The Use of Support Vector Machines for Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motors

  • This paper presents the fault diagnosis of induction motor based on support vector machine (SVMs). SVMs are well known as intelligent classifier with strong generalization ability. Application SVMs using kernel function is widely used for multi-class classification procedure. In this paper, the algorithm of SVMs will be combined with feature extraction and reduction using component analysis such as independent component analysis, principal component analysis and their kernel (KICA and KPCA). According to the result, component analysis is very useful to extract the useful features and to reduce the dimensionality of features so that the classification procedure in SVM can perform well. Moreover, this method is used to induction motor for faults detection based on vibration and current signals. The results show that this method can well classify and separate each condition of faults in induction motor based on experimental work.

  • The active magnetic bearing system for a TMP consists of four couples of magnets, five gap sensors with its amplifiers and a digital PID controller. For stabilizing and providing damping, digital PID controller is applied for each control axes and the inter-axis cross feedback controller is also applied to suppress low frequency vibration caused by gyroscopic moment of the rotor. Therefore in this paper, a digital controller of magnetic bearing for a TMP is design and examined.

  • Magnetic bearing has been adopted to support a rotor by electromagnetic force without mechanical contact and lubrication process. The recent growth of magnetic bearing applications in many industrial fields requires more accurate design of bearing-rotor system. Due to external forces and uncertainties of magnetic bearing system the actual performance and stability my be worse than it is designed. This paper describes the governing equations of rotor magnetic bearing systems and/or the designing of robust controller via standard $H_{\infty}$ control problem. The system stability and response characteristics are studied by simulations and verified with experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study was to develope a potato combine which can be attached to and controlled by three-point hitch of tractors. A vibrating mechanism was designed and constructed to dig potatoes, and to evaluate the effects of vibration on the potato harvesting performance of the test machine, potato separation from soil, harvesting loss, and damage to the potatoes. Three types of potato pick-up mechanisms were constructed and tested. Digging performance and material flow on the blade were improved as the vibrating amplitude and frequency increased and as the travel speed decreased. The sum of unrecovered and damaged potatoes was up to 7.8%. Three pick-up devices were not found to be useful by failing to elevate about 30% of dug potatoes to a given height.

  • Cogging torque is produced in a permanent magnet machine by the magnetic attraction between the rotor-mounted permanent magnets and the stator. It is an undesired effect that contributes to the machines' output ripple, vibration, and noise. This paper presents the stator design for reducing cogging torque in the BLDC motor by using the DOE(Design of Experiments). The cogging torque is computed by using a two-dimensional finite element analysis.

  • As electromagnetic systems have the complexity and high performance, they should be designed to take into account the vibration, noise and strain of mechanical aspect as well as electrical problems. Until now, mechanical approaches have been tried to analyze the subject, but it is difficult to figure out the matter in mechanical consideration. Because they are mainly related to electromagnetic phenomena. This paper deals with the theories and numerical formulations of magnetic force density. Several methods are applied to an actuator and DC machine model to calculate magnetic force density. These results are compared with the total force obtained by maxwell stress tensor and virtual work principle.

  • A diagnosis system that provides early warnings regarding machine malfunction is very important for rolling mill so as to avoid great losses resulting from unexpected shutdown of the production line. But it is very difficult to provide early warnings in rolling mill. Because dynamics of rolling mill is non-linear. This paper proposes a new method for diagnosis of rolling mill using wavelet to solve this problem. Proposed method that measures the vibration signals of rolling mill on-line and analyze it using wavelet to acquire pattern datas. And we design a nero-fuzzy model that diagnose a rolling mill using this data. Validity of the new method is asserted by numerical simulation.

  • Electronic or measuring instruments equipped with aspherical lens have recently been used since aspherical lens is more effective than spherical one. for the mass production of aspherical lenses, specific molds with precisely machined cores should be prepared. Some researches on the aspherical lens machining have been carried out to date. However, ultra-precise finding of aspherical or mold core has not been fully studied. In this study, the ultra-precise grinding and evaluating system were established to investigate the finding characteristics of aspherical lenses. Unlike conventional grinding process, since a highly-precise lathe were operated in a clean room without vibration the experimental results can be very useful for further studies on ultra-precise grinding process.

  • According to the development of industrial equipment such as semiconductor manufacturing machines, optical device, and precision machine tool, a high-precision translation system with wide range has been required. This paper describes a high-precision 2-axis translation system, which consists of microstage and global stage. In order to achieve the highresolution in the long range, some engineering techniques are used. Three linear guides with flexible coupling are adopted to reduce the motor vibration in the global stage. A simple elastic hinge structure activated by five PZT is applied to reduce the angular dev~atlon. As the result of combination of microstage and global stage associated with some engineering techniques, the 2-axis translation system can measure the 200 X 200 mrn range with the nanometer accuracy.

  • Most of tasks for vertical surface work in shipyard have been accomplished by human workers. However, such manual work often causes injury to workers, also the production cost becomes high due to increasing individual wage. To cope with the circumstance, shipbuilding companies try to introduce wall-climbing robots for carrying out such kind of tasks. In designing a wall-climbing robot, it is essential to minimize its own weight to improve the performance such as moving speed and power saving. For such purpose. this study proposes a method of optimal design for a wall-climbing robot using a genetic algorithm with multi-objective function. Specifically, the thickness of the robot base is minimized to reduce the weight while maintaining the allowable strength and avoiding the resonance frequencies. The proposed method is applied to the design of a wall-climbing robot, and the result shows that the method is useful at an early design stage.
