In this paper, a novel ultraviolet sensor is presented based on a photoluminescent porous silicon. Porous silicon layer was formed by chemical etching of surface of pn junction in a $HF(48%)-HNO_3(60%)-H_20$ solution. Incident ultraviolet(UV) light is converted to visible light by photoluminescent porous silicon layer, and then this visible light generates electron-hole pairs in the pn junction, which produces a photocurrent flow through the device. In order to maximize detection efficiency, the peak sensitivity wavelength of the pn junction diode was matched with the peak wavelength of Photoluminescence from porous silicon layer. The porous silicon ultraviolet sensor showed a large output current as UV intensity increases and but very low sensitivity to visible light. The detection sensitivity of porous silicon sensor was calculated as 2.91mA/mW. These results are expected to open up a possibility that the present porous silicon sensor can be used for detecting UV light in a visible background, compared to silicon UV detectors which have an undesirable response to visible light.

Visible light communication (VLC) is a rapidly growing area of research and applications, due to the potential and predicted high efficiency of bandwidth. One of the key challenges in VLC technology is the choice of devices which are going to be deployed VLC features. Smartphone rationally uses the most widely deployed visible light sensor i.e. image sensor in camera, which could be used to receive the intensity modulated data. Image sensor based VLC system would be the most deployable scenario but initially the capacity was not much attractive compared with photodetector based VLC system. Here, the spatial multiplexing is proposed in MIMO based VLC system to increase the system capacity by utilizing the property of spatial separation of optical light sources in smartphone's camera module. The active pixels of imaging plane act as the multiple receivers which could be able to use on MIMO spatial multiplexing to enhance the system performance.
We introduce a new visible light communication (VLC) method in which three-level return-to-zero (RZ) modulation is used for flicker-free transmission. In the VLC transmitter, the three-level RZ modulation ensures that the average optical power is constant; thus, a flicker-free light-emitting diode (LED) light is achieved. In the VLC receiver, a resistor-capacitor high-pass filter is used for generating spike signals, which are used for data recovery while eliminating the 120 Hz optical noise from adjacent lighting lamps. In transmission experiments, we applied this method for wireless transmission of an air quality sensor message using the visible light of an LED array. This configuration is useful for the construction of indoor wireless sensor networks for air pollution monitoring using LED lights.

We report an experimental demonstration of $4{\times}4$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless visible light communications (VLC) using a charge-coupled device image sensor receiver instead of a photodiode receiver. An image sensor is a kind of digital camera, which is used in most mobile devices such as smart phones or laptop computers and a promising commercial candidate for a VLC receiver. The transmission distance of the experimental result is over 10 m, enough for most indoor communication applications. We expect that the MIMO VLC technique based on image sensor receivers can be widely used with the development of high-speed image sensors.

Localization is one of the key issues of demandable applications, especially smart services. Beside the traditional GPS based localization technique, the localization issue by visible light communications is promising market because of possibility of combining visible light communications with positioning technique for a high accurate, especially indoor localization service. This paper provides the overview and new image sensor scheme for localization issue based on visible light communication. The survey is introduced from core techniques to enhancement issues of localization. We hope these will be the essential references for the impact selection method in implementation and standardization issues.
In this paper, we introduce a new method to reduce the inter-channel crosstalk in visible light communication (VLC) systems using the synchronizing pulses transmitted through the power lines. Synchronizing pulses are simultaneously transmitted to multiple VLC transmitters and receivers through the 220V power line. Each VLC transmitter modulates an LED and each VLC receiver demodulates the signal light in the time slot that is allocated with reference to the synchronizing pulses. This method is very simple and effective to prevent the inter-channel crosstalk in VLC systems for sensor networks because every VLC system can easily get the synchronizing pulses from the nearby power line.
In this paper, we introduce an edge-spike modulation method for visible light communication (VLC). This method is effective in preventing LED flicker and 120 Hz noise interference in base-band VLC. In the VLC transmitter, edge-spikes are generated by passing the digital data through a simple RC-high pass filter (HPF). The LED modulation of the edge-spikes does not change the average power of the LED light; thus it prevents LED flicker. In the VLC receiver, the 120 Hz noise from other lighting lamps is easily eliminated by RC-HPF, while the edge-spike signal is detected normally. In our experiment, the message of an air-quality sensor was successfully transmitted using edge-spike modulation. This structure is useful in constructing, e.g., wireless gas monitoring sensor systems to warn and prevent harmful gas leakage accidents in buildings using LED light.

The current visible light communication (VLC) systems have a short transmission distance and a low data rate. To overcome this, we studied on the method of appling MIMO technology to VLC. However, it is difficult to apply the original MIMO technology used in RF frequency to wireless VLC. In VLC system, a lens can be used to separate the transmitted signals. And, if we use an image sensor as the receiver, MIMO technology can be applied to LED wireless visible light communication. In this paper, we report an experiment of $2{\times}2$ LED wireless visible light communication using a commercial image sensor receiver. We show the experimental demonstration with a transmission length of 10.5 m and a data rate of 200 bit/s.
To solve the problem of parameter optimization in image sensor-based visible light positioning systems, theoretical limits for both the location and the azimuth angle of the image sensor receiver (ISR) are calculated. In the case of a typical indoor scenario, maximum likelihood estimations for both the location and the azimuth angle of the ISR are first deduced. The Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) is then derived, under the condition that the observation values of the image points are affected by white Gaussian noise. For typical parameters of LEDs and image sensors, simulation results show that accurate estimates for both the location and azimuth angle can be achieved, with positioning errors usually on the order of centimeters and azimuth angle errors being less than $1^{\circ}$. The estimation accuracy depends on the focal length of the lens and on the pixel size and frame rate of the ISR, as well as on the number of transmitters used.
