  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of design parameters on the friction loss in piston skirt. An analytical model to describe the friction characteristics of piston skirt has been presented, which is based on the secondary motion of piston and mixed lubrication theory, It could be shown that the skirt friction closely depends on the side force acted on the piston pin. The side force is inf1uenced by cylinder pressure at low engine speed, but by inertia force at high engine speed. The usage of extensive skirt area and low weight piston is effective to reduce the friction loss at high speed. The low viscosity oil considerably decreases viscous friction as engine speed increases, but it increases boundary friction at low engine speed. From the parametric study, it is found that the skirt axial profile is the most important design parameter related to the reduction of skirt friction.

  • The effects of improved rice bran oil on the characteristics of exhaust emissions have been experimentally examined by a single cylinder, four cycle, direct injection, water-cooled and agricultural diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. The experiments are conducted with light oil rice bran oil, and improved rice bran oil as a fuel. The fuel injection timing is fixed to 22$^{\circ}$BTDC regardless of fuel type, engine loads and speeds. To reduce the viscosity of rice bran oil, it is used with the methods of heating, methyl ester and ultrasonic system in a highly viscous rice bran oil. In this study, it is found that the brake specific fuel consumption rate of light oil is the lowest and that of improved rice bran oil is lower than that of pure rice bran oil, and NOx emissions of light oil are the lowest and those of pure rice bran oil are the highest, but soot emissions of light oil are the highest. However these results are not amply satisfied with the emissions regulation limit using the pure and improved rice bran oil as a fuel in diesel engines.

  • Convective heat transfer in a channel filled with porous media has been analyzed in this paper. The two-equation model is applied for the heat transfer analysis with the velocity profile, considering both the inertia and viscous effects. Based on a theoretical solution, the effect of the velocity profile on the convective heat transfer is investigated in detail. The Nusselt number is obtained in terms of the relevant physical parameters, such as the Biot number for the internal heat exchange, the ratio of effective conductivities between the fluid and solid phases, and hydraulic boundary layer thickness. The results indicate that the influence of the velocity profile is characterized within two regimes according to the two parameters, the Biot number and the conductivity ratio between the phases. The decrease in the heat transfer due to the hydraulic boundary layer thickness is 15% at most within a practical range of the pertinent parameters.

  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • Nozzle flow analyses of $30\;ton_f$-class KARI liquid rocket engine for high altitude propulsion are carried out using a chemically frozen and equilibrium flow analysis code developed previously. It is considered that the combined frozen- and shifting- equilibrium analysis is cost-effective regarding the convergence characteristics and modeling uncertainties, though the non-equilibrium analysis is most reliable approach. A dependable performance prediction could be attainable through the present analyses that account for the recombination process and thermal and kinetic energy recovery during the expansion process with viscous effects.

  • A study has been made to investigate the boundary sliding and its accommodation mode with respect to the variation of $\alpha$$_2$/$eta$ volume fraction during superplastic deformation of two-phase Ti$_3$Al-xNb intermetallics. Step strain rate and load relaxation tests have been performed at 950, 970 and 99$0^{\circ}C$ to obtain the flow stress curves and to analyze the deformation characteristics by the theory of inelastic deformation. The results show that the grain matrix deformation and boundary sliding of the three intermetallics containing 21, 50 and 77% in $eta$ volume fractions are well described by the plastic deformation and viscous flow equations. Due to the equal accommodation of both $a^2$ and $\beta$ phases, the accommodation modes for fine-grained materials are in good agreement with the iso-strain rate models. The sliding resistance analyzed for the different boundaries is the lowest in the $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$ boundary, and increases in the order of $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$<< $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ = $\beta$/$\beta$, which plays an important role in controlling the superplasticity of the alloys with the various $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ phase ratio.

  • In this paper, a hybrid element method(HEM) for the evaluation of the hydrodynamic responses of arbitrary-shaped offshore structures is studied. The hydrodynamic pressure forces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. The mathematical formulation procedure of the hybrid element method with the analytical eigenseries solution is established systematically. The computer program based on the HEM has been developed, and applied to solving the wave diffraction and radiation problems for arbitrary shaped structures. From comparisons of the results obtained by using the other avaliable solution methods, the method for the evaluation of the hydrodynamic forces using the HEM and the computer program developed here have been proved to be valid.

  • [ $\pi$ ]The effects of silica-based additives have been investigated to improve the creep property of a $UO_2$ pellet. The additive composition, $50wt\%SiO_2-47wt{\%}CaO-3wt\%Cr_2O_3$ (SCC), was selected according to the dihedral angle and the distribution of the second phase. It was observed that the creep rate of the $0.07 wt\%$ SCC-added $UO_2$ was slower than that of the pure $UO_2$. However, the creep rate of the $0.22 wt\%$ SCC-added $UO_2$ was about 3_48 times faster than that of the pure $UO_2$, depending on the applied stress in the lower stress range. In the case of the $0.35 wt\%$ SCC-added $UO_2$, the creep rate decreased in comparison with that of the $0.22 wt\%$ SCC-added $UO_2$. The observed enhancement in the creep rate might depend on a balance between the positive role of the viscous intergranular phase and the negative roles of the additives and the grain growth.

  • We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) wing with an endplate in the vicinity of the free surface by solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model. The endplate causes a blockage effect on the flow, and an additional viscous effect especially near the endplate. These combined effects of the endplate significantly reduce the magnitudes of the velocities under the lower surface of the wing, thereby enhancing aerodynamic performance in terms of the force coefficients. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio of a wing with an endplate is increased 46% compared to that of wing without an endplate at the lowest clearance. The tip vortex of a wing-with-endplate (WWE) moved laterally to a greater extent than that of a wing-without-endplate (WOE). This causes a decrease in the induced drag, resulting in a reduction in the total drag.
