  • In this study, remote articulation training system which connects the hearing disabled trainee and the speech therapist via B-ISDN is introduced. The hearing disabled does not have the hearing feedback of his own pronuciation, and the chance of watching his speech organs movement trajectory will offer him the self-training of articulation. So the system has two purposes of self articulation training and trainer's on-line checking in remote place. We estimate the vocal tract articultory movements from the speech signal using inverse modelling and display the movement trajectoy on the sideview of human face graphically. The trajectories of trainees articulation is displayed along with the reference trajectories, so the trainee can control his articulating to make the two trajectories overlapped. For on-line communication and ckecking training record the system has the function of video conferencing and tranferring articulatory data.

  • A 47-year-old man was referred for TEF. He underwent tracheostomy three months ago to maintain prolonged ventilator care. Computed tomography (CT) scan and fiberoptic examination showed bilateral vocal cord palsy with median fixation and about 2 inch sized long segmental tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) tract along the necrotic cricoid and tracheal cartilages. Narrow field total laryngectomy was performed to remove devitalized cartilages and mucosa, and repair TEF. He discharged without complication except mild stenotic change of tracheal fenestration 19 days later.

  • In area of the speech synthesis, the waveform coding with high quality are mainly used to the synthesis by analysis. However, it is difficult to applying the waveform coding to the synthesis by rule, because the parameters of this coding are not classified as either excitation parameters and vocal tract parameters. In this paper, we proposed a new pitch change method that can alter the pitch periods in the waveform coding. The proposed method expands the pitch period by the LPC synthesis method, and then the period is compressed by the waveform halving technique. Thus, it is possible that the waveform coding is carried out the synthesis by rule in speech processing.

  • Gastroesophageal reflux is thought to be an important etiology of the various upper aerodigestive tract disease. To investigate the role of gastric acid and pepsin as an etiologic factor of laryngotracheal stenosis, and the difference of injury by synthetic gastric juice between in ciliated respiratory epithelium and in squamous epithelium, experimental study was carried out using rabbits. Mucociliary transport affected by synthetic gastric juice was also studied in dogs. Synthetic gastric juice of low pH caused serious damage and Impairment of mucociliary transport in the epithelium of the larynx and trachea. Gastric acid played major role in the mucosal damage. Squamous epithelium of vocal folds and pharynx was more resistant to synthetic gastric juice than respiratory epitheium. In conclusion, gastroesophageal reflux may be an etiologic factor in the developement of laryngotracheal stenosis, so the adequate management is necessory In patients of laryngotracheal stenosis.

  • Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare and occurs mainly in the upper aerodigestive tract such as the oral cavity, esophagus and vocal cords. It is a unique variant of squamous cell carcinoma. We report the case of a patient with spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma involving the mandible. At initial examination, overlying mucosa of that lesion was normal appearance. One week later, that lesion showed ulcerative and bloody change and rapid growth in size. This case showed unpredictable rapid growth although rapid growth in size was suspected of undergoing malignancy.

  • This paper deals with voice similarities between sisters who are supposed to have common physiological characteristics from a single biological mother. Nine pairs of sisters who are believed to have similar voices participated in this experiment. The speech samples obtained from one pair of sisters were eliminated in the analysis because their perceptual score was relatively low. The words were measured in both isolation and context, and the subjects were asked to read the text five times with about three seconds of interval between readings. Recordings were made at natural speed in a quiet room. The data were analyzed in pitch and formant frequencies using CSL (Computerized Speech Lab) and PCQuirer. It was found that data of the initial vowels are much more similar and homogeneous than those of vowels in other positions. The acoustic data showed that voice similarities are strikingly high in both pitch and formant frequencies. It is assumed that statistical data obtained from this experiment can be used as a guideline for modelling speaker identification and speaker verification.

  • In this paper, I investigate the acoustic correlates of a vowel's coarticulatory dynamics manifested in preceding and following consonants along two dimensions of the vocal tract: place of articulation and degree of constriction. Two dimensional coarticulation is not necessarily executed either concomitantly or proportionally, and the modification induced by coarticulation with a vowel in CVC structures is merely restricted to the CV portion; that is, the prevocalic consonant is modified solely in its constriction location. This is consistent with the observation that C-to-V place assimilation does not accompany consonant lenition in phonology, which suggests that phonetic nature is effectively reflected in phonological patterns.

  • Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis (MSL), also called Madelung's disease, is a rare disorder of unknown etiology and characterized by abnormal accumulation of large subcutaneous fatty masses in neck, shoulder, and upper trunk. MSL has known to predominantly affect middle-aged men with a history of alcoholism. Although the clinical course of MSL is considered to be slowly progressive, in advanced stage, fatty masses in the neck may compress the upper aerodigestive tract, resulting in dyspnea and dysphagia. The treatment of MSL is surgical resection, but radical excision is very difficult and recurrence after surgery is frequent. We report the case of 55-year-old man with long lasting MSL, which caused severe airway obstruction. This patient was admitted with progressive dyspnea and massive accumulation of fat around the vocal cord that was detected on a neck CT scan. This abnormal fatty infiltration in supraglottic region caused upper airway obstruction.

  • This paper is a study to find a new method of feature selection for vibrationof buman body by analyzing correlationof vibration between King Songdok Bell and Human body. The vibration characteristics are analyzed by matching body, vocal tract, diaphragm and asymmetrical clements of human body with Bell, resonator, hole in the ground and asymmetical elements. In the result, the characteristics of sound vibrationof King Songdok Bell is useful to apply it to vibration characteristics of human body because the vibration characteristics of ech elements is alike.

  • This paper proposes speaker recognition algorithm which includes both the pitch parameter and the fuzzy inference. This study proposes a pitch detection method PVPF(peak and valley pitch detection fuction) by means of comparing spectra which utilizes the transform characteristics between time and frequency. In this paper, makes reference pattern using membership function and performs vocal tract recognition of common character using fuzzy pattern matching in order to include time variation width for non-linear utterance time.
