This paper presents an active use of doubly-fed induction-generator(DFIG)-based variable-speed wind-turbine for voltage control in power system operation. For reasonable simulation studies, a detail dynamic model of a DFIG-based wind-turbine grid-connected system is presented. For the research objective, an innovative reactive power control scheme is proposed that manipulates dynamically the reactive power from the voltage source converter(VSC) with taking into account its operating state and limits.
This paper develops a coordinated control strategy of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) system based on repetitive control (RC) under generalized harmonic grid voltage conditions. The proposed RC strategy in the rotor side converter (RSC) is capable of ensuring smooth DFIG electromagnetic torque that will enable the possible safe functioning of the mechanical components, such as gear box and bearing. Moreover, the proposed RC strategy in the grid side converter (GSC) aims to achieve sinusoidal overall currents of the DFIG system injected into the network to guarantee satisfactory power quality. The dc-link voltage fluctuation under the proposed control target is theoretically analyzed. Influence of limited converter capacity on the controllable area has also been studied. A laboratory test platform has been constructed, and the experimental results validate the availability of the proposed RC strategy for the DFIG system under generalized harmonic grid voltage conditions.

This study proposes a grid voltage estimation scheme without a phase delay in the voltage-sensorless control of a grid-connected inverter to enhance its economic feasibility, such as manufacturing cost and system complexity. The proposed scheme estimates grid voltages using a disturbance observer (DOB)-based current controller to control the grid-connected inverter without grid-side voltage sensors. The proposed voltage-sensorless control scheme can be applied successfully to grid-connected inverters, which should be operated with synchronization to the grid, considering the phase angle of the grid can be effectively detected through estimating the grid voltages by DOB. However, a problem associated with the phase delay in estimated grid voltages remains because the DOB has dynamic behavior similar to low-pass filter. Hence, the estimated grid voltages are compensated by a phase lead compensator to overcome the limitation. The effectiveness of the proposed control and estimation schemes is proven through simulations and experiments using a 2 kVA prototype inverter.

One of the major reasons for recent blackout, like August 14, 2003 blackout in the US and Canada has been insufficient voltage/reactive power support. For the stable reactive power management, a new approach for the voltage monitoring and control structure is required in the market environment. This paper proposes the effective localized-voltage control scheme using the information from pilot buses at each zone. In this paper, the steady state voltage monitoring and control (SSVMC) is adopted and illustrated for the voltage control scheme during steady state because it is thought as the systemic algorithm to explain voltage profile phenomenon before and after contingencies. And the concept of electrical distance is applied to simultaneously achieve both clustering the voltage control zone, and selecting the pilot bus as the representative node at each control zone. Applying SSVMC based on the structure with clustering and pilot bus enables system operators to monitor and understand the system condition much more easily, to monitor and control the voltage in real-time more manageably, and to respond quickly to a disturbance. The proposed voltage control scheme has been tested on the IEEE 14-bus system with the numerical analysis to examine the system reliability and structure efficiency.
This paper proposes a comparison of Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) and Direct Power Control (DPC) under command mode transition for PMSG Wind Turbines (WT). Based on a neutral point clamped three level back to back type Voltage Source Converter (VSC), proposed control scheme automatically control the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. Automatic command mode transition based on the dc-link voltage error provides a command mode changing between grid command and MPPT mode. It is confirmed through PLECS simulations in Matlab. Simulation result shows that proposed control scheme of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control scheme of MPPT with optimal torque control and VOC under a step response. The proposed control scheme makes it possible to provide a good dynamic performance for PMSG wind turbines in order to generate a high quality output power.
This paper presents a discrete-time version of voltage and current limited operation using an enhanced direct torque and flux control method for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. A command voltage vector for airgap torque and stator flux regulation can be uniquely determined by the finite-settling-step direct torque and flux control (FSS-DTFC) algorithm under physical constraints. The proposed command voltage vector trajectories can be developed to achieve the maximum inverter voltage utilization for the discrete-time current limit (DTCL)-based FSS-DTFC. The algorithm can produce adequate results over a number of the potential secondary upsets found in the steady-state current limit (SSCL)-based DTFC. The fast changes in the torque and stator flux linkage improve the dynamic responses significantly over a wide constant-power operating region. The control strategy was evaluated on a 900W IPMSM in both simulations and experiments.
This paper presents a novel close-loop control scheme based on small signal modeling and weighted composite voltage feedback for a three-phase input and single-phase output Matrix Converter (3-1MC). A small non-polar capacitor is employed as the decoupling unit. The composite voltage weighted by the load voltage and the decoupling unit voltage is used as the feedback value for the voltage controller. Together with the current loop, the dual-loop control is implemented in the 3-1MC. In this paper, the weighted composite voltage expression is derived based on the sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) strategy. The switch functions of the 3-1MC are deduced, and the average signal model and small signal model are built. Furthermore, the stability and dynamic performance of the 3-1MC are studied, and simulation and experiment studies are executed. The results show that the control method is effective and feasible. They also show that the design is reasonable and that the operating performance of the 3-1MC is good.

At present, one of two LCC-HVDC systems is responsible for controlling the grid frequency of the Jeju Island Power System (JIPS). The grid voltage is regulated by using STATCOMs. However, these two objectives can be achieved in one device that is called by a modular multilevel converter-high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Therefore, this paper proposes frequency and voltage control strategies for the JIPS based on a MMC-HVDC system. In this case, the ancillary frequency and voltage controllers are implemented into the MMC-HVDC system. The modelling of the JIPS is done based on the parameters and measured data from the real JIPS. The simulation results obtained from the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program are confirmed by comparing them to measured data from the real JIPS. Then, the effect of the MMC-HVDC system on the JIPS will be tested in many cases of operation when the JIPS operates with and without STATCOMs. The objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
Z-source inverters (ZSI) are used to realize both DC voltage boost and DC-AC inversion in single stage with a reduced number of power switching devices. A traditional MPPT control algorithm provides a shoot-through interval which should be inserted in the switching waveforms of the inverter to output the maximum power to the Z-network. At this instant, the voltage across the Z-source capacitor is equal to the output voltage of a PV array at the maximum power point (MPP). The control of the Z-source capacitor voltage beyond the MPP voltage of a PV array is not facilitated in traditional MPPT algorithms. This paper presents a unified MPPT control algorithm to simultaneously achieve MPPT as well as Z-source capacitor voltage control. Development and implementation of the proposed algorithm and a comparison with traditional results are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed unified MPPT control strategy is implemented in Matlab/Simulink software and verified by experimental results.
