A Study on the VOCs Emission Characteristics in Leather Industries (피혁산업장의 휘발성유기화합물(VOCs) 배출 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The concentrations of major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured using a passive sampler in the leather industries, Shihwa and Banwol industrial complex. The leather industries were classified into four groups in raw materials and main product. The concentrations of total VOCs measured in process for ${\ulcorner}$ manufacture of reconstituted leather and special treated leather${\lrcorner}$was highest. The main VOCs measured in the leather industries was found to be toluene with a average concentration of 1,200 ppb. The major group selected in the leather industries was divided into three groups by the fingerprint analysis and the principal component analysis. The major VOCs in the groups classified by fingerprint analysis were found to be dependent on the characteristics of raw materials and main products.

  • The volatile components of citron peel extracted by three methods, which were SDE (Simultaneous steam distillation & solvent extraction) extraction, solvent extraction and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction were analyzed with gas chromatography. The operation conditions was at the temperature between $30^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$ and perssure between 1000 psi and 2500 psi. The aromatic compound was the principal component extracted, the optimum conditions for limonene extraction were 2000 psi and $40^{\circ}C$.

Study on the growth of vapor bubble in devolatilization of polymers

  • The growth of a spherical vapor bubble contained in a large body of upper convected Maxwell fluid is theoretically analyzed under the devolatilization condition of polymer by using a Galerkin FEM in the Lagrangian frame. Using the finite element technique, a fully explicit numerical scheme is developed both for the calculation of pressure distribution and for the tracking of bubble surface. Oscillatory behavior in bubble radius is observed during growth and the oscillatory behavior is found to be due to the interaction of mass transfer resistance and elasticity. It is found that the elasticity of fluid accelerates the growth and removal of volatile component. It is also found that the bubble growth in the devolatilization of polymers is affected by both mass transfer resistance and viscoelasticity of fluids.

  • Adsorption isotherms of dichloromethane and 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane on an activated carbon pellet, Norit B4, were studied. For these chemicals, Sips equation gave the best fit for the single component adsorption isotherm. The adsorption affinity on activated carbon was greater for dichloromethane than that of 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane. An experimental and theoretical study was made for the adsorption of dichloromethane and 1, 1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane in a fixed bed. Experimental results were used to examine the effect of operation variables, such as feed concentration, flow rate and bed height. Intraparticle diffusion was able to be explained by surface diffusion mechanism. An adsorption model baked on the linear driving force approximation (LDFA) was found to be applicable to fit the experimental data.

  • The VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) is one of the major cause for the atmosphere pollution. Breakthrough behavior of benzene and toluene in adsorption bed packed with activated carbon was experimentally studied. Composition and temperature of the gas flowing in the bed was measured and breakthrough curves for each component was obtained. Breakthrough time of benzene was earlier than that of toluene due to relatively weak adsorptivity. The relationship between breakthrough time and flow rate was obtained. The shape of temperature change with time was dependent on the position in the bed. Temperature changed faster and sharper in the inlet than in the outlet. It was noted that breakthrough behavior could be affected by the heat transfer properties.

  • We designed the artificial olfactory sensing system (Electronic Nose) using MOS type sensor array fur recognizing and analyzing odour. The response of individual sensors of sensor array, each processing a slightly different response towards the sample volatiles, can provide enough information to discriminate between sample odours. In this paper, we applied clustering algorithm for dimension reduction, such as linear projection mapping (PCA method), nonlinear mapping (Sammon mapping method) and the combination of PCA and Sammon mapping having a better discriminating ability. The odours used are VOC (Volatile chemical compound) and Toxic gases.

  • Peanut is one of the principal oil seeds in the world as a rich source of edible oil and protein. Peanut quality arises as a result of a complex interaction of genetic, physiological and biochemistry processes that produce the chemical composition of the peanut seed. The major factors influencing seed quality are degree of maturity and digging and drying, curing and storage as a series of harvesting. The end products, peanut butter, salted seed, confections, roasting stock and by-products are favored in world-wide because of their unique roasted peanut flavor, Literatures are reviewed mainly focusing on the physiological properties and nutritional quality of oil, protein and flavor in peanut. Chemical properties of protein and oil, and volatile flavor component in peanut seeds are studied. The objectives of this paper were to review and summarize the results obtained from the improving quality breeding program and evaluation of the chemical composition in peanut up to now.

  • Consumers primarily consider flavor when they take yogurt. Recent researches on yogurt flavor productron its analytical technique have been extensively developed. These studies have provided a better understanding on the role of starter culture microorganisms on flavor formation and degradation. Yogurt volatile flavor compounds produced by the lactic cultures include acetaldehyde, diacetyl, ethanol and organic acid. Among them, acetaldehyde is recognized as a principal flavor component. since yogurt contains a delicate and low intense flavor, mild sample isolation techniques and sensitive identification means might be used. This paper attempts to discuss recent findings in yogurt flavor and to describe the application of yogurt flavor separation techniques. The section on practical aspects of culture selection based on flavor compound production and flavor analysis is also included.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a real-time sensor for beef freshness. Contents of biogenic amines (BA), saccharides and proteins were highly related with freshness on the beef meats. Relations of those chemical contents and NIR spectra were studied. Tyramine showed the best correlation coefficient at 1250nm. Correlation between VBN (volatile basic nitrogen) and K value, which were both freshness measurement method, was determined by the PCR (principle component regression). The correlation model had the values of $R^2=0.989$ and SEC=1.78, respectively. The model was validated at $R^2=0.963$ and SEP=2.285, respectively.

  • Fourteen volatile components including eight allypyrocatechol analogs were isolated and identified from the essential oil and ether soluble fraction of Philippine Piper bettle leaves (Piperaceae). The major constituents of Philippine Piper betle oil were chavibetol and chavibetol acetate. Capilary GC analysis of the oil showed chavibetol (53.1%), chavibetol acetate (15.5%), caryophyllene (3.79%), allypyrocatechol diacetate (0.71%), campene (0.48), chavibetol methylether (=methyl eugenol, 0.48%), eugenol (0/32%), $\alpha$-pinene(0.21%), $\beta$-pinene(0.21%), $\alpha$-limonene(0.14%), safrole (0.11%), 1.8-cineol(0.04%), and allylpyrocatechol monoacetate. The major component of the ether soluble fraction was allylpyrocatechol (2.38% of the leaves).
