In this paper, we propose an efficient and adaptive rate control in Frame-layer for H.264/AVC. For given QP, bits according to video characteristics, and current frame is close correlation between the adjacent frames. Using the statistical characteristic, we obtain change of occurrence bit about QP to apply the bit amount by QP from the video characteristic and applied in the estimated bit amount of the each unit of current frame. In addition, we use weight with QP and occurrence bit amount that is statistical information of encoded previous frames. Simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme could not only achieves time saving of more than 99% over existing rate control algorithm, but also increase the average PSNR of reconstructed video for around 0.02~0.43 dB in all the sequences.

This paper presents a polyphase down sampling based multiple description coding applied to H.264 video coding standard. For a given macroblock, a residual macroblock is calculated by motion estimation, and before applying DCT, quantization and entrophy coding of the H.264 coding process, the polyphase down sampling is applied to the residual macroblock to code in four separate descriptions. Experiments were performed for all the 9 test sequences of JVT SVC standardization in various packet loss patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed one gives 0.5 to 5 dB enhancement over an error-concealment based on the slice group map technolgoy.

Fall event detection is one of the most common problems for elderly people, especially those living alone because falls result in serious injuries such as joint dislocations, fractures, severe head injuries or even death. In order to prevent falls or fall-related injuries, several previous methods based on video sensor showed low fall detection rates in recent years. To improve this problem and outperform the system performance, this paper presented a novel approach for fall event detection in the elderly using a subtraction between successive difference images and temporal templates in real time environment. The proposed algorithm obtained the successful detection rate of 96.43% and the low false positive rate of 3.125% even though the low-quality video sequences are obtained by a USB PC camera sensor. The experimental results have shown very promising performance in terms of high detection rate and low false positive rate.
Recently, as the necessity of a light-weighted video encoding technique has been rising for applications such as UCC(User Created Contents) or Multiview Video, Distributed Video Coding(DVC) where a decoder, not an encoder, performs the motion estimation/compensation taking most of computational complexity has been vigorously investigated. Wyner-Ziv coding reconstructs an image by eliminating the noise on side information which is decoder-side prediction of original image using channel code. Generally the side information of Wyner-Ziv coding is generated by using frame interpolation between key frames. The channel code such as Turbo code or LDPC code which shows a performance close to the Shannon's limit is employed. The noise model of Wyner-Ziv coding for channel decoding is called Virtual Channel Noise and is generally modeled by Laplacian or Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we propose a Wyner-Ziv coding method based on the frequency-adaptive channel noise modeling in transform domain. The experimental results with various sequences prove that the proposed method makes the channel noise model more accurate compared to the conventional scheme, resulting in improvement of the rate-distortion performance by up to 0.52dB.
Intra mode decision is a useful coding tool in Distributed Video Coding (DVC) for improving DVC coding efficiency for video sequences having fast motion. A major limitation associated with the existing intra mode decision methods, however, is that its efficiency highly depends on user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. This paper proposes an entropy-based method to address this problem. The probabilities of intra and Wyner?Ziv (WZ) modes are determined firstly by examining correlation of pixels in spatial and temporal directions. Based on these probabilities, entropy of the intra and the WZ modes are computed. A comparison based on the entropy values decides a coding mode between intra coding and WZ coding without relying on any user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. Experimental results show its superior rate-distortion performance of improvements of PSNR up to 2 dB against a conventional Wyner?Ziv coding without intra mode decision. Furthermore, since the proposed method does not require any thresholds or modeling parameters from users, it is very attractive for real life applications.
This paper detected the characteristics of motion vector to support efficient content -based video search of video. Traditionally, the present frame of a video was divided into blocks of equal size and BMA (block matching algorithm) was used, which predicts the motion of each block in the reference frame on the time axis. However, BMA has several restrictions and vectors obtained by BMA are sometimes different from actual motions. To solve this problem, the foil search method was applied but this method is disadvantageous in that it has to make a large volume of calculation. Thus, as an alternative, the present study extracted the Spatio-Temporal characteristics of Motion Vector Spatio-Temporal Correlations (MVSTC). As a result, we could predict motion vectors more accurately using the motion vectors of neighboring blocks. However, because there are multiple reference block vectors, such additional information should be sent to the receiving end. Thus, we need to consider how to predict the motion characteristics of each block and how to define the appropriate scope of search. Based on the proposed algorithm, we examined motion prediction techniques for motion compensation and presented results of applying the techniques.

This paper proposes a robust and computationally efficient algorithm for automatic video object segmentation. For implementing the spatio-temporal segmentation, which aims for efficient combination of the motion segmentation and the color segmentation, an SOM-based hierarchical clustering method in which the segmentation process is regarded as clustering of feature vectors is employed. As results, problems of high computational complexity which required for obtaining exact segmentation results in conventional video object segmentation methods, and the performance degradation due to noise are significantly reduced. A measure of motion vector reliability which employs MRF-based MAP estimation scheme has been introduced to minimize the influence from the motion estimation error. In addition, a noise elimination scheme based on the motion reliability histogram and a clustering validity index for automatically identifying the number of objects in the scene have been applied. A cross projection method for effective object tracking and a dynamic memory to maintain temporal coherency have been introduced as well. A set of experiments has been conducted over several video sequences to evaluate the proposed algorithm, and the efficiency in terms of computational complexity, robustness from noise, and higher segmentation accuracy of the proposed algorithm have been proved.
Terrain reconstruction from images is an ill-posed, yet commonly desired Structure from Motion task when compositing visual effects into live-action photography. These surfaces are required for choreography of a scene, casting physically accurate shadows of CG elements, and occlusions. We present a novel framework for generating the geometry of landscapes from extremely noisy point cloud datasets obtained via limited resolution techniques, particularly optical flow based vision algorithms applied to live-action video plates. Our contribution is a new statistical approach to remove erroneous tracks ('outliers') by employing a unique combination of well established techniques-including Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) for robust parameter estimation and Radial Basis Functions (REFs) for scattered data interpolation-to exploit the natural constraints of this problem. Our algorithm offsets the tremendously laborious task of modeling these landscapes by hand, automatically generating a visually consistent, camera position dependent, thin-shell surface mesh within seconds for a typical tracking shot.
In this paper, we propose a new approach for tracking a moving object in moving image sequences using active contour models and optical flow. In our approach object segmentation is achieved by active contours, and object tracking is done by motion estimation based on optical flow. To get more dynamic characteristics, Lagrangian dynamics combined to the active contour models. For the optical flow computation, a method, which is based on Spatiotempo-ral Energy Models, is employed to perform robust tracking under poor environments. A prototype real tracking system has been developed and applied to a contents-based video retrieval systems.
There are many Problems such as low detection ratio, velocity and increase of false hit ratio on the detection of gradual scene changes with the previous shot transition detection algorithms. In this paper, we Propose an improved dissolve detection method using color information on low-frequency subband and edge elements on high-frequency subband. The Possible dissolve transition are found by analyzing the edge change ratio in the high-frequency subband with edge elements of each direction. Using the double chromatic difference on the lowest frequency subband, we have the improvement of the dissolve detection ratio. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than the conventional one for dissolve detection on a diverse set of uncompressed video sequences.
