  • Free vibration characteristics of an initially stressed CD/DVD disk, which is designed for increasing critical speeds of current optical disks, are analyzed using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique based on variational formulations. Natural frequencies of the new disk depend on membrane stresses caused by disk rotation as well as residual stresses imposed during the cooling process of the injection molding. Critical speeds are calculated for the various initial patterns of radial and circumferential stresses. Initially imposed tensile stresses increase the natural frequencies of all the vibration modes except zero nodal diameter mode, whose natural frequency is independent of circumferential stress. A new disk with initial tensile stress of 0.5MPa is shown to have its critical speed about 30 % higher than the current optical disk.

  • This paper evaluates the closed loop performance of the reaching law based discrete sliding mode controller with multisensor data fusion (MSDF) in real time, by controlling the first two vibrating modes of a piezo actuated structure. The vibration is measured using two homogeneous piezo sensors. The states estimated from sensors output are fused. Four fusion algorithms are considered, whose output is used to control the structural vibration. The controller is designed using a model identified through linear Recursive Least Square (RLS) method, based on ARX model. Improved vibration suppression is achieved with fused data as compared to single sensor. The experimental evaluation of the closed loop performance of sliding mode controller with data fusion applied to piezo actuated structure is the contribution in this work.

  • This paper discusses the techniques, procedures and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) performed on the development aircraft and the simple procedure of FE model updating technique from the GVT results. The GVT was carried out using random excitation technique with MIMO(Multi-Input-Multi-Output) data acquistion method, and taking full advantage of poly-reference global parameter estimation technique to identify the vibration modes. In dynamic FE modeling, the aircraft was represented by beam elements and all dynamic analysis was performed using MSC/NASTRAN for this model. In updating procedure, the stiffness of the beam model was adjusted iteratively so as to get the natural frequencies and mode shapes close to the GVT results.

  • Reactor Noise is defined as the fluctuations of measured instrumentation signals during full-power operation of reactor which have informations on reactor system dynamics such as neutron kinetics, thermal-hydraulics, and structural dynamics. Reactor noise analyses of ex-core neutron detector signals have been performed to monitor the vibration modes of reactor internals such as fuel assembly and Core Support Barrel in Yonggwang 3&4 Nuclear Power Plant. A real time mode separation technique have been developed and applied for the analyses. It has been found that the first vibration mode frequency of the fuel assembly was around 2.5 Hz, the beam and shell mode frequencies of CSB(Core Support Barrel) 8 Hz and 14.5 Hz, respectively. Also the analyses data base have been constructed for the continuous monitoring and diagnose of the reactor internals.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of flexible cantilever beam system using electromagnetic farce actuator. The main objective of this paper is to propose the control algorithms and to implement the experimental setups for active vibration control. Dynamic equations of the electromagnetic actuator and the beam are combined to find the transfer function from the electromagnetic actuator to the laser sensor. The final transfer function is determined by considering only the first and second modes, and experiments confirm that this model works well. Several control algorithms are proposed and implemented on the experimental setups to show their efficacy. These include a PID control design, an optimal H$_2$ control design, and a fuzzy PID control design. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller were verified by both simulation and experiment results.

  • This paper compares and investigates the vibration and noise characteristics through simulations of 12/8 and 6/4 switched reluctance motors (SRMs). The radial force which is the main source of vibration is computed from two-dimensional(2D) transient magnetic finite element analysis (FEA) and compared in both time and frequency domain. At the same output power, the radial force of 6/4 SRM is found to be more than two times as that one of 12/8 SRM. Three-dimensional structural finite-element analysis (3D FEA) is used to study the mechanical characteristics. It can be concluded from static structural analysis that the maximum total deformation could be reduced to 1/26 if the motor is designed with 12/8 structure instead of 6/4. The dominant vibration modes are verified by modal analysis.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of RC frame is determined for different construction stages using Operational Modal Analyses method under ambient vibration. Full scaled, one bay and one story RC frames are selected as an application for different construction stages such as plane, brick in-filled and brick in-filled with plaster. The RC frame is vibrated by natural excitations with small impact effects and the response signals are measured using sensitive accelerometers during ambient vibration tests. Measurement time-frequency span and effective mode number are determined by considering similar studies in literature. Sensitive seismic accelerometers are used to collect signals obtained from the experimental tests. To obtain experimental dynamic characteristics, output-only system identification technique is employed namely; Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique in the frequency domain. It is demonstrated that the ambient vibration measurements are enough to identify the most significant modes of RC frames.

  • Free transverse vibration of shear deformable super-elliptical plates with uniform thickness was studied based on Mindlin plate theory using finite element method. Quadrilateral isoparametric elements were used in the paper. Sensitivity analysis was made to determine the influence of the thickness, the aspect ratio, and the shape of the plate on the natural frequency. Accuracy of the results computed in the current study was validated by comparing them with the solutions available in the literature. The results reveal that the frequencies of clamped super-elliptical plates lie in the range bounded by elliptical and rectangular plates irrespective of the aspect ratio, and furthermore, the frequency decreases if the super-elliptical power increases. A similar trend was observed for simply supported plates with high aspect ratio. The free vibration response for the first and the second symmetric-antisymmetric (SA) modes were found to be different for high aspect ratio. The results reveal that using insufficient number of degrees of freedom results in finding a totally different relation between the super-elliptical power and the frequency.

  • It is well known that the rotating motion of a blade-like structure induces centrifugal inertia force that causes the variation of the natural frequencies of the structure. Even though most of blade-like structures can be successfully Idealized as beams, some behave like plates rather than beams. This paper presents a modeling method for the flapwise bending vibration analysis of rotating cantilever plates. The dependence of natural frequencies and free vibration modes on the angular speed as well as the aspect ratio of a rotating plate is investigated. Particularly. the natural frequency loci crossing is observed and discussed In the present study.

  • This study discusses a non-contact optical technique, electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI), that is well suited for in-plane and out-of-plane deformation measurement. AS4/PEEK[30/-30/90]s, composite laminate plate was analyzed by ESPI to determine the vibration characteristics with tensile loading and without it. vibration mode shapes are quantitatively compared with the result of numerical analysis. The experimental results agree well with those of numerical analysis. we found that when the composite laminate plate is under the tensile loading, vibration modes can be measured with high accuracy by ESPI.
