  • With the increase in the annealing temperature, the volume fraction of austenite phase increased and the volume fraction of ferrite phase decreased. In compliance with the addition of N, not only the volume fraction of austenite phase was increased but also the austenite structure was made larger. Volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase was increased by decreasing of the volume fraction of ferrite phase, with the increase in the aging time and in compliance with the addition of N. As increasing in volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase, tensile strength and hardness increased, while elongation and impact value decreased. Elongation slowly decreased and impact value rapidly decreased at the early stage of aging. By the added N, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and impact value was increased.

  • Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

  • Improvements are made to existing primitive cell volume measurement method to provide a real-time analysis capability for the phase analysis of nanocrystalline materials. Simplification is introduced in the primitive cell volume calculation leading to fast and reliable method for nano-phase identification and is applied to the phase analysis of Mo-Si-N nanocoating layer. In addition, comparison is made between real-time and film measurements for their accuracy of calculated primitive cell volume values and factors governing the accuracy of the method are determined. About 5% accuracy in primitive cell determination is obtained from camera length calibration and this technique is used to investigate the cell volume variation in WC-TiC core-shell microstructure. In addition to chemical compositional variation in core-shell type structure, primitive cell volume variation reveals additional information on lattice coherency strain across the interface.

  • The volume phase transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium methacrylate) (P (NIPAAm-co-SMA)) hydrogels crosslinked with poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was investigated in consideration of water content and surface area. The volume phase transition temperature of hydrogel was not affected by the concentration of crosslinking agent, which increased over 40$\^{C}$ by incorporating a small amount of SMA. Higher volume phase transition temperature was obtained when PEGAD was used as a crosslinking agent, suggesting that the chain length of crosslinking agent had a significant effect on the volume phase transition temperature. The surface area of PNIPAAm and P (NIPAAm-co-SMA) gels fell off around the volume phase transition temperature, resulting from the fact that the size of pores reduced remarkably in the course of the volume phase transition. Hence, the surface area and the pore size were considered to be important factors indicating the volume phase transition.

  • We carried out numerical studies to investigate the single- and two-phase flow characteristics in the single- and multi-channels. We used the finite volume method to solve the mass and momentum conservation equations. The volume of fluid model is used to predict the two-phase flow in the channel. We obtained the distribution of velocity fields, pressure drop and air volume fraction for different water mass flow rates. We also calculated the distribution of mass flow rates in the multi-channels to understand how the flow is distributed in the channels. The calculated results for the single- and two-phase flow are partly compared with the present experimental data both qualitatively and quantitatively, showing relatively good agreement between them. The numerical scheme used in this study predicts well the characteristics of single-and two-phase flow in a multi-channel.

  • General time-volume averaged conservation equations and jump conditions for two-phase flows are derived here. The time-averaged equations for a single phase region in two-phase flow are obtained from local instant balance equations by a technique often used for single phase turbulent flow equations. The results obtained by integrating the time averaged equations over a flow volume are spatially averaged twice; first, they are averaged over a single phase region of the k-th phase and then averaged over the total volume of the k-th phase, in a flow volume. The mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations are obtained from the general time-volume averaged equations. The advantages of the present model are explained by comparing it with Ishii's model (1) and Banerjee's model (2). Finally, the assumptions and approximate terms of the equations of the THERMIT-6S are clarified.

  • Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.

  • The effective longitudinal shear modulus(LSM) of continuous composites is studied theoretically and numerically using 3-phase unit cell model. Circular, hexagonal and rectangular shapes of reinforced fiber are considered to predict the shear modulus as a function of elastic modulus of each phase and volume fraction of interphase and reinforced fiber. It is found that rectangular fiber shape in low fiber volume fraction($v_f$<30%) and circular fiber shape in high volume fraction($v_f$>40%) shows the higher longitudinal shear modulus. Also the obtained values of LSM for rectangular array and by numerical analysis are higher than those of hexagonal array and by theoretical analysis respectively. The reinforcing effects of interphase are more significant in cases of higher fiber volume fraction and circular fiber shape. Not only the spatial distribution and shape of reinforcing fiber but also the volume of interphase have a pronounced effects on the overall LSM. It is also found that the tangent moduous of 2-and 3-phase polymer matrix composites is insensitive to the shape and distribution of reinforcing fibers.

  • In this paper, we present a method to automatically quantify the three-dimensional (3D) volume of red blood cells (RBCs) using off-axis digital holographic microscopy. The RBCs digital holograms are recorded via a CCD camera using an off-axis interferometry setup. The RBCs' phase image is reconstructed from the recorded off-axis digital hologram by a computational reconstruction algorithm. The watershed segmentation algorithm is applied to the reconstructed phase image to remove background parts and obtain clear targets in the phase image with many single RBCs. After segmenting the reconstructed RBCs' phase image, all single RBCs are extracted, and the 3D volume of each single RBC is then measured with the surface area and the phase values of the corresponding RBC. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method to automatically calculate the 3D volume of RBC, two typical shapes of RBCs, i.e., stomatocyte/discocyte, are tested via experiments. Statistical distributions of 3D volume for each class of RBC are generated by using our algorithm. Statistical hypothesis testing is conducted to investigate the difference between the statistical distributions for the two typical shapes of RBCs. Our experimental results illustrate that our study opens the possibility of automated quantitative analysis of 3D volume in various types of RBCs.

  • For rheology investigation of lubricating oils, first phase diagrams were made from determined free volume based on density measurements and the temperature-pressure relation was estimated using the expansion coefficient of free volume and the temperature-pressure relation of the viscoelastic transition point. Next, the authors proposed the density-pressure-temperature relation and the viscosity-pressure-temperature relation of the tested oils based on the free volume and the phase diagrams. Moreover, it was shown that the Ehrenfest equation or the gradient of the phase diagram is closely related to the expansion coefficient of free volume.
