바이오디젤 생산에 미치는 원료 특성의 영향 (Effects of Properties of Raw Materials on Biodiesel Production)

  • Biodiesel is an alternative and renewable energy source, which is hoped to reduce global dependence on petroleum and environmental problem. Biodiesel produced from a variety of oil sources such as vegetable oil, animal fat and waste oils, and has properties similar to those associated with petro-diesel, including cetane number, volumetric heating value, flash point, viscosity and so on. In this study, we investigate the effect of quality of raw materials on alkali-catalyzed transesterification for producing of biodiesel. The increase of content of free fatty acid and water in oil were caused the sharp decrease of conversion yield. Also, the low purity of methanol in reactant was inhibited the reaction rate. In the case of addition of sodium sulfate as absorbent to prepare catalyst solution, the content of fatty acid methyl ester in product was increased more about 1.6% than that of control. However, the addition of zeolite, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate as absorbent in reactant to remove water generated from reaction did not show any enhancement in the reaction yield. This result may provide useful information with regard to the choice and preparation of raw materials for more economic and efficient biodiesel production.

  • In order to investigate the spray characteristics according to diesel and bioethanol blending with biodiesel fuel, macroscopic spray characteristics were analyzed from the comparison of the effect of the injection pressure, ambient pressure and density on the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle. In addition, spray atomization characteristics were studied with local and overall Sauter mean diameter (SMD) and the contour map of SMD distribution at various injection conditions. It was revealed that the spray tip penetration of biodiesel fuels blended with diesel and ethanol was shorter than that of an undiluted biodiesel fuel at low injection pressure. However, the difference of spray tip penetration among three test fuels reduces at a high injection pressure. Increase of the ambient gas density leads to the decrease of the spray tip penetration of three test fuels. When diesel and ethanol fuels add to an undiluted biodiesel fuel, spray cone angle increases due to the decrease of the fuel density at the same ambient pressure condition. On the other hand, the droplet mean diameter decreases due to the reduction of the kinematic viscosity and surface tension.

오리기름으로부터 합성된 바이오디젤의 연료특성 연구 (Study of Fuel Properties for Biodiesel Derived from Duck's Oil)

  • 바이오디젤은 기존석유디젤을 대체할 수 있는 친환경적인 연료로 알려져 있다. 하지만 원료물질이 대부분 가격이 높은 식량자원을 이용한다는 단점을 지니고 있다. 본 연구에서는 음식쓰레기로 생긴 오리기름을 전처리 한 후, 염기촉매를 이용하여 전이에스테르화 반응을 통해 바이오디젤을 합성하였다. 합성되어진 바이오디젤의 대표적 연료특성으로 밀도, 동점도, 저온특성, 윤활성, 세탄가를 분석한 결과, 국내에서 동절기 외에는 충분히 석유대체연료로 사용 가능하다는 결과를 얻었다.

  • Biodiesel (BD) was made from animal-fats reacting with methanol and potassium hydroxide in the laboratory. The biodiesel made in the laboratory was sent to K-petro, the government agency, to inspect the quality of animal-fats biodiesel, of which generally the quality was acceptable for heating oil for agricultural hot air heater. Kinematic viscosity and calorific values of the biodiesels were measured. BD20(K), kerosene based biodiesel, showed 18cSt at $-20^{\circ}C$. It seems that BD100 can not be suitable for heating fuel under some temperature. As BD content increased calorific value decreased, up to 40,000J/g for 100% BD, while light oil calorific value was 45,567J/g, showing difference of 5,567J/g, about 12% difference. Several different fuels, BD20, BD50, BD100 and light oil, were prepared and tested for fuel combustion qualities for agricultural hot air heater and their combustion performances were compared and analyzed. Flame dimensions of biodiesels and light oil were almost same shape at the same combustion condition in the burner of the hot air heater. Generally $CO_2$ amounts of BDs are greater than light oil. But,the differences are so small that it is hard to tell there was significant difference existed between the BDs combustion and light oil.

  • 바이오디젤은 식물성유지, 동물성유지 그리고 폐식용유를 전이에스테르화 반응을 시켜 만들어진 것으로 경유를 대체할 수 있는 연료이다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 원료의 식물성유지 (대두유, 폐식용유, 유채유, 면실유, 팜유)로부터 얻어진 바이오디젤의 연료 특성을 알아보았다. 다양한 식물성유지 원료로부터 얻어진 바이오디젤은 지방산메틸에스테르 함량, 동점도, 인화점, 필터막힘점, 글리세린 함량을 분석하였다. 바이오디젤의 품질기준과 시험방법은 한국 표준과 유럽 표준인 EN14214에 따라 시험하였다. 대두유, 폐식용유, 유채유, 면실유 바이오디젤은 불포화지방산이 많이 포함되어 있는 반면에 팜유 바이오디젤은 포화지방산이 많이 함유되어 있다. 저온특성, 동점도, 산화안정도와 같은 바이오디젤의 연료 특성은 지방산메틸에스테르의 구성 성분과 관련이 깊다.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze the macroscopic behavior of spray and injection characteristics on the DME blended biodiesel at different mixing ratios by using spray visualization and injection rate measurement system. The spray images were analyzed to a spray tip penetration, a spray cone angle and a spray area distribution at various mixing ratio of DME by weight. The influence of different injection pressure and ambient pressure on the fuel spray characteristics are investigated for the various injection parameters. In order to analyze the injection characteristics of test fuels, the fuel injection rate is measured at various blending ratio. The variation of viscosity of the blended fuel by the mixing of DME fuel shows the improved effect of spray developments. Also, it was found that the injection quantities of high blended ratio were larger than that of lower blended fuel. Also, higher blending fuel showed a faster evaporation than that of mixing ratio of test fuel because kinetic viscosity was changed by blending ratio.

Multi-cavity Piston에 의한 바이오디젤유의 연소성 향상에 관한 연구 (The Study for Improving the Combustion of Biodiesel Fuel using Multi-cavity Piston)

  • American NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) reported that BD20 could reduce PM, CO, SOx and cancerogenic matters by 13.6%, 9.3%, 17.6% and 13% respectively, compared to diesel fuel. BD20 has been being tested on garbage trucks and official vehicles at Seoul City, which is positive on air environment, but negative on combustion by higher viscosity in winter season. This study investigated the combustion characteristics by employing multi cavity piston for improving the deterioration of combustibility caused by the higher viscosity of the biodiesel fuel such as BD20 with the combustion flames taken by a high speed camera and the cylinder pressure diagram. A 4-cycle single cylinder diesel engine was remodeled to a visible 2-cycle engine for taking the flame photographs, which has a common-rail injection system. The test was done at laboratory temperature of about $4{\sim}5^{\circ}C$.

Fuel Qualities and Combustion Characteristics of Animal-Fats Biodiesel for Agricultural Hot Air Heaters

As BD content increased, the calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100, while the calorific value of light oil was 45,567 J/g showing difference of 5,567 J/g, about 12% difference. Several different fuels including BD20 (biodiesel 20% + light oil 80%), BD50 (biodiesel 50% + light oil 50%), BD100 (biodiesel 100%), and light oil were tested for fuel combustion qualities for agricultural hot air heater, and their combustion performances were compared and analyzed. Flame dimensions of biodiesels and light oils were almost the same shape at the same combustion condition. Generally, the $CO_2$ amounts of BDs were greater than light oil. However, in this study the differences were minor, so there was no significant difference existed between the BDs combustion and light oil. Conclusions: It seemed that quality was good for heating oil for agricultural hot air heater because of showing no barriers for continuous combustion and proper exhaust gas temperature and $CO_2$ amount discharged. But, for fuel fluidity for higher BD content fuel could be a detrimental problem in situations where the outdoor temperature is lowered. As BD content increased, calorific value decreased up to 40,000 J/g for BD100. Calorific value difference between BD20 and light oil was about 1,360 J/g.

알칼리 촉매에 의한 우지(Beef Tallow)와 그 혼합지방의 Biodiesel화 (Conversion of Beef Tallow and Its Mixed Fat into Biodiesel by Alkali Catalysts)

  • The transesterifications of beef tallow and the mixture of beef tallow and rapeseed oil were conducted at $65^{\circ}C$ respectively using TMAH, NaOH and their mixed catalysts. The reactants were emulsified with 1vol% emulsifier and propylene glycol. The overall conversion of beef tallow was 95% at such optimum conditions as the 1:8 of molar ratio and 0.8 wt% TMAH. The overall conversion of mixed fat at the 1:8 of molar ratio and mixed catalyst of 70 wt% TMAH 30 wt% NaOH was close to 97% which appeared at 0.8 wt% TMAH in 80min. And the kinematic viscosity of biodiesel mixture using the mixed catalyst was $6.5mm^2/s$ at $40^{\circ}C$.

  • 화석연료의 고갈과 원유가격 폭등으로 인해 이를 대체할 수 있는 다양한 연료의 개발이 이루어지고 있다. 동물성 지방이나 식물성 기름의 주성분인 트리글리세라이드를 메탄올과 반응시켜 생산된 바이오디젤은 기존의 석유디젤을 대체할 수 있는 친환경적인 연료로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내에서 유통중인 경유에 6종류의 원료별 바이오디젤을 일정 비율로 혼합한 뒤, 다양한 연료특성을 분석하였다. 바이오디젤의 농도가 높아질수록 밀도, 동점도, 인화점이 상승하였고, 저온특성은 악화되는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 경유의 중요한 연료특성인 세탄가를 IQT를 이용해 측정한 결과, 바이오디젤의 혼합비율이 높아질수록, 유도세탄가가 높게 측정되었으며, 특히 팜유로부터 생산된 바이오디젤의 경우, 71.26의 높은 유도세탄가가 측정되었다.
