Display station anthropometrics: Preferred height and angle settings of CRT and keyboard

  • This study investigates display station physical adjustments preferred by a sample of visual display terminal operators. Participants in the study were selected to assure representation of extremely short and extremely tall persons, as well as persons of midrange physical stature. Individual operators were led through a step-by-step sequence to determine their preferred initial settings of seat height, keyboard height and slope angle, and CRT height and tilt angle. Each operator then performed a brief text input tase, after which final preferred adjustments were measured. Intermeasure correlation strongly suggest that "flat" (low slope angle) keyboards are in appropriate for short operators who select low seat heights. In addition, the keyboard angle adjustments preferred by most operators substantially exceed a current German ergonomic display station requirement.

  • Background: The Purpose of this study was investigated the effects of the Self Sling Suspension on the numbness, radiated pain, visual analogue scale (VAS), Cobb's angle, Jochumsen's depth, neck disabliity index (NDI). Methods: This study was carried out with a 4 forward head posture (FHP) & 4 herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) survivors. Outcomes such as the Numbness, Radiated Pain, VAS, Cobb's angle, Jochumsen's depth and NDI were measured pre- and post-intervention for both groups. Results: 2 HNP decrease was found numbness & radiated pain. After the intervention, was decreased VAS, NDI and was increased Cobb's angle, Jochumsen's depth. Conclusions: Applying Self Sling Suspension treatment to FHP & HNP patients proved to have a positive effect.

A Study of the spatial perception by audio-visual information (시각과 청각에 의한 공간적 지각에 관한 연구)

  • Psychophysical experiment was performed to investigate how audio-visual spatial disparity affects on perceptual space in peripheral vision. In the experiment, participants were exposed to two stimuli of vision and sound which comes simultaneously from different directions, respectively. The visual stimulus was implemented by 7 white LEDs which were located at an equal distance with 7 different angles of $-70^{\circ}$, $-40^{\circ}$, $-20^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, and $70^{\circ}$ from the right front. Those audial stimuli were also implemented by loudspeakers which were placed at 9 different directions equally spaced by $5^{\circ}$ ranged from $-20^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$. Each participant then evaluated spatial disparity between visual and audial stimuli with 5 levels of response, in which the higher level indicates the larger gap. When the visual stimulus is applied from the right, the results show that the response level gets higher for a larger angle between visual and auditory stimuli. A similar tendency for the visual stimulus with $0^{\circ}$ orientation was also be observed. On the other hand, when the visual stimulus is applied from the left, the response level gets lower for the larger angle.

  • A visual prosthesis for the blind based upon electrical stimulation of the visual cortex requires the development of an array of electrodes. To establish design specifications for such an electrode array, we have conducted psychophysical experiments with normally sighted subjects wearing a portable 'phosphene' simulator. The simulator consists of a small video camera, a monitor masked by an opaque perforated film, and optical lenses. The visual angle subtended by the masked monitor is $1.7^{\circ}$ or less. We measured visual acuity and reading rate as a function of the number of pixels and their spacing. Our results indicate that a phosphene image produced by 600 electrodes implanted in a $1\;cm^2$, area near the foveal projection on the visual cortex should provide a limited but useful visual sense for the profoundly blind.

Boundary Contraction for Wide-Angle Images on Monitor Screen: An Effect of Retention Interval (파지기간에 따른 모니터 화면상 광각이미지의 경계축소현상)

  • Two experiments examined the visual memory distortion by presenting 170 subjects with wide-angle views of four scenes on monitor screen. Retention interval of 0, 1 and 48 hours tested in reproduction and recognition experiment. The results of reproduction showed that the subjects tend to magnify the foreground and background of scenes compared to the real input (scene) for all retention intervals. The viewers recognized mure wide-angle views for the same scenes at the retention interval of 1 and 48 hours. These results demonstrated boundary extension is not a robust and unidirectional phenomenon but boundary contraction can be occurred with wide-angle views. The results also suggested that boundary contraction is the product of the activation of a memory schema hypothesis: In memory the representation moves toward a prototypical view and prototypical object size.

  • Participants in the virtual environment will have an immersive and memorable perceived experience through interacting with virtual objects. Recently, commercial virtual reality technologies have released simple and cost-effective smartphone-based head-mounted displays (HMD) and high-quality wide field-of-view (FOV) HMDs. However, due to the vergence-accommodation conflict structure of HMD and the learned cognition mechanism in real, side effects such as dizziness and nausea remain challenging to overcome. This study focuses on consistent size perception among various cognitive difference factors, which are essential for interaction with virtual objects. We verified whether the visual angle, which affects the size perception of an object in real, is also the main factor in the virtual environment. Our experiments derived the relation between the visual angle and the environmental components, shadow, and grid, which help perceive a virtual object. As a result of the regression analysis, we presented that in the small FOV HMD environment, the visual angle affects size perception, and the relation between the shadow and the grid is statistically significant.

  • This paper proposes an optimal three-dimensional coordinate implementation of the vision sensor using two CCD cameras. The PBVS (Position based visual servoing) is implemented using the positional information obtained from images. Stereo vision by PBVS method that has enhanced every frame using calibration parameters is effective in the distance calculation. The IBVS (Image based visual servoing) is also implemented using the difference between reference and obtained images. Stereo vision by IBVS method calculates the distance using rotation angle of motors that correspond eyes and neck without enhanced images. The PBVS method is compared with the IBVS method in terms of advantages, disadvantages, computing time, and performances. Finally, the IBVS method is applied for the dual arm manipulator on the mobile inverted pendulum. The autonomous mobile inverted pendulum is successfully demonstrated using the center of the manipulator's mass.

  • This study is purposed to find the transition of the perspective connected with visual modality. The perspective based on Greek optics and euclidean geometry and rediscovered in Renaissance represents the object according to the particular moment and the point of view, is a principal fact which affect architecture, the form of a city and the spatial organization and symbolizes an ideal of the times. It embodied perception which treats the space rationally on the basis of realism and became visual modality based on the separation of the seeing subject and the world of the object. The point of view became one with the vanishing point which made up the shape and after Renaissance for four hundred years a straight line, a right angle and a circle got to be favorite geometrical choices in architecture. A fixed point of view of the subject is getting to change and break up fundamentally by the new visual technologies of the modem times.

  • Driving simulations were performed to evaluate the effect of providing both visual information and body sensory information on changes in steering characteristics and the amount of perspiration in drift cornering. When the driver is provided with body sensory information and visual information, the amount of perspiration increases and the driver can perform drift control with a moderate level of tension. With visual information only, the driver tends to easily go into a spin because drift control is difficult. In this case, the amount of perspiration increases greatly as compared with the case where body sensory information is also provided, reflecting a very high perception of risk. When body sensory information is provided, the driver can control drift adequately, feeding back the roll angle information in steering. The importance of the driver's perception of the state of the vehicle was thus confirmed, and a desirable future direction for driver assistance systems was determined.

  • We conducted visual perception experiments to determine the perception limits of motion blur based on human visual system at LCD TV's moving pictures. The motion blur can be expressed Blurred Edge Width (BEW). The results showed that the BEW of moving pictures should be below 3.4pixels (visual angle 4.2') at 3H distance in a living room environment.
