Recently there are many disasters caused by volcanic activities such as the eruptions in Tungurahua, Ecuador(2014) and $Eyjafjallaj\ddot{o}kull$, Iceland(2010). Therefore, it is required to prepare countermeasures for the disasters. This study analyzes the Baekdu Mountain area, where is the risky area because it is active volcano, based on the observed data and scientific methods in order to assess a risk, produce a hazard map and analyze a degree of risk caused by the volcano. Firstly, it is reviewed for the research about the Baekdu mountain volcanic eruption in 1215(${\pm}15$ years) done by Liu Ruoxin. And the factors causing volcanic disaster, environmental effects, and vulnerability of Baekdu Mountain are assessed by the dataset, which includes the earthquake monitoring data, the volcanic deformation monitoring data, the volcanic fluid geochemical monitoring data, and the socio-economic statistics data. A hazard, especially caused by a volcano, distribution map for the Baekdu Mountain Area is produced by using the assessment results, and the map is used to establish the disaster risk index system which has the four phases. The first and second phases are very high risky area when the Baekdu Mountain erupts, and the third and fourth phases are less dangerous area. The map shows that the center of mountain has the first phase and the farther area from the center has the lower phase. Also, the western of Baekdu Mountain is more vulnerable to get the risk than the eastern when the factors causing volcanic disasters are equally applied. It seems to be caused by the lower stability of the environment and the higher vulnerability.

The Korean peninsula has been known as an area that is free of volcanic disasters. However, recent observations and research results of volcanoes in Far East Asia, including Baedu Mountain and Japanese volcanoes, show that the Korean peninsula is no longer a safe area from volcanic disasters. Since 2012, the Korean government has been developing an IT-based construction technology, VDRS (Volcanic Disaster Response System), for effective volcanic disaster response system. The main users of VDRS are public officers in central or local governments. However, most of them have little experience and knowledge about volcanic disasters. Therefore, it is essential to develop education contents and implement training on volcanic disaster response for effective response in a real disaster situation. In this paper, we deal with the development of a mobile application based on virtual reality (VR) for realistic volcanic disaster response training. The objectives of training are the delivery of knowledge and experience for volcanic disasters. First, VR contents were generated based on spatial information. A 3D model was constructed based on a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and visualization models for meterological effects and various volcanic disaster diffusion effects were implemented for the VR contents. Second, the mobile application for the volcanic disaster response training was implemented. A 12-step story board is proposed for volcanic disaster experience. The application was developed with the Unity3D engine based on the proposed story board to deliver knowledge of various volcanic disasters (volcanic ash, pyroclastic flows, volcanic mudflow etc.). The results of this paper will be used for volcanic disaster response and prevention training and for more realistic training linked with augmented reality technology in the future.
Volcanic rocks including rhyolitic tuff, rhyolite and welded tuff in the Bupyeong silver mine area form a topographic circular structure known as a resurgent caldera. Granitic rocks are emplaced inside and outside area of the circular structure. K-Ar dating and Nd-Sr isotope studies were carried out to invesitigate the origin and petrogenetic evolution of the rhyolitic and granitic magma in the Bupeong silver mine area. Whole rock K-Ar age ranges from 208 to 131 Ma for rhyolitic rocks. Radiometric ages for the granitic rocks are 167.6 Ma for pink feldspar biotite granite from inside granitic pluton of the circular volcanic body, 178.8 Ma for the Kimpo hornblende biotite granite and 111.8 Ma for the Songdo foliated granite from outside granitic plutons of the volcanic body. The radiometric age data indicates that the volcanic activities which are partly overlapped by granite plutonic activities in the Bupyeong mine area had recorded early Jurassic and early Cretaceous in age. Initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the rhyolitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.710~0.719 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5118) are similar to those of granitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.709~0.716 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5116) from inside granite stock. This means that similar source materials of felsic magma responsibles for the Bupyeong volcanic rocks and inside plutonic rocks. Based on the Nd and Sr isotopic compositions, rhyolitic and granitic magmas in the Bupyeong area originated from the partial melting of the old continental crust which has Nd model age ranging from 1500 to 2900 Ma. This is analogous to those of the other Jurassic granitoids in South Korea.
The volcanic history of the volcanic ash cloud movement recorded in the annals of the Choson dynasty in 1654, presumably due to explosive eruptions from Mt. Baekdu volcano. On October 21, 1654, volcanic ash and volcanic gas erupted from Mt. Baekdu could be interpreted as volcanic ash, which was transported to low altitude by winds of north and northeast winds and descended to the south of the peninsula along with volcanic ash clouds. The affected area appeared northward in the southern boundary of Hamgyeongdo, which is estimated to have moved the volcanic ash from Mt. Baekdu to the south of the Korean peninsula. Clouds of volcanic ash have passed through Jeokseong and Jangdan area, Gyeonggido about 500 km away from Mt. Baekdu. This is interpreted as a result of the formation of a volcanic ash cloud along the ground in a curved shape due to the influence of the prevailing wind, which was formed by Plinian-type eruption at Mt. Baekdu. This is reproduced by numerical simulations on the similar weather pattern model.
Soil in Jeju Island is largely classified into dark brown non-volcanic ash soil weathered by basalt, dark brown ash soil and black volcanic ash soil origin from volcanic ash. Non-volcanic ash soil is similar to main land soil which can cultivate rice and barely, however, volcanic ash soil is very sterile therefore even barely cultivation is impossible. Although dolmen distribution, ancestral rites, folk songs and agricultural methods can be clearly classed into regional characteristics, it is hard to adduce humanistic sociological basis. However, regional characteristics can be classified by using soil physic-chemical properties of non-volcanic ash soil and volcanic ash soil. Non-volcanic ash soil region relatively has cheerful folk song, dolmen is found and bunjitgeori ancestral rites are common. One the other hand, there are no dolmen are found in volcanic ash soil area. Sad shamanistic song such as Jinsadetsori is common and firstborn-son takes the lead in ancestral rites in this area. This lesson interprets socio-cultural difference using soil environment.

Korea has been known as volcanic disaster free area. However, recent surveying result shows that Baekdu mountain located in northernmost in the Korean peninsula is not a dormant volcano anymore. When Baekdu mountain is erupting, various damages due to the volcanic ash are expected in South Korea area. Especially, volcanic ash in the air may cause big aviation accident because it can hurt engine or gauges in the airplane. Therefore, it is a crucial issue to interrupt airplane navigation, whose route is overlapped with volcanic ash, after predicting three dimensional dispersion of volcanic ash. In this paper, we deals with 3D visualization techniques for volcanic ash dispersion prediction results. First, we introduce the data acquisition of the volcanic ash dispersion prediction. Dispersion prediction data is obtained from Fall3D model, which is volcanic ash dispersion simulation program. Next, three 3D visualization techniques for volcanic ash dispersion prediction are proposed. Firstly proposed technique is so called 'Cube in the Air', which locates the semitransparent cubes having different color depends on its particle concentration. Second technique is a 'Cube in the Cube' which divide the cube in proportion to particle concentration and locates the small cubes. Last technique is 'Semitransparent Volcanic Ash Plane', which laminates the layer, whose grids present the particle concentration, and apply the semitransparent effect. Based on the proposed techniques, the user could 3D visualize the volcanic ash dispersion prediction results upon his own purposes.
To analyze the characteristics of deposition and dispersion of volcanic ash emitted from Mt. Kirishima on January 26, 2011, several numerical simulations were carried out by using the numerical models including Weather and Research Forecast (WRF) and FLEXPART. The dispersion of ash located under 1 km high tends to be concentrated along the prevailing wind direction on January 26 2011. On the other hand, volcanic ash released on the following day spreads to Kirishima bay due to the intensified high pressure air mass in southern Kyushu. When Siberian air mass was intensified January 26, 2011, the deposition of volcanic ash is concentrated restrictedly in the narrow area along the wind direction of the downwind side of Mt. Kirishima. The development of high pressure air mass over the eruption area tends to induce the intensified horizontal diffusion of volcanic ash. Since the estimated deposition of volcanic ash is agreed well with observed values, the proposed numerical simulation is reasonable to use the assessment on the behavior of volcanic ash.

The Seoguipo Formation occurs only in a small exposure along the coast of the Seoguipo City, but in the subsurface, underlies tile western part of the Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line in the northeastern part of tile island. The Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line is presumed to be a facies boundary that reflects tile distribution of hyaloclastites resulted from submarine volcanic activity. The Seoguipo Formation is distributed in the subsurface along the part which is lower than 400m in average altitude, and occurs at El. -5.76∼-46.63m in tile southern area, El. -41.89∼-57.97m in the western area, El. -13.15∼-50.59m in the northern area. Therefore, the southern area was uplifted after the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. In the subsurface, the vertical depth of the volcanic rocks of the Cheju Volcanic Edifice is El. -40.6m in the southern area, El. -111.3m in the western area, El. -81.5m in the northern area and El. -134.7m in the eastern area. The unconsolidated U Formation, which is, overlying the basement and about 70∼250m thickness underlies the whole island. There is a positive correlation between tile groundwater level and the depth of the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation. Consequently, it is conformed that the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation plays important role for controlling the characteristics of the reservoir of tile groundwater in Cheju Island.
We studied petrological and geochemical characteristics of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the Da Hinggan Ling area northeast China, and discussed tectonic settings and origin of the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in northeast Asia. Volcanic rocks in Da Hinggan Ling area are composed of alkaline to subalkaline basalt-basaltic andesite-andesite-dacite-rhyolite, showing typical BAR(basalt-andesite-rhyolite) association. However, most of the volcanic rocks are basaltic and rhyolitic in composition, and andesitic rocks are relatively rare, which shows bimodal characteristics. Rb, Ba, Th and other incompatible element contents in the volcanic rocks are enriched, but the contents decrease with increasing the compatibility. REEs are fractionated and REE patterns of volcanic rocks are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE. On the tectonomagmatic discriminant diagram of Hf-Th-Nb, they fall into the fields for subduction-related destructive plate margin basalts and its differentiates. We suggest that the tectonomagmatic setting of Da Hinggan Ling area was located at the continental margin arc related with subduction environment during the Mesozoic time or may be derived from mantle plume contaminated geochemically from subducting slabs, although it is, at present within the Asia continent.
