  • In vision-based interfaces for video games, gestures are used as commands of the games instead of pressing down a keyboard or a mouse. In these Interfaces, unintentional movements and continuous gestures have to be permitted to give a user more natural interface. For this problem, this paper proposes a novel gesture spotting method that combines spotting with recognition. It recognizes the meaningful movements concurrently while separating unintentional movements from a given image sequence. We applied our method to the recognition of the upper-body gestures for interfacing between a video game (Quake II) and its user. Experimental results show that the proposed method is on average $93.36\%$ in spotting gestures from continuous gestures, confirming its potential for a gesture-based interface for computer games.

  • Academia and psychiatric practice have increasingly begun to recognize the positive relationship between art and mental health well-being. Coloring and drawing, in specific, are being highlighted as being particularly effective in improving mental wellness. Video games, despite having a negative reputation for promoting antisocial behavior and violence, are now being recognized as positive for mental health as they provide relaxation benefits that help users find inner tranquility. The following study experimented on the impact of video games that incorporate coloring and drawing games on improving mental health using 3 criteria: creative and artistic freedom; interactivity; and sense of immersion. The experiment focused on 1 coloring game (Chicory: A Colorful Tale) and 1 drawing game (Draw a Stickman: EPIC). The experiment found that coloring (Chicory) reduces loneliness, stress, anxiety, and softens the heart, while drawing (Stickman) increases focus, emotional control, adds excitement to life, and improves innovations. Further research into the specific benefits and challenges associated with this emerging form of digital art therapy is however recommended.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a three dimensional balance trainer in combination with a video-game system and visual feedback on balance recovery and gait function in subacute stroke patients. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twenty-three subacute stroke patients were assigned to either an experimental (n=12) or a control group (n=11) using a random permuted block design and sealed envelopes. The experimental group received additional 3-dimensional balance training combined with visual feedback and a game program for 30 min/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. Both groups received 30-min of conservative physical therapy sessions based on neurodevelopmental therapy. Before and after the 20 sessions, walking abilities were evaluated by the the GaitRite system and balances were evaluated using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). The Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) was used to assess trunk muscle performances. Results: After the 4-week intervention, BBS and TIS scores were significantly increased in both groups (p<0.05), and increases in these scores were significantly greater in the experimental group (p<0.05). After the 4-week intervention, gait speed and cadence were significantly increased in both groups (p<0.05), and as was observed for BBS and TIS scores, changes of gait speed and cadence were significantly greater in the experimental group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The study shows that the 3-dimensional balance trainer combined with visual biofeedback and a video-game system provides a therapeutic means for improving balance and gait ability in subacute stroke patients.

  • Today, video games created via 3D softwares become a core part of the essential the video game contents field because their properties that can produce more easier than 2D games and can save budget of contents makings. It is very important that reducing polygon counts of 3D characters and environments for Gaming optimization. We can formulate elaborate 3D game models with low polygon counting in virtue of technological advancements, and these technologies continue to evolve. In 2012, Pixar made public Open subdivision which is the new technology to make high quality 3D models with low polygons and distributed that via Open source verification. This paper will compare and analyze the characteristics, and merits and demerits of these various kinds of these skills(Mesh smooth, Turbo Smooth, Open subdivision) and will inquire which method is the most efficient one to make 3D video games.

  • This study investigated the types and characteristics of arcade games that have marked the beginning of the game industry. Arcade game equipment have been largely evolved from 'mechanical arcade game equipment' to 'electro-mechanical arcade game equipment', and to 'video arcade game equipment' In these evolution processes, arcade games have had unique characteristics distinct from other game platforms. These characteristics included the properties of 'space' and 'time', 'original form of gameplay', 'simple interface' and 'performance feasibility.' The recent stagnation of arcade games was due to the fact that the characteristics of arcade games started to lose their unique characteristics since these were also spread to other platform of games.
