (AD 1392-1863) during the Joseon dynasty is an representative paper cultural heritage in Korea. Being recognised their authenticity and values they were designated as the No 151 national treasure of Korea in 1973 and registered as 'The Memories of the World' by UNESCO in 1997. Unusually, some volumes of the Annals were treated by beeswax for the permanent preservation. However, the examinations on the deterioration of the beeswax-treated volumes had been exposed the serious damage than the untreated volumes. In particular, the larger amount of beeswax were worst in deterioration condition. In order to solve these problems, NRICH(National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) of Korea launched the investigation study for the conservation of beeswax-treated volumes of the Annals. Now then, the five study areas have been set up; 1) to understand the damaged condition of the Annals; 2) to analyse the raw materials and production techniques; 3) to test the degradation degree using the duplication samples for understanding the aging factors and mechanism; 4) to develop the conservation techniques through dewaxing and thereafter strengthening the base paper of Hanji; 5) to develop the long-term storage technique using inert gases. On the basis of outcomes from this study, NRICH will plan to establish the systematic conservation and management plan for the beeswax-treated volumes of the Annals in future.

  • Walking behaviors are one of the most basic transport modes in daily life. As a result, the efforts and concerns on pedestrians are consistently increased. This study tried to reveal significant factors for pedestrian volumes through structural equation models and compare the impacts of the whole time of day, off-peak time, peak time on the pedestrian volumes. The results of the analysis show that commercial business factors, accessibility factors, walking environment factors are the most significant factors that increase pedestrian volumes. Whereas, housing factors do not contribute to increase the pedestrian volumes. In the non-peak time, the weight of commercial business factors is higher than the whole time of day, while the weight housing factors, accessibility factors, walking environment factors are lower. In the peak time, however, the weight of commercial business factors decreases rather than the whole time of day, while the weight of the other factors increase.

  • This study analyzes the bibliographical characteristics of relics settled from the inside of Buddhist triad - Buddha, Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra - which is located in the main building of Boseong Temple. This Buddhist triad was made in Gyonam Temple in Geo Chang, Gyongsang-do before 1647 and transferred to Boseong Temple. It is revealed that this Buddhist triad has 13 kinds, 73 volumes altogether including 37 volumes from Buddha and 18 volumes from Bodhisattva and Samantabhadra each. Of these books, three kinds are founded for the first time. Also, by analyzing the features of these sacred books, it is confirmed that most of the books, 6 kinds 65 volumes, are the Sutras. Especially, this study focuses on the fact that there are 5 kinds, 46 volumes in these Sutras which were published by Korea itself. Analysis shows that these publications were revised mostly in Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do before the Buddhist triad was made.

  • Background: Coronary angioplasty has been replacing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) because of the relative advantage in terms of recovery time and noninvasiveness of the procedure. Compared to other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, Korea has experienced a rapid increase in coronary angioplasty volumes. Methods: We analyzed changes in procedure volumes of CABG and of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from three sources: the OECD Health Data, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) surgery statistics, and the National Health Insurance claims data. Results: We found the ratio of procedure volume of PCI to that of CABG per 100,000 population was 19.12 in 2014, which was more than triple the OECD average of 5.92 for the same year. According to data from NHIS statistics, this ratio was an increase from 11.4 to 19.3 between 2006 and 2013. Conclusion: We found that Korea has a higher ratio of total procedure volumes of PCI with respect to CABG and also a more rapid increase of volumes of PCI than other countries. Prospective studies are required to determine whether this increase in absolute volumes of PCI is a natural response to a real medical need or representative of medical overuse.

  • Background: Sympathetic blocks with local anesthetics are used to differentiate sympathetically- maintained pain (SMP) from sympathetically-independent pain (SIP). However, systemic lidocaine is also used in the management of neuropathic pain. Therefore, there may be possibility of a false positive response in relieving their pain by systemic absorption of lidocaine following a diagnostic sympathetic block in patients with SIP. In this study, we measured the plasma lidocaine concentrations after a stellate ganglion block (SGB) using three volumes of 1% lidocaine. Methods: This prospective, crossover study was performed in 3 patients who experience sudden hearing loss and in 4 volunteers. Each person received SGB three times using three different volumes (6 ml, 12 ml and 16 ml) of 1% lidocaine at one week intervals. SGB was performed using a 23 G butterfly needle via a paratracheal approach by two persons. Two ml of venous blood was obtained from a prepared contra-lateral sided venous route at 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 20 and 60 min after SGB. Plasma lidocaine level was analyzed by immunoassay. Results: Mean plasma lidocaine concentrations correlated well with the volumes of 1% lidocaine used in SGB; larger volumes showed higher concentrations (P < 0.01). Mean peak plasma concentrations were $1.08{\pm}0.18$ in 6 ml, $1.90{\pm}0.47$ in the 12 ml and $2.74{\pm}0.67{\mu}g/ml$ in the 16 ml groups (P < 0.01). The mean time to reach peak plasma concentration was not significantly different between the three groups. Conclusions: The peak plasma lidocaine concentrations in SGB using large volume were found to be similar to that of IV lidocaine infusion in the management of neuropathic pain. These data suggest that diagnostic sympathetic block may result in many false positive responses for SMP. Part of its effect may be related to systemic local anesthetic absorption and not to a sympathetic block. Therefore, physicians may be required to use optimal volumes and minimal concentration of local anesthetic in diagnostic sympathetic block procedures and also make a careful assessment of the performance of a permanent sympathetic block.

  • The paper analyzes factors to affect pedestrian volumes by land-use type using 2012 Seoul Pedestrian Survey. First of all, five groups were classified based on land-use types around survey points such as residential, commercial, industrial and green uses, using k-average cluster analysis. Then, differences in average pedestrian volumes by group were compared for a day and time of day. In addition, multiple regression analysis was employed to identify factors to affect pedestrian volumes, considering physical features, land use types, public transportation accessibility, and socio-economic indices as independent variables by spatial hierarchy. Model results show that the walkway width positively influenced on pedestrian volumes for all groups, whereas other variables differently affected by group. Our results can be used as basic data for establishing polices with respect to pedestrian road design and improvement as well as estimating pedestrian demand by land-use type.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to analyze the service life of expressway pavement based on both traffic volumes and use of deicing chemicals. METHODS : A database was built using expressway rehabilitation history information from over the last decade. In order to estimate the service life of expressway pavement, various analysis methods were considered, and a decision was made to perform analysis using a method based on an accumulated rehabilitation ratio. The service life of expressway pavement was then analyzed by classifying the scale of traffic volume and extent of de-icing chemicals used. RESULTS : The service life of PMA and SMA ranged from 7.8 to 10.6 years and from 9.9 to 12.0 years, respectively. The service life of JCP ranged from 16.0 to 22.2 years, and the service life of CRCP was 33.5 years on average. Results of assessing service life according to traffic volumes and de-icing chemicals showed that the lower the traffic volumes were, the greater the service life of PMA and JCP, and the less that de-icing chemicals were applied, the greater the service life of JCP. CONCLUSIONS : The dependence of expressway pavement service life on traffic volumes and de-icing chemicals makes it possible to apply LCCA for regional maintenance plans and cost-effective selection of expressway pavement type.

  • OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to measure the minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of the pharynx in snoring patients and normal subjects and to see if there is an increase in the minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of the pharynx with advancement of the mandible. METHODS: The pharyngeal computed tomography and 3-dimensional reconstruction were used to measure the cross-sectional areas and volumes of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx with the jaw in normal position and in protrusive position in 7 patients with snoring and 7 control subjects while they were awake. RESULTS: The oropharynx was revealed to have the most narrow site in the pharynx and there was a tendency for the snorers to have a smaller nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal cross-sectional area than normal subjects but not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in the volumes of the nasopharynx and oropharynx between the two groups. With advancement of the jaw the minimal cross-sectional area of oropharynx was significantly increased, and the volume was also increased but not significantly. The minimal cross-sectional areas and volumes of nasopharynx as well as hypopharynx were not significantly influenced by the advancement of the mandible. CONCLUSIONS: There was a tendency for snorers to have a smaller oropharynx than normal subjects and the oropharyngeal lumen was increased with the advancement of the mandible in both snorers and normal subjects.
