Volcanic landforms are classified into the volcanic edifice produced through constructive processes of eruption and the crater generated by destructive processes of eruption. Both landforms are distributed around Korean Peninsula including attaching islands. However, only a few regions such as Mt. Baekdu, Jeju Island, Ulleung Island, and Chugaryeong, which are closely related with the volcanic eruption occurred during the Quaternary, could be considered as a volcanic landform. It results in categorizing the volcanic landform as an unusual topography in Korea. The study of Korean researchers on the volcanic landform were regularized in 1970s on Jeju Island, in 1980s on Ulleung Island, and in 1990s on Mt. Baekdu, respectively. Oreums and lava tubes in Jeju Island have been also examined since 1980s. Compared with other fields of geomorphology, researches as well as researchers on the volcanic landform are very few in Korea. Geomorphologists are expected to perform an active research in that the volcanic landform of Korea have diverse values.
Volcanic rocks in Jeju island show vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. Previous studies on the volcanic rocks in Jeju island have been actively conducted on geological and chemical properties in terms of geophysics and geology and on physical and mechanical properties in terms of engineering. But comprehensive comparative analysis on physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island is not conducted. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island were compared and analyzed comprehensively through the existing research papers and reports about volcanic rocks in Jeju island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity is commonly linear and could be represented as two different linear approximations. In addition, it was found that the relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity and the relationship between absorption (porosity) and uniaxial compressive strength could be classified more clearly, considering two different linear relationships in absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity.
Eruptive volumes of three monogenetic volcanoes (Songaksan tuff ring, Biyangdo scoria cone, and Ilchulbong tuff cone) with the youngest eruption age are calculated using the model, applied to Auckland Volcanic Field in New Zealand, to investigate the volcanic eruption scale and to evaluate volcanic hazard of Jeju Island. Calculated eruptive volumes of the volcanoes are $24,987,557m^3$, $9,652,025m^3$, and $11,911,534m^3$, respectively, and the volumes include crater infill, tuff ring (tuff cone), scoria cone, and lava flow. Volcanic explosivity indices of Songaksan tuff ring, Biyangdo scoria cone, and Ilchulbong tuff cone are estimated based on the eruptive volumes to be 3, 2, and 3 respectively, and eruption type is Strombolian to Surtseyan. It is assumed that the amount of emitted sulfur dioxide gas is $2-8{\times}10^3kt/y$ according to the correlation between volcanic explosivity index and volcanic sulfur dioxide index. Recent age dating researches reveal evidences of several volcanic activities during the last 10,000 years indicating the possible volcanic eruption in Jeju Island in the near future. Therefore, it is necessary for appropriate researches regarding volcanic eruption of the island to be accomplished. In addition, establishment of the evaluation and preparation system for volcanic hazard based on the researches is required.
This study reports the results about the petrography of volcanic rocks in Namoo island and Namhyeongje island, off the southern coast of Busan City. The rocks in the Namhyeongje island composed of dacitic crystal-vitric welded tuff, showing phenocrysts of plagioclase, rock fragment with flow structure of elongated and flattened pumice fragments. In thin section it shows pyroclastic texture. The volcanic rocks in Namoo island are mainly dark grey-bluish dacite with phenocrysts of plagioclase and gradually changed to pink-greyish rhyodacite with auto-brecciated. In the northeastern part of the island, the volcanic rocks occurred as aggromerate with a poorly sorted mixture of blocks, lappili and ash and felsic feeder dike intrude the aggromerate. Major element composition of the volcanic rocks in Namhyeongje island and Namoo island are $SiO_2$ 73.6~74.4 wt.% and 65.5~68.3 wt.%, respectively. The volcanic rocks in these island are felsic volcanic rocks.
One hundred of thirty volcanic rocks col1ected from the Jeju island, Jeongog, Guryongpo and other areas were analyzed for major elements and trace elements with Au by inductively coupled argon plasma and graphite furnace atomic absorptiom spectrometry. The Au content is the highest values (0.2~43.4 ppb, average; 10.34 ppb) from the Jeju island volcanic rocks and the lowest (0.5~11.0 ppb, average; 1.23 ppb) from the Guryongpo volcanic area. The content of Au tends to be higher in the Quarternary volcanic rocks than Tertiary or Cretaceous volcanic rocks. The Au content of the calc alkali volcanic rocks tends to increase from mafic to felsic volcanic rocks, but that of the alkalic volcanic rocks tends to increase from felsic to mafic volcanic rocks. The Au content of the volcanic rocks collected from the Jeju island shows the highest values in the feldspar olivine basalts. Elements or oxides which have positive or negative correlations with Au are Ag, Mo, Rb, V, Y, $K_2O$, MgO and $SiO_2$, but other elements analyzed are not shown correlations with Au. It has a tendency to show that samples from the Jeju with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the non-Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the Dupal area, while those from the Jeongog with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the non-Dupal area, in the Ba/Nb-La/Nb, Zr/Nb-Ba/Nb diagrams. It shows that samples from the Jeju and Guryongpo with high gold content are plotted in the within-plate, while those with low gold content are plotted in the arc-related area, and those from the Jeongog are scattered in the $TiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $Zr/A1_2O_3-TiO_2/Al_2O_3$ diagrams.
We estimate the eruption history and magmatic eruptive volumes of each rock units to evaluate the volcanic eruption scale and volcanic hazard of the Ulleung Island. Especially, Maljandeung Tuff represents about 19~5.6 ka B.P. from $^{14}C$ dating, and Albong Trachyandesite, about 0.005 Ma from K-Ar dating in recent age dating data. These ages reveal evidences of volcanic activities within the last 10,000 years, indicating that the Ulleung Island can classify as an active volcano with possibility of volcanic eruption near future. Accumulated DRE-corrected eruptive volume is calculated at $40.80km^3$, within only the island. The calculated volumes of each units are $3.71km^3$ in Sataegam Tuff, and $0.10km^3$ in Maljandeung Tuff but $12.39km^3$ in accounting the distal and medial part extended into southwestern Japan. Volcanic explosivity indices range 1 to 6, estimating from the volumes of each pyroclastic deposits. The colossal explosivity indices are 5 in Sataegam Tuff, and 6 in Maljandeung Tuff in accounting the distal and medial part. Therefore, it is necessary for appropriate researches regarding possibility of volcanic eruption of the island, and establishment system of the evaluation and preparation for volcanic hazard based on the researches is required.
Dok island comprises Pliocene volcanic products such as a series of volcanoclastic rocks and lavas ranging in composition from alkali basalts, and trachyandesites to trachytes. Compositional variation of the basaltic rocks can be attributed to fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite. Chemical variations among the trachyandesites are caused by fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite with minor amphibole, while trachytes are controlled mainly by feldspar fractionation. Incompatible element abundance ratios and chondrite normalized LREE/HREE ratios (e.g., (La/Yb)c: 24.8 to 32.8 for basalts, 15.6 to 31.2 for trachyandesites) suggest that the origins of the basalts and trachyandesites involve both different degrees of partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization processes. Trace element ratios of the basalts from Dok island are characterized by high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Ba/Th and Th/U and isotopic ratios (Tasumoto and Nakamura, 1991) that are similar to the EM 1 type of oceanic island basalts such as Gough and Tristan da Cunha basalts.
Being mostly made up of highly permeable basalt and volcanic ash soil, Jeju Island's lithosphere characterizes its streams to be dry, flowing only when precipitation is happening. Under this condition, this research was motivated to identify the need of conservation of underground water, which is taking up most of (84% of) Jeju's water usage, and made an attempt to reduce the permeability of stream beds so that it can replace underground water and be used instead. To this end, this study suggested a simple method to make dry streams to carry water all-year-round by reducing permeability of stream floor. The experiment of permeability was performed on the porous basalt and compared it with that of same basalt with volcanic ash soil and Jumunjin sand layer added on top. The results showed a dramatic decrease in permeability of water when both volcanic ash soil and Jumunjin sand is were layered on top of porous basalt. Despite being gained in a controlled environment with a simple test, this result may provide a realistic and effective method of preserving Jeju Island's underground water which ultimately is a method of resolving water related issues.
In this study, to propose simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island using uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength, the estimated values of cohesion and internal friction angle from triaxial and uniaxial compression tests and Brazilian tests were compared in terms of estimation accuracy. This study proposed simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle using the uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island. According to the findings, among the proposed simplified methods, the method using uniaxil compressive strength was most desirable to accurately estimate the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic intact rocks in Jeju Island.
