임신말 모체 및 제대혈의 비타민 B(sub)12 농도와 임신결과와의 상관성 (Serum Vitamin B(sub)12 Levels of Maternal-Umbilical Cord Blood and Pregnancy Outcomes)

  • Vitamin B(sub)12(cobalamin) is an essential nutrient in human and it is particularly important during pregnancy. Nevertheless very few studies have reported, concerning vitamin B(sub)12 in relation with reproduction. This study was conducted to evaluate the vitamin B(sub)12 nutrition status of Korean pregnant women and to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin B(sub)12 levels of maternal-umbilical cord blood and pregnancy outcomes. Dietary vitamin B(sub)12 intakes of the pregnants were estimated by semiquantitative frequency questionnaire. Serum vitamin B(sub)12 levels in both maternal blood and umbilical cord blood of 30 pregnant women at delivery were measured by radioimmunoassay. Mean vitamin B(sub)12 intake was 3.3$\pm$1.4$\mu\textrm{g}$/d which was 125.8% of the Korean RDA(2.6$\mu\textrm{g}$) for vitamin B(sub)12 level of umbilical cord blood was 607.8$\pm$282.9pg/ml, more than two fold of maternal vitamin B(sub)12 level 268.6$\pm$97.8pg/ml. This finding indicates that fetal uptake of vitamin B(sub)12 in the fetus may be due to an active transport mchanism across the placenta. Umbilical cord blood vitamin B(sub)12 levels were highly correlated with maternal levels($r^2$=0.548, p<0.001), showing that fetal vitamin B(sub)12 level is affected by maternal status. However there was no significant correlation between the serum vitamin B(sub)12 levels in maternal-umbilical cord blood and the pregnancy outcomes except for the birth weight. Maternal-umbilical serum vitamin B(sub)12 levels were the highest in the group of birth weight 3.0-3.5kg, and the lowest in the group of birthweight below 3.0kg. 상이한 비타민 $B_12$ 영양상태에 있는 흰쥐에 있어서 식이중의 펙틴이 비타민 $B_12$의 흡수에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Dietary Pectin on the Absorption of Vitamin $B_12$ in Rats in Various Vitamin $B_12$ Status)

  • The effect of vitamin B12 status and pectin feeding on vitamin B12 absorption in rats were studied. Rats in low, medium, and high vitamin B12 status were fed either fiber-free or 10% pectin diet and absorption of a single oral dose of vitamin B12 status of rats was verified by urinary methylmalonic acid and liver vitamin B12 measurements. Absorption of vitamin B12 tended to increase as the rats became deficient in vitamin B12 , although the difference was not significant . Pectin inhibited absorption of vitamin B12 regardless of the vitamin B12 status of the rats. The results demonstrated that inhibition of vitamin B12 absorption by pectin would be a possible mechanism for the impairment of vitamin B12 status due to chronic pectin feeding.

Dietary source of vitamin $B_{12}$ intake and vitamin $B_{12}$ status in female elderly Koreans aged 85 and older living in rural area

  • Recently, we found and analyzed vitamin $B_{12}$ in some Korean traditional plant foods which had not reported, yet. This study was to investigate vitamin $B_{12}$ intake and its dietary sources and the vitamin $B_{12}$ status in the very old elderly Koreans. We measured serum vitamin $B_{12}$ level and estimated the amounts of vitamin $B_{12}$ intake from different dietary sources in female elderly Koreans aged 85 and over who had consumed a relatively low animal traditional diet for the whole life. The average age of the subjects (n = 127) was 98.0 years (85-108 years). The assessment on energy and nutrient intake involved a one-day 24-hour recall, and serum vitamin $B_{12}$ concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. Overall diet pattern was not different between the 85-99 yr-old group and centenarians, except centenarians were taking more dairy product. The average ratio of plant food to animal food consumption was 87.5:12.5 in weight. The average vitamin $B_{12}$ intake of our subjects was 3.2 ${\mu}g$, and 52.7% of subjects consumed under estimated average requirement, 2.0 ${\mu}g$/day. On dietary source, 67.3% of dietary vitamin $B_{12}$ was from meat, eggs and fishes and 30.6% was from plant foods, such as soybean-fermented foods, seaweeds, and kimchi. The average serum vitamin $B_{12}$ concentration was 450.5 pg/mL, and low serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (< 200 pg/mL) was found in 9.6% of subjects. Dietary vitamin $B_{12}$ intake was significantly lower in subjects with low serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (0.79 ${\mu}g$/day) than those with normal serum vitamin $B_{12}$ (3.47 ${\mu}g$/day). There were no significant difference in vitamin $B_{12}$ intake and its dietary sources and serum vitamin $B_{12}$ level between the 85-99 yr- old group and centenarians. In conclusion, several plant-origin foods including seaweed, soybean-fermented foods, and kimchi, may contribute significantly to good vitamin $B_{12}$ status in very old elderly Koreans.

Vitamin B-2와 (또는 ) Vitamin B-6 결핍이 흰쥐의 Hematologic Profile에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Vitamin B-2 and (or) Vitamin B-6 Deficiency on Hematologic Profile in Rats)

  • Vitamin B-2와 Vitamin B-6 결핍이 hematologic profile에 미치는 영향을 in vivo 계에서 알고보고자 하였다. 흰쥐에게 Vitamin B-2 결핍(-B2)식이, Vitamin B-6결핍(-B6)식이, Vitamin B-2와 Vitamin B-6복합 결핍(-B2-B6) 식이 또는 통제 식이를 6주 동안 공급한 후 희생시켜 Hematocrit (Ht), Hemoglobin(Hb), 혈장철 (PI), Transferrin포화도 (TS), 간장철 (LI)를 비교하였다. 통제군에 비하여 -B2군에서는 PI, TS, LI가 유의하게 낮았으나 Ht와 Hb은 유의한 차이가 없으며, -B6군에서는 Ht와 Hb는 유의하게 낮았으나 LI는 유의하게 높았다. 통제군에 비하여 -B2-B6군에서는 Hb, PI, TS, LI가 -B2군과 -B6군의 중간수준이었으며 Ht는 낮은 수준을 나타냈다. 2주간의 보충식이 후에는 -B2군과 -B6군에서 모든 혈액지표와 LI가 개선된 것으로 나타났다. 본연구의 결과는 Vitamin B-2와 Vitamin B-6의 섭취가 영양적 빈혈군에서 혈액 지표를 개선시켜 빈혈의 예방또는 치료에 중요하다는 것을 시사한다.

육류 및 수산물을 이용한 조리식품에 함유된 수용성 비타민 함량 (Water-soluble Vitamin Content in Dishes Containing Meat and Seafood)

  • In this study, the content of water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B12 (cyanocobalamin), and C (ascorbic acid) in dishes containing meat and seafood consumed in Korea were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet and fluorescence detection. All analyses were performed under strict quality control of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12, and C. The highest content of vitamin B1 was observed in Bugeo-gangjeong (1.373 mg/100 g) and the highest level of vitamin B2 (5.162 mg/100 g) was found in pig liver. Bugeo-gangjeong showed the highest content of vitamin B3 (21.676 mg/100 g), and kkomak-muchim contained considerable amounts (43.310 mg/100 g) of vitamin B5. Vitamin B6 was not detected in most seafood dishes except for yangnyeom myeongran-jeot (0.274 mg/100 g) and was present at low levels or not present at all in meat dishes. The highest content of vitamin B7 was 6.506 ㎍/100 g in saeu-jeon and kkomak-muchim showed the highest content (21.132 ㎍/100 g) of vitamin B12. The highest content of vitamin C was in yangnyeom myeongran-jeot (84.508 mg/100 g). In addition, the analysis methods of each water-soluble vitamin were verified. These results showed that seafood-based ingredients in several dishes could be a good source of water-soluble vitamins.

수유부의 식이 섭취 및 건강관련 습관이 모유내 비타민 B 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Maternal Dietary Intakes and Health-Related Behaviors on Vitamin B Concentrations in Human Milk)

  • Adequate vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ intakes are known to be important for the growth and development in infants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate concentrations of vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ in human milk and to investigate the relationship between vitamin B levels in human milk and dietary habits and other health-related behaviors. Milk samples were obtained from 38 healthy lactating women (aged 29.0 $\pm$ 3.2 years) who are participating in the cohort study on pregnant women. Vitamin $B_2$ concentrations in human milk were positively correlated with maternal vitamin $B_2$ intakes in lactating mothers. Vitamin $B_6$, folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ concentrations in human milk were not correlated with maternal B vitamin intakes. Vitamin $B_6$ concentrations in human milk were negatively correlated with the amount of postpartum weight loss. The vitamin B concentrations in human milk were not associated with maternal age, height, weight and parity. Mothers who were exposed to indirect smoking had lower vitamin $B_2$ concentrations, and those who reported to consume health foods had higher vitamin $B_2$ concentrations in their milk. In conclusion, lactating women need to consume more vitamin B intakes for the growth and development in infants. Further researches are needed to find other diet and health-related factors which influence on B vitamin concentrations in human milk.

Evaluation of vitamin $B_6$ intake and status of 20- to 64-year-old Koreans

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Recent research regarding vitamin $B_6$ status including biochemical index is limited. Thus, this study estimated intakes and major food sources of vitamin $B_6$; determined plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP); and assessed vitamin $B_6$ status of Korean adults. MATERIALS/METHODS: Three consecutive 24-h diet recalls and fasting blood samples were collected from healthy 20- to 64-year-old adults (n = 254) living in the Seoul metropolitan area, cities of Kwangju and Gumi, Korea. Vitamin $B_6$ intake and plasma PLP were analyzed by gender and by vitamin $B_6$ supplementation. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine associations of vitamin $B_6$ intake and plasma PLP. RESULTS: The mean dietary and total (dietary plus supplemental) vitamin $B_6$ intake was $1.94{\pm}0.64$ and $2.41{\pm}1.45mg/day$, respectively. Median (50th percentile) dietary intake of men and women was 2.062 and 1.706 mg/day. Foods from plant sources provided 70.61% of dietary vitamin $B_6$ intake. Only 6.3% of subjects consumed total vitamin $B_6$ less than Estimated Average Requirements. Plasma PLP concentration of all subjects was $40.03{\pm}23.71nmol/L$. The concentration of users of vitamin $B_6$ supplements was significantly higher than that of nonusers (P < 0.001). Approximately 16% of Korean adults had PLP levels < 20 nmol/L, indicating a biochemical deficiency of vitamin $B_6$, while 19.7% had marginal vitamin $B_6$ status. Plasma PLP concentration showed positive correlation with total vitamin $B_6$ intake (r = 0.40984, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, vitamin $B_6$ intake of Korean adults was generally adequate. However, one-third of subjects had vitamin $B_6$ deficiency or marginal status. Therefore, in some adults in Korea, consumption of vitamin $B_6$-rich food sources should be encouraged.

Analysis of Vitamin $B_{12}$ in the Korean Representative Foods and Dietary Intake Assessment for Koreans

  • This study was conducted to provide a vitamin $B_{12}$ database for the representative Korean food items and to assess the dietary intake assessment of vitamin $B_{12}$ for Koreans. The vitamin $B_{12}$ content of 106 foods had been determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using column switching method. Rich sources of vitamin $B_{12}$ were meats, milk, and egg ($0.3-3.4\;{\mu}g/100g$). Vegetables and fruits contained vitamin $B_{12}$ below limit of detection (LOD). The major food sources for vitamin $B_{12}$ intake were milk (72.0%), meats (22.3%), egg (3.6%), and fishes & shellfishes (2.1%). Mean vitamin $B_{12}$ intake of Koreans was $3.16\;{\mu}g$/person/day. The proportion of population with intake below estimate average requirement (EAR) and above recommended intake (RI) of vitamin $B_{12}$ was 60.7 and 36.5%, respectively. The vitamin $B_{12}$ intake level of young children with 1-2 years which was 834.6% of RI while the intake level of the older adults 50 years and older was only 70.0% of RI. Also, there were regional differences between urban and rural area. The population with intake below RI was larger than that with intake above RI in Korea.

비타민 B6 필요량: 영양상태 판정지표 및 영향요인 (Vitamin B6 Requirement: Indicators and Factors Affecting)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish the selection of indicators for estimating and factors affecting the requirement of vitamin B6. There has been a need to establish the human requirements of vitamin $B_6$ since vitamin $B_6$ is thought to be involved in more than one hundred biochemical reactions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids, glucose, and lipid, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters. For the review of the literature, this study included from early findings of the sixties to studies of 2009. This study suggests that plasma pyridoxal 5' phosphate (PLP) is the best single indicator of vitamin $B_6$ status for the healthy but not for the non-healthy. Erythrocyte aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activation by PLP as an indirect measure and urinary 4-pyridoxic acid excretion as a direct measure are useful as supporting indicators. Bioavailability, nutrient interaction, physiological need, and chronic diseases may increase the requirement for vitamin $B_6$. However, these effects can not be quantified due to insufficient evidences.

해양환경보전에 있어서의 미생물학적 연구 I. 군산 앞바다에 있어서의 Vitamin $B_{12}$, Thiamine 및 Biotin의 분포 (Microbiological Study on the Preservation of Marine Environments I. Distribution of vitamin $B_{12}$, thiamine and biotin in the sea water of Kunsan)

  • 해태의 양식이 권장되고 있고 패류양식이 성행되었던 서해 군산앞 근해인 격포해역에 있어서 식물 plankton의 증식에 필요한 3종의 B군 vitamin-vitamin $B_{12}$, thiamine 및 biotin에 관하여 해수중의 분포와 그 양적 소장을 조사하여 타의 환경요인과 비교 검토하였다. 1. 본 조사해역은 남해연안만들과는 달리 조석의 차가 커서 서해의 외양수와의 교류가 잘 이루어질 뿐만 아니라 폐수근원이 될만한 하천이나 공장등이 없어 비교적 정상이라고 말할 수 있다. 2. 격포해역의 해수중의 vitamin $B_{12}$, thiamine 및 biotin의 농도는 각각 $1.36{\sim}3.95ng/l,\;u{\sim}0.4ng/l,\;1.4{\sim}6.3ng/l$이었다. 시료채취지점에 따르는 차이가 없었으나 하계의 양은 동계보다 2배양이나 높았다. 3. 이 해역의 해수중의 vitamin 양은 남해연안 가막양의 것에 비하여 vitamin $B_{12}$, biotin의 경우 1/2 에 불과하엿다. 4. Chlorophyll a 함량과 vitamin $B_{12}$ 및 thiamino과는 상관관계가 없었으나, biotin의 경우는 정의 유의한 상관관계가 있었다. 5. vitamin 함량과 호기성 종속영양세균수와는 상관관계를 나타내고 있지 않아 이 해역에 있어서 vitamin생산은 세균에 의한다기 보다는 식물 plak-ton 및 기타 원인에 더 큰 의의가 존재할 것으로 사료된다.
