  • The purpose of this study is to analyze firm's motivation of participating and investing in apprenticeship in Germany and Korea, and to investigate institutional factors influencing firm's motivation. By comparing institutional factors of the two countries, it aims to drawing out policy implications for improving Korean apprenticeship. The main method for data collection was comprehensive literature review on international organizations, each countries' government and research institutes' policy materials, statistical data, research outputs and media resources related to each countries' apprenticeship. Considering whether firm's motivation for participating and investing in apprenticeship is production-oriented or investment-oriented, Germany is more inclined to investment motivation with firm's covering net cost during apprenticeship period. On the other hand, Korea is more inclined toward production orientation with firm's expectation of gaining net profit during the training period. Why is firm's training motivation different in these two countries? The author tried to find the reason from the difference of institutional factors of the countries by dividing institutional factors into 4 categories: context(tripartite relations, legal framework), input (flexibility of the system, government incentive), process(training contents, training duration, quality assurance), and output(completion/retention rate, apprentice's productivity). The key implication from the comparative analysis of institutional factors is that it is necessary to enforce companies to have "accountability" on the minimum critical elements, but also to ensure them to have "autonomy" on the rest of the elements.

  • In this research, we applied the problem-based learning (PBL) on a college computer system programming course and analyzed how it affected students' academic achievement and job essential skills. After course contents analysis, we divided the course into three subsections and provided three problems for each subsection. For measuring the effect on academic achievement, we compared with scores of the previous year's students. For job essential skills, we used Korea collegiate essential skills assessment (K-CESA) operated by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training. Students took the test twice before and after the course. Results showed that PBL has positive effects on both academic achievement and job essential skills.

  • This study suggests that improvement of theses and dissertations retrieval can be made by applying appropriate academic department classification. We applied the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training(KRIVET)'s department classification to these and dissertations being serviced by Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS). The results show that the chosen classification appropriately represents diverse academic department information contained in the theses and dissertations either published or used within the recent three year period. The study also makes a number of suggestions that will facilitate the application of an academic department classification to a live system.

  • For the purpose of developing Milk-based nutritional education program, this study analyzed the awareness of milk and milk nutritional knowledge of elementary/middle/high school students and set appropriate instructional goals for milk nutritional education program. According to the analysis results, 49.6% of total subjects know a little about the milk, otherwise 42.3% of total subjects don't know it Elementary school students know better than other students. Therefore, the instructional goals of nutritional education program were set as follows, that improve the level of the awareness about milk, and to increase the understanding on the knowledge about milk, and to practice proper milk intake behavior. Based on these goals established as the above, educational contents were established that would be expected in elementary, middle, and high school students after milk nutritional education. Therefore, the development of education program and the evaluation of education effects were to be performed on the basis of educational goals and contents for milk nutritional education program.

  • In this paper, to analyze the meaning of middle-aged men's economic activities, TEXTOM was used to analyze them. The data collection period is set from 2017 to 2019. Among the collected data, 100 refined words were converted into a matrix in which the degree of social connection was calculated, and the keyword network analysis was performed again with the NetDraw program. According to the study, middle-aged men put more meaning on their current work and family than their future retirement. Also, the related word commonly included in the top five for all three years was 'work'. Related words commonly included in the top 10 were 'old age', 'family', and 'work', and in 2018 and 2019, 'health' was included in the top 10. As a result of this, the middle-aged men living in the modern age are the generation who keep their families through economic activities and are increasingly interested in health and prepare for retirement. Therefore, policy support for stable economic activities is needed to improve the quality of life for middle-aged men. It is necessary to extend the retirement age, expand jobs and provide effective vocational training so that it can handle its role as the head of a family. In addition, measures should be taken to reduce the wage gap between highly skilled and low-skilled workers.

  • The present study is designed to trace the successful reform steps taken within the employment support system in the UK and to extract a set of instructive implications for Korea's future reform path towards an efficient employment support system conductive to youth employment by setting out an analytical framework that links the British experience to the Korean context. To this end, this study focuses on three major aspects of employment support system: delivery mechanism, method of delivery, and programs. Implications drawn from the comparative analysis are as follows. First, the current employment support services in Korea-including job placement service, vocational training, and public works-should be more tightly integrated and delivered in a more consistent fashion in order to become highly accessible to the unemployed. Second, the cooperative network between employment service providers and the corporate sector as demander of labor should be institutionalized in order to make the employment support system more responsive to labor demand. Third, to create an enhanced employment support system that counts in individual differences of the unemployed would require continued, in-depth consultation and case management services along with fully specialized employment caseworkers who would provide them. Fourth, the government should take the initiative and be unflaggingly supportive both institutionally and financially in making future efforts to continuously improve the employment support system on the basis of the implications mentioned above.

  • An alternative method for team diversity studies is to examine demographic faultlines. A concept of demographic faultline enables us to better understand team dynamics with multidimensional diversity. This study suggests the demographic faultline as a new situational factorto influence the relationship between leader teamwork behaviors and a climate of support for innovation. When subgroups divided by demographic faultline are homogeneous within them and heterogeneous between them, the homogeneity may increase intimacy in each subgroup while the heterogeneity may increase exclusiveness between those subgroups. We argued that a leader could play an important role to build a cooperative relationship between faultline-based subgroups and highlight positive aspects of developing and maintaining subgroups in organizations. With a sample of 81 teams (558 employees), it was examined how leader teamwork behaviors would affect a team-level climate of support for innovation and how this relationship would be moderated by each team's demographic faultline (gender, age, and educational specialty). As predicted, it was found that there was a significant positive relationship between each leader's teamwork behaviors and each team's climate of support for innovation. In addition, this relationship was stronger for teams with strong faultline than with weak faultline. Our findings and their implications were further discussed.

  • With the emphasis on core competencies, the University of Seoul has exerted efforts to reflect the importance of core competencies in university curricula. The main assessment tool used in Korea is the Korea Collegiate Essential Skills Assessment (K-CESA), developed by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET). This study examined whether core competencies measured using K-CESA are valid as a tool for assessing educational achievements among college students, and analyzed the correlation between K-CESA scores and course grades. The analysis was performed on approximately 204 engineering students at the University of Seoul. According to the correlation analysis between core competencies and courses, MSC courses were shown to be related to the resource and through information use competency and higher order thinking competency. Through the Analysis of Variance, students in the accreditation programs and students living in urban area showed higher competency scores. In the multiple regression, it was shown that Accreditation and MSC courses grades were the important variables to predict the competency of the students. Based on these findings, we confirmed that the K-CESA tool has a certain level of correlation with academic performance and that it functions as one of several ways to evaluate the program outcomes of engineering education accreditation.
