  • This paper presents a generation method of test streams for verifying conformance of an UHD broadcasting receiver including decoders for video and audio as well as parsers for PSIP and closed caption data. The proposed test streams for video/audio signals can evaluate conformance of HEVC, AC-3 and DTS-HD standards. Especially, test streams for HEVC video compression standard can be used for testing syntax compliance and error resilience for a HEVC decoder. Moreover, the proposed test streams for system/program and closed caption can be applied for verifying parsers for PSIP and CEA-708 standards.

  • H.264/AVC compresses video data by applying DCT transform, quantization and entropy coding processes to the residual signal obtained by inter/intra prediction. This paper proposes a method enhancing an existing DC offset adjustment technology which uses information of neighboring blocks to reduce residual information for improving coding efficiency. DC offset information is not sent over bitstreams, but calculated in the same way both in the decoder and in the encoder. Experimental results show that the proposed method enhances coding efficiency by 0.25% in average BD-Rate compared to H.264/AVC and gives better or worse coding efficiency compared to the existing DC offset method depending on video sequences with coding efficiency degradation by 0.09% in average BD-Rate. This experimental results also show that further coding efficiency improvement is possible by applying the proposed method adaptively to slice or macroblock coding units.

  • Significant computations for full search (FS) motion estimation have been a big obstacle in real-time video coding and recent MPEG-4 AVC (advanced video coding) standard requires much more computations than conventional MPEG-2 for motion estimation. To reduce an amount of computation of full search (FS) algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without any degradation of predicted images like the conventional FS. The computational reduction without any degradation in predicted image comes from fast elimination of impossible candidate motion vectors. We obtain faster elimination of inappropriate motion vectors using efficient matching units from localization of complex area in image data and dithering order based matching scan. Our algorithm reduces about $30\%$ of computations for block matching error compared with the conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) algorithm, and our algorithm will be useful in real-time video coding applications using MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-2.

  • This paper introduces a cost-effective method fur improving anchor picture quality of a multiview video coding scheme that is mainly based on chroma compensation. Proposed method is applied to both INTER $16{\times}16$ and SKIP modes in only anchor P-pictures. By testing using JVT common test conditions, simulation results show that proposed method can obtain the average BD-PSNR gains fur U and V as 0.136 dB and 0.127 dB, respectively, while maintaining almost same performance for Y (luminance). For the range of low bit-rates, it is observed that average BD-PSNR gains of Y, U, and V are 0.141 dB, 0.494 dB and 0.525 dB, respectively. Necessary computational complexity is very marginal because the number of anchor P-pictures is only 4.18% in comparison with whole coded sequences, however it can be found that the proposed method can significantly improve the coding efficiencies of color components.

  • Authentication of videos and images based on the content is becoming an important problem in information security. Unfortunately, previous studies lack the consideration of Kerckhoffs's principle in order to achieve this (i.e., a cryptosystem should be secure even if everything about the system, except the key, is public knowledge). In this paper, a solution to the problem of finding a relationship between a frame's index and its content is proposed based on the creative utilization of a robust manifold feature. The proposed solution is based on a novel semi-fragile watermarking scheme for H.264/AVC video content authentication. At first, the input I-frame is partitioned for feature extraction and watermark embedding. This is followed by the temporal feature extraction using the Isometric Mapping algorithm. The frame index is included in the feature to produce the temporal watermark. In order to improve security, the spatial watermark will be encrypted together with the temporal watermark. Finally, the resultant watermark is embedded into the Discrete Cosine Transform coefficients in the diagonal positions. At the receiver side, after watermark extraction and decryption, temporal tampering is detected through a mismatch between the frame index extracted from the temporal watermark and the observed frame index. Next, the feature is regenerate through temporal feature regeneration, and compared with the extracted feature. It is judged through the comparison whether the extracted temporal watermark is similar to that of the original watermarked video. Additionally, for spatial authentication, the tampered areas are located via the comparison between extracted and regenerated spatial features. Experimental results show that the proposed method is sensitive to intentional malicious attacks and modifications, whereas it is robust to legitimate manipulations, such as certain level of lossy compression, channel noise, Gaussian filtering and brightness adjustment. Through a comparison between the extracted frame index and the current frame index, the temporal tempering is identified. With the proposed scheme, a solution to the Kerckhoffs's principle problem is specified.

  • We present a new watermark design tool for digital images and digital videos that are based on human visual system (HVS) characteristics. In this tool, basic mechanisms (inhibitory and excitatory behaviour of cells) of HVS are used to determine image dependent upper bound values on watermark insertion. This allows us to insert maximai allowable transparent watermark, which in turn is extremely hard to attack with common image processing, Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) compression. As the number of details (e.g. edges) increases in an image, the HVS decrease its sensitivity to the details. In the same manner, as the number of motion increases in a video signal, the HVS decrease its sensitivity to the motions. We model this decreased sensitivity to the details and motions as an (motion) entropy masking. Entropy masking model can be efficiently used to increase the robustness of image and video watermarks. We have shown that our entropy-masking model provides watermark scheme with increased transparency and henceforth increased robustness.

  • Motion estimation occupies the largest computation in the video compression. Multiple processing elements are often exploited in parallel to meet processing speed. More processing elements increase processing speed, but they also increase hardware area. therefore, it is important to optimize the number of processing element. HEVC (high efficiency video coding) usually exploits multi-stage motion estimation algorithms for low computation and high performance. Since the number and position of search points are different in each stage, the utilization of the processing elements is not always 100% and the utilization is quite different with the number of processing elements. In this paper, the optimizing method is proposed on the number of processing elements. It finds out the optimal number of the processing elements for the given multi-stage motion estimation algorithm by calculating utilization and execution cycle of the processing elements.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to select motion vector predictor by considering prediction structure of a multi view content for coding efficiency of multi view coding which is being standardized in JVT. Motion vector of a different tendency is happened while carrying out temporal and view reference prediction of multi-view video coding. Also, due to the phenomena of motion vectors being searched in both temporal and view order, the motion vectors do not agree with each other resulting a decline in coding efficiency. This paper is about how the motion vector predictor are selected with information of prediction structure. By using the proposed method, a compression ratio of the proposed method in multi-view video coding is increased, and finally $0.03{\sim}0.1$ dB PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) improvement was obtained compared with the case of JMVM 3.6 method.
