Volcanic rocks in Jeju Island have vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. In addition, the bedrock of Jeju Island shows stratified structure, that is, soft layers composed of pyroclastic rocks or cavities are irregularly developed between the basalt layers by several times of volcanic activity. In this study, various physical tests and unconfined compressive strength test were conducted for intact rocks sampled in northwestern onshore and offshore of Jeju Island. The results obtained in the tests were compared with the physical and mechanical characteristics of intact rocks sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. As a results, it was confirmed that the physical and mechanical characteristics of basalts sampled in northwestern Jeju Island were similar to those of basalts sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. In addition, it was possible to estimate approximate design parameters from the correlation of mechanical properties with physical properties of basalts in Jeju Island.
In order to Investigate the adsorption characteristics of organochlorine pesticides chlorothaloul and dicofol with soul colors and re참tons far souls of an orange orchard, the souls were sampled at 3 re삼tons, respectively. among black volcanic, dark brown volcanic, and broom nonvolcanlc sorts. Every so6 has a higher clay proportion (49-75%) In sol tcuture and the organic carbon content and cation ekchange capacity with soil decreased in the following sequence: Black volcanic > Dark brown volcanic > Brown nonvolcanic sorts. Especially those In black volcauc trolls were much higher than others. The retention time, quantitative detection limit, and extractian , efficiencies of chlorothalonil and dicofol were 2.82min, 1.5ng/mL, 93.6% and 3.64min, 4.5ng/mL. 94 2%, repectlvely. The Freundlich constant, Kd, was higher in dicofol compared to chlorothalonil and In the black volcanic souls that have higher organic carbon content and cation Bkchange capacity. The Freundlich constant, 1 In, was In the range of 0.76-0.89 In the black volcanic sorts that have a higher organic matter(16.4-19.8%), whereas It was In the range of 1.02-1.13 In the brown nonvolcanic souls that have a lower organic matter(2.4-3.4%), and so It was considered that 1 In was dependent on the organic matter.

The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.
Geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions and K-Ar ages are analyzed in volcanic rocks from Weno Island, Caroline Islands. Seven Weno lava samples of alkali basalt and basaltic trachyandesite are aphyric or sparsely phyric comprising olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Whole-rock geochemical variation of Weno lavas reflects main fractional crystallization of olivine and Cr-spinel phenocrysts. Newly determined K-Ar ages of Weno lavas range from 6.7 to 11.3 Ma (late Miocene), indicating their formation during primary volcanic stage of Chuuk Islands. Trace element compositions of Weno lavas are very similar to those of typical ocean island basalts (OIBs), suggesting their formation during intra-plate mantle plume activity. The plume composition is isotopically very similar to that of Hawaiian hot spot. However, the age span of Chuuk volcanism is longer than that of the other individual volcanoes in the Pacific.
On Aogashima Island, a volcanic island located in the southernmost part of the Izu Seven Islands Chain, vector magnetic anomalies were obtained in a helicopter-borne magnetic survey. The purpose of this study was to understand the volcanic structure of Aogashima Island in order to mitigate future disasters. Commonly, to obtain the magnetic structure of a volcanic island, total intensity anomalies (TIA) have been used, even though they have intrinsic errors that have not been evaluated correctly. Because the total intensity magnetic anomaly (TIA) is not a physical value, it does not satisfy Maxwell's Equations, Laplace's Equation, etc., and so TIA is not suitable for any physical analyses. In addition, it has been conventionally assumed that TIA is the same as the projected total intensity anomaly vector (PTA) for analyses of TIA. However, the effect of the intrinsic error ($\varepsilon_T$ = TIA.PTA) on the analysis results has not been taken into account. To avoid such an effect, vector magnetic anomalies were measured so that a reliable analysis of Aogashima Island magnetization could be carried out. In this study, we evaluated the error in TIA and used vector anomalies to avoid this erroneous effect, in the process obtaining reliable analysis results for 3D, vector magnetization distributions. An area of less than 1 A/m magnetization was found in the south-west part of Aogashima Island at the depth of 1.2 km. Taking the location of fumarolic activity into consideration, the lower-magnetization area was expected to be the source of that fumarolic activity of Aogashima Island.
Paleomagnetic and geological studies of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Jeju Island have been carried out to determine the position of virtual geomagnetic pole(VGP), and to estimate the geological sequence and their age. As a result of paleomagnetic studies, the reversal polarities are measured in the Sanbangsan trachyte and Hwasun formation, and the normal are the rest. In case of normal polarity, the mean values of declination and inclination are $2.3^{\circ}$ and $48.4^{\circ}$, respectively, and the average value of VGP is $85.4^{\circ}N$ and $79.9^{\circ}W$. The locations of VGP's are coincident with those obtained from world-wide Plio-Pleistocene rocks. The Hwasun formation and Seongsan formation which have been known to be sedimented in the similar time in the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption, possess reversal and normal polarities, respectively. This fact brings about the result that two formations should be separated in a sense of geological sequence. Consequently, the geological sequence of the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption is Pyoseonri basalt-Seoguipo hawaiite-Hwasun formation-Seongsan formation-Jungmun hawaiite-Sanbangsan trachyte. Referring to the paleomagnetic studies and the previous and present geological studies, Seoguipo formation corresponds to the Gauss normal epoch, the 2nd-stage of volcanic eruption to Matuyama reversed epoch, and the 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-stages to Brunhes normal epoch. Therefore, the Seoguipo formation is mostly sedimented during late Pliocene and/or presumably extended to the early Pleistocene. The rocks of the 2nd- to 5th-stage are formed later than this.
Volcanic Ash Soils are widely distributed in Jeju island, and constitute the important upland soils which are either presently being cultivated or are suitable for reclaiming. The characteristics of Volcanic Ash Soils according to data made available by previous studies in Jeju and the outside of the country are as following: The most conspicuous mineralogical property is the presence of amorphous mineral colloids. The colloids have large and highly reactive surface to which the common physical and chemical properties are related. Soils are low in bulk density and higher both in porosity and permeability. Accumulation of humus in the upper part of soil is found in great quantity. Cation exchange capacity is high mainly due to high humus content, but the absorbing intensity of ammonium and potassium is weaker than that of crystalline clays. The phosphate absorption coefficient is extremely high and deficiency of minor element may occur both crops and animals. Soils are densely populated with actinomycetes and anaerobic bacteria. Nitrification and activity of urease are distinctly stronger than that of non-Volcanic Ash Soils.
Jeju Island is formed by lava flow streams with the Mt. Halla in the center. The Mt. Halla‘s crater or other parasitic volcano produced lava flows creating lava plateau in this area. There are one thousand volcano caves in the world, and 50% of them are located in the west coast of United States. There are 186 volcano caves in Italy, 100 in Mt. Fuji, Japan, and 70 in Jeju Island. Jeju Island‘s east-west axis four sides are world-renown volcano zones with basalt strata that feature low viscosity and fluidity.
A laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the number of soil microorganisms, identification and enumeration of soil microbial species on the mineral and volcanic ash soil with different cropping system of the Jeju Island. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The number of bacteria was high in mineral soil with rotation of upland crops than that of volcanic ash soil with continuous cropping system. 2. According to identification of soil bacteria, the most of bacteria were composed to short rod with Gram negative. Among the bacteria species, Rhizobium spp. and Flavobacterium spp. were most high population in both of mineral and volcanic ash soil. 3. The number of fungi in mineral soils were reduced by the rotated cultivation of upland crops but no significant differences were observed in volcanic ash soil with continuous cropping system. On the other hand, Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., and Penicillium spp. were most high population in both of mineral and volcanic ash soil. 4. Comparing of the number and species ot microorganism to the cash crops soil in main land, about 10 to 100 times for bacteria and more than two times for the number and species of fungi were lowered in Jeju Island soil.
