This paper presents a fabrication method of microcapsules encapsulating fluorescent nanoparticles sensitive to an organic liquid, which is potentially applicable to the encapsulation of protein, cell and drug. It uses the supra-molecular self-assembly of a block copolymer at the interface of the stable and controllable droplets of water suspended with fluorescent nanoparticles and the polymer solved organic. The size and uniformity of the microcapsules were examined for the various polymer concentrations by using SEM image analysis. The maximum standard deviation of the produced microcapsules of less than 3.5% was obtained from the microcapsules produced from the same conditions. The inclusion of fluorescent nanoparticles was visualized in the fluorescence microscope and by using TEM image. It is shown that this fabrication method can provide the uniform size microcapsules with a higher inclusion.
The inlet flow of centrifugal blower were quantitatively visualized using particle image velocimetry. Because the centrifugal blower system is one of the key parts of EV battery cooling system, the quantitative information of flow field of centrifugal blower is important to design and optimize the cooling system. Two types of inlet parts were used in this study. One is the straight inlet and the other is a bended one. The results showed the flow asymmetry exists in the straight model due to the pressure difference in the blower. In case of the bended one, the separation bubble and the increase of head loss appeared compared with the straight model.
The variations of the temperature field in a passenger compartment were measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) solution. This temperature measurement technique was proved to be useful for analyzing the ventilation flow. The flow field in the passenger compartment was visualized using a particle streak method with pulsed laser light sheet. The temperature field and flow field in the passenger copartment were affected significantly by the ventilation mode. The panel-vent mode heating had shorter elapse time to reach a uniform temperature than the foot-vent mode under the same ventilation condition and nonuniformity inside the passenger compartment could be minimized effectively by using the bilevel heating mode. The temperature increase rate in the rear passenger compartment was iower than the front compartment, especially in the vicinity of the rear seat occupants' knee level.
Recently microscale biofluid flows have been receiving large attention in various research areas. However, most conventional imaging techniques are unsatisfactory due to difficulties encountered in the visualization of microscale biological flows. Recent advances in optics and digital image processing techniques have made it possible to develop several advanced micro-PIV/PTV techniques. They can be used to get quantitative velocity field information of various biofluid flows from visualized images of tracer particles. In this paper, as new advanced micro-PIV techniques suitable for biofluid flow analysis, the basic principle and typical applications of the time-resolved micro-PIV and X-ray micro-PIV methods are explained. As a 3D velocity field measurement technique for measuring microscale flows, holographic micro-PTV method is introduced. These advanced PIV/PTV techniques can be used to reveal the basic physics of various microscale biological flows and will play an important role in visualizing veiled biofluid flow phenomena, for which conventional methods have many difficulties to analyze.
For development of SDI(Spark-ignited Direct Injection) engine, stratified mixture formation with adequate strength at spark plug was required in wide range of engine operating conditions. So, spray structure under high ambient pressure and spray distribution after impingement on piston bowl in motoring engine was visualized by using laser equipments. Also, incylinder bulk flow structure was measured by using PIV (Paiticle Image Velocimetry) system. Counter-rotating tumble port and bowl piston was found effective to conserve bulk motion directed to spark plug in compression stroke. In addition, mask attached near valve seat in intake port was proposed to attenuate conventional tumble component and enhance counter-rotating tumble component.

An imaging technique to visualize the internal defects in a plate-type nuclear fuel specimen was developed by using an active optical interferometer for a nondestructive quality inspection. A periodic thermal wave having a sinusoidal intensity pattern induced a periodical strain variation for the specimen. The varying strain image was acquired using an optical laser interferometer. The strain distribution over the internal defects will be distorted in an acquired strain image because a part of the thermal wave will be reflected from these defects during propagation. In this paper, internal defects were efficiently visualized by sequentially accumulating the extracted defect components. The experimental results confirmed that the developed visualization system can be a valuable tool to detect the internal defects in plate-type nuclear fuel.
A new digital image processing method for measuring of the flank wear of cutting tool is presented. The method is based on computer vision technology in which the tool is illuminated by two halogen lamps and the wear zone is visualized using a CCD camera. The image is converted into digital pixel and processed to detect the wearland width. As a conclusion, it has been proved that the average wearland area and mzximum peak values of the flank wear width can monitored effectively to a measuring resolution of 0.01mm.
The detection of lymph node metastasis is an important step in tumor staging and is significant for therapy planning. It has been challenged to yield an appropriate image with diagnostic methods such as Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Computed Tomography (CT). Though CT has been used widely and accessed easily to show internal organs, it can hardly provide difference between lymph node and adjacent vessel or fat tissue. It has been well established that MR can reveal the subtle discrepancy within soft tissue. This study investigated the suitability of MR lymph node imaging without contrast enhancement by comparison of T1-weighted image (T1WI) and T2- weighted image (T2WI) in ten normal rabbits. According to the pulse sequence optimized from preliminary study, T1-weighted spin-echo (repetition time/echo time=400/12 ms) and T-2 weighted fast spin-echo (repetition time/echo time=3500/84 ms) images covering the hind limbs and pelvic region were acquired at 1.5 T. Two radiologists scrupulously evaluated the MR images in consensus. And signal intensity of lymph nodes was compared with that of adjacent fat. Statistical analysis showed that T1-weighted coronal image visualized the lymph nodes (iliac, superficial inguinal and popliteal lymph nodes) quickly and consistently rather than T2-weighted one. Conclusively, T1WI for evaluation of lymph nodes is moderately better than T2WI and appears to have potential for quick and sufficient mapping of the lymph nodes. In addition, this normal MR image of lymph nodes could be applied to further study for the evaluation of lymphatic system in abscess and tumor bearing animal model.
Experiments are performed to study the mixed convection flow and heat transfer in an inclined parallel plates with the upper part cooled and the lower part heated uniformly. The Reynolds number ranges from $4.0{\times}10^{-3}\;to\;6.2{\times}10^{-2}$, the angle of inclination, ${\theta}$, from 0 to 45 degree from the horizontal line, and Pr of the high viscosity fluid is 909. In this paper, the PIV(Particle image velocimetry) with TLC(Thermo-sensitive liquid crystal) tracers is used for visualizing and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature field at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. This paper describes the methods, and presents the quantitative visualization of mixed convection. From this study, it is found that the flow pattern can be classified into three patterns which are affected by Reynolds number and the angle of inclination.
Experiment and numerical calculation have been peformed to investigate mixed convection heat transfer between inclined parallel plates. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualizing and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method. The results are presented for the Reynolds number ranges from 0.004 to 0.062, the angle of inclination, ${\Theta}$, from 0 to 45 degree and Prandtl number of the high viscosity fluid is 909. The results show velocity, temperature and mean Nusselt numbers distributions. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection between inclined parallel plates is shown at $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\Theta}<30^{\circ}$, Re<0.062, and the flow pattern can be classified into three patterns which depend on Reynolds number and the angle of inclination. The minimum Nusselt numbers occur at Re=0.05 regardless of the angle of inclination.
