  • Nature of Science(NOS) has been a well-organized focus of science education and one of the key elements in defining and cultivating scientific literacy for more than a century. In recent years, a specific description of NOS, which is often known as 'the consensus view of NOS', has become very influential and has gained ready acceptance as an arrangement for both curriculum building and research into understanding of NOS by students and teachers in many countries around the world. This study has two purposes; one is to review some debates and criticism on the consensus view of NOS which consists of a list of sentences to describe nature of refined and general science, which have been heated up for the last few years by many prominent science education researchers, and the other is to consider alternative perspectives on NOS for the purpose of a new direction of NOS education. As a result of an investigation into such views as 'Teaching about NOS', 'Critical NOS', 'Critical Thinking-NOS', 'Whole Science', 'Features of Science' and 'Reconceptualized Family Resemblance Approach to NOS', some implications which focus on the generality and plurality of content knowledge of NOS based on current philosophy of science and sociology of scientific knowledge are suggested for the improvement of teaching and learning NOS.

  • Lipid oxidation is one of the most important non-microbial causes of meat quality deterioration. However, there have been different/conflicting views concerning the primary catalysts of lipid oxidation in meat. This presentation provides brief overviews of lipid oxidation mechanism in general and catalysis of lipid oxidation in meat, and then focuses on inter-species differences in lipid oxidation potential, using results from our studies on meats (beef, pork and chicken) at retail and the respective meats of uniform postmortem history. The inter-species differences have highlighted the relative roles of meat pigment (myoglobin) content, catalase activity, and the concentration of oxidation substrates (particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids) in determining the lipid oxidation potential of raw meat versus cooked meat.

  • In multiview imaging systems, color correction is adopted to eliminate color inconsistency between views. However, the influence of highlights on color correction has not been considered before. In this letter, a new color correction method based on highlight detection is proposed. The method is designed to treat highlight and highlight-removal regions independently when calculating correction parameters. Finial correction is implemented with a fusion mechanism. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve objective and subjective correction performance, while achieving better coding performance than other correction methods.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the source, length, number of views, and content of the most widely viewed Zika virus (ZIKV)-related YouTube videos. We hypothesized that ZIKV-related videos uploaded by different sources contained different content. Methods: The 100 most viewed English ZIKV-related videos were manually coded and analyzed statistically. Results: Among the 100 videos, there were 43 consumer-generated videos, 38 Internet-based news videos, 15 TV-based news videos, and 4 professional videos. Internet news sources captured over two-thirds of the total of 8 894 505 views. Compared with consumer-generated videos, Internet-based news videos were more likely to mention the impact of ZIKV on babies (odds ratio [OR], 6.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.64 to 23.76), the number of cases in Latin America (OR, 5.63; 95% CI, 1.47 to 21.52); and ZIKV in Africa (OR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.04 to 6.31). Compared with consumer-generated videos, TV-based news videos were more likely to express anxiety or fear of catching ZIKV (OR, 6.67; 95% CI, 1.36 to 32.70); to highlight fear of ZIKV among members of the public (OR, 7.45; 95% CI, 1.20 to 46.16); and to discuss avoiding pregnancy (OR, 3.88; 95% CI, 1.13 to 13.25). Conclusions: Public health agencies should establish a larger presence on YouTube to reach more people with evidence-based information about ZIKV.

  • As men's interest in grooming increases, YouTube videos teaching men about natural makeup that could help them look more presentable are becoming popular. An increasing amount of beauty content on YouTube now targets men. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the features of male-targeted beauty videos with the highest number of views and likes in order to help beauty influencers understand what subscribers want and apply effective marketing strategies. The research method set criteria for YouTuber characteristics, editing elements, and content through prior research, and analyzed through the YouTube website. The video upload date range was set from January 1, 2022 to January 1, 2024. The search keywords "male beauty YouTuber" and "male makeup" were used to find the 10 most viewed videos. The results showed that technical terms, standard words, and loanwords were generally used, and the age group was in their 30s, and the proportion of famous experts was high. The video duration of 10-15 minutes was most common, and the ratio of sound effects, background music, and subtitles was high. Makeup tips and product reviews or recommendations was the most common type of content. Especially, demonstrations of make-up application and product reviews had higher number of views. The findings of this study could provide new ideas and references to YouTubers who aspire to specialize in male beauty content, and help them produce videos that sufficiently satisfy the needs and desires of subscribers.

  • This study aimed to investigate primary students' science-related attitudes through the literature review. Ninety-four papers published in domestic science education journals, since 1990, were collected and were followed by content analysis. In this study, science-related attitude was conceptualized as attitude toward science, scientist, science-related occupations, and school science, which is composed of cognitive, affective and behavioral domains. Based on the conceptualization, the instruments used for measuring students' attitudes were analyzed. The analysis of definition of science-related attitude in the articles showed different foci on cognitive, affective and behavioral domains. To suggest the effective instruction for enhancing students' science-related attitudes, this study identified students' attitude with gender, grade, residence and achievement level. The result showed that male, urban, higher-grade and better performed students had more positive attitude than female, rural, lower-grade and less performed students. As for the factors in science-related attitude, I categorized the factors into personal, environmental and pedagogical aspects, and found that psychological elements in all domains were most influential to students' change of science-related attitudes. It is interesting to note that students showed dichotomous views about experiment and that task-oriented instruction failed to enhance students' attitude. Based on the research findings, this study suggests effective instruction for improving students' attitudes and future research for science education.

  • Recent literature in science education has emphasized nature of science in science teaching. The theme has been considered to be an important element for scientific literacy. The purpose of this study was to identify Korean science teachers' points of view on topics related to nature of science, such as definition of science, characteristics of scientific hypotheses, scientific theories and scientific laws, and their construction, scientists, and scientific methods. The relevant 13 items were selected from Views on Science-Technology-Society (VOSTS) by the authors for this study. Most teachers perceived science as an exploratory process or problem solving. Some perceived science as an application of knowledge to make this world a better place to live in. Teachers viewed scientific activities as scholastic and individualistic instead of pragmatic or collective. They did not hold clear understandings of the idea that scientific knowledge is subject to change. As identified in previous studies, teachers thought that scientific ideas develop from hypothesis to theories, and finally to scientific laws. They did not show sound understanding of inventiveness of scientific hypotheses and theories, nor discovery of scientific laws. In summary, teachers' major points of view reflected 'realism'. It suggested that they needed to understand nature of science in the ways which it has been described in recent literature of science education, in order to teach science with personal and social contexts.

  • This paper presents a case study of the student's culture as a component of conceptual ecology that affects discussions and discourses in the science classroom. The present study was conducted using a naturalistic approach, mainly through observing a science class of a middle school in Seoul, Korea, and through semistructured interviews. The case showed that the science classroom culture can be identified in four aspects: (1) knowledge; (2) the teacher; (3) classmates; and (4) self. These cultural aspects were strongly related to each other and functioned as constraints in discussions and discourses of the science classroom. For successful discussions and discourses, it is necessary to consider students' cultural aspects: epistemological views on knowledge, the teacher-student and student-student relationships, and the role of self in the discussions and discourses.
