  • To find out the optimum nitrogen fertilization levels for the leafy vegetables in volcanic ash soils of Cheju island, fertilization effects on chinese cabbage chinese and cabbage were investigated through pot and field experiments. In pot experiment conducted with two volcanic ash soils of Cheju island, optimum rates of nitrogen fertilizer was ranged from 294 to $331kg\;ha^{-1}$ for chinese cabbage. At field experiment with one volcanic soil, the optimum N fertilizer was $331kg\;ha^{-1}$. On the basis of soil organic matters, fertilizer recommendation formula for cabbage, could be established by using 1.03 of comparison factors (F) compared with chinese cabbage : y=344.54-0.285x for chines cabbage, y= 354.88-0.294x for cabbage, where y is the recommendation amount of nitrogen fertilizer with x g $kg^{-1}$ of organic matter in soil. Actual optimum rate of nitrogen fertilizer for chinese cabbage under field condition was much more similar to the value caluculated by the revised nitrogen recommendation formula than the amount of nitrogen fertilizer recommended by the current formula in volcanic ash soil.

  • With respect to the tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island, a comparative study was conducted using the existing research results and the test results performed in this study. In addition, the characteristics and effectiveness of the cohesion and internal friction angle estimated from the Brazilian tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength of Jeju volcanic rocks were investigated. As results, the Brazilian tensile strength of Jeju volcanic rocks was closely related to absorption, and decreased exponentially as the absorption increased. It was confirmed that the internal friction angle was closely related to the ratio of unconfined compressive strength to Brazilian tensile strength (σc / σt), and increased logarithmically as the ratio of σc / σt increased. In addition, the ratios of σc / σt of Jeju volcanic rocks were in the range of 5~20 depending on the magnitude of internal friction angle. In the case of cohesion, it was closely related to the absorption and Brazilian tensile strength. The cohesion exponentially decreased as the absorption increased, such as the relation between the Brazilian tensile strength and absorption. It was confirmed that there was a linear relation between the cohesion and Brazilian tensile strength.

  • The Nishinoshima volcano, located 940 km south of Tokyo, experienced an eruption from June to August 2020. The volcanic gas and ash from the eruption of Nishinoshima that occurred at the end of July 2020 was reported to have the potential to affect the Korean Peninsula. In this study, we used Ash3D, a numerical simulation program for volcanic ash dispersion, to investigate the eruption that occurred at 0:00 local time on July 28, 2020, with a volcanic explosivity index of three. The results showed that the volcanic ash cloud reached Okinawa on the morning of July 30, carried by an east wind. It then moved northward and reached Jeju Island on August 1, eventually circulating in a clockwise direction and reaching southern part of the Korean Peninsula on August 2. The concentration of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10), measured at the Jeju Gosan Meteorological Observatory in Jeju Island, increase from August 1. A similar increase in PM10 concentration was observed at the Gudeok Mountain Weather Station in Busan from August 2. These findings suggested that eruption of the Nishinoshima volcano had an impact on the fine dust concentrations at Jeju Island and southern part of the Korean Peninsula.

  • Soil in Jeju Island is largely classified into dark brown non-volcanic ash soil weathered by basalt, dark brown ash soil and black volcanic ash soil origin from volcanic ash. Non-volcanic ash soil is similar to main land soil which can cultivate rice and barely, however, volcanic ash soil is very sterile therefore even barely cultivation is impossible. Although dolmen distribution, ancestral rites, folk songs and agricultural methods can be clearly classed into regional characteristics, it is hard to adduce humanistic sociological basis. However, regional characteristics can be classified by using soil physic-chemical properties of non-volcanic ash soil and volcanic ash soil. Non-volcanic ash soil region relatively has cheerful folk song, dolmen is found and bunjitgeori ancestral rites are common. One the other hand, there are no dolmen are found in volcanic ash soil area. Sad shamanistic song such as Jinsadetsori is common and firstborn-son takes the lead in ancestral rites in this area. This lesson interprets socio-cultural difference using soil environment.

  • The adsorption and leaching of organophosphorus pesticides (phenthoate, diazinon, methidathion) were investigated in Namwon soli(black volcanic soil), Aewol soil(very dark brown volcanic soil) and Mureung soil(dark brown nonvolcanic soil) sampled in Cheju Island. The Freundlich constant, K value, was 52.4, 31.3 and 27.7 for phenthoate, diazinon and methidathion in Namwonsoil, respectively and decreased in the order of phenthoate, diazinon and methidathion among the pesticides. The K value of phenthoate was 52.4, 15.9 and 5.9 for Namwon, Aewol and Mureung soil, respectively and was the highest for Namwon soil with very high organic matter content and cation exchange capacity(CEC). The Freundlich constant, 1/n, showed a high correlation with organic matter content, i.e., its value was less than unity for organic matter rich soil(Namwon soil) and greater than unity for organic matter poor soil(Mureung soil). Total recoveries of pesticides in soil and leachate with leaching in soil column, were in the range of about 74~86%. The leaching of pesticides was less for phenthate with high K values, and more for methidathion with low K values among the pesticides. It was slower for Namwon soil with high K values, and more for methidathion with low K values among the pesticides. It was slower for Namwon soil with high K values, and faster for Mureung soil with low K values among the soils.

  • Hydrogeologic properties of a well field around middle mountainous areas in Pyosun, Jeju volcanic island were examined based on water level monitoring, geologic logging and pumping test data. Due to the alternating basaltic layers with varying permeability in the subsurface, it is difficult to analyze the hydraulic responses to artificial pumping and/or natural precipitation. The least permeable layer, detrital materials with clay, is found at a depth of 200 m below surface, but it is not an upper confining bed for lower main aquifer. Nevertheless, this layer may serve as a natural barrier to vertical percolation and to contaminant migration. Water levels of the production wells are dominantly affected by pumping frequently, while those of the remote observation wells are controlled by ambient precipitation. Results of pumping tests revealed a possible existence of horizontal anisotropy of transmissivity. However, some results of this study include inherent limitations enforced by field conditions such as the consistent of groundwater production and the set of time periods for the cessation of the pumping prior to pumping tests.

  • Hydrated halloysite was formed by the low temperature alteration of trachytic tuff in onion-like spherical or curly platy forms. The Si content was higher than that of ideal kaolin minerals, indicating the possible presence of amorphous materials. The high Fe content is responsible for the platy morphology of halloysite. The leached ions precipitated as halloysite filling the interparticle pores, while trachytic glass was replaced by Si-rich amorphous materials in an hemispherical form, which was further evolved into spherical halloysite. Halloysite is one of the major alteration products of the volcanic ash in Ulleung Island underwent intense trachytic volcanism.
