  • A novel vibration control method for vibration reduction of a spacial structure subjected to earthquake excitation was proposed in this study. Generally, spatial structures have various vibration modes involving high-order modes and their natural frequencies are closely spaced. Therefore, in order to control these modes, a spatially distributed MTMDs (Multiple TMDs) method is proposed previously. MR (Magnetorheological) damper were used to enhance the control performance of the MTMDs. Accordingly, MSTMDs (Multiple Smart TMDs) were proposed in this study. An arch structure was used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures and it is a comparatively simple structure. MSTMDs were applied to the example arch structure and the seismic control performance were evaluated based on the numerical simulation. Fuzzy logic control algorithm (FLC) was used to generate command voltages sent for MSTMSs and the FLC was optimized by genetic algorithm. Based on the analytical results, it has been shown that the MSTMDs effectively decreased the dynamic responses of the arch structure subjected to earthquake loads.

  • The transducer for multi-directionally movable ultrasonic motor having lambda shaped vibrators has been proposed and designed. The two branches cross at a right angle with each other at the tip. FEM analyses of lambda shaped transducer were carried out to find vibration modes for ultrasonic motor. The lambda shaped transducer has one symmetric mode and two anti-symmetric modes. The symmetric mode generates the normal direction motion of the tip. The lateral and vertical direction motion of the tip are excited by two anti-symmetric modes. The normal and lateral direction motions made an lateral elliptic trajectory. And the normal and vertical direction motions made an vertical elliptic trajectory normal to previous one. The transducer with 1 mm in thickness and 25 mm in length has been fabricated and evaluated. The resonance frequencies of the transducer was 32 kHz and 103 kHz. The tangential and vertical vibration displacement of the transducer having the lateral elliptic trajectory were $1.5{\mu}m\;and\;1.1{\mu}m$, respectively at the driving voltage of 100 Vpp and frequency of 32 kHz and 103 kHz. And the tangential and vertical vibration displacement of the transducer having the vertical elliptic trajectory were $0.4{\mu}m\;and\;0.2{\mu}m$, respectively at the same driving condition.

  • According to the measured results of KTX brake squeal noise in this study, high level brake noise occurred in a wide frequency range, 100~18,000Hz. To identify the sources of the brake squeal noise, unstable vibration modes due to brake disc/pad interaction were analyzed under various conditions by the finite element method. Complex eigenvalues for a brake unit with a disc and four pads were obtained. It was found that the real parts of the complex eigenvalues, that is, unstable vibration modes, were closely related to friction coefficients, pressure on the brake cylinders, elastic moduli of the components, and other conditions.

  • In this paper, linear dynamic equations are derived from nonlinear dynamic equations of constrained multibody systems using the QR decomposition method. The derived linear equations are applied to a railway vehicle bogie. The vibration characteristics of the railway vehicle are investigated by calculating the natural mode and transfer function of the bogie frame in relation to rail-roughness input. The main modes of the bogie were found below 35Hz, and the local modes above 198Hz. The magnitude of the vertical transfer function varied with the forward velocity due to vertical and pitch modes, which were influenced by the forward velocity. The magnitude of the lateral transfer function was negligibly small, and the mode in the longitudinal direction was excited for longitudinal transfer function regardless of the forward velocity.

  • Finite element model and the basic experimental method have been developed to help the design of the transverse ultrasonic horn for flip-chip bonding. With two types of design the horn performance and ultrasonic characteristics are verified by using laser vibrometer. These analysis and experiment results can be the fundamental data for ultrasonic horn design considering the vibration modes and performance.

  • The study on the vibration characteristics of annular sector plates is important for structural engineers. In this study the vibration modes and their natural frequencies of annular sector plates clamped along the inner circumferential edge are obtained by the time average holographic interferometer according to the varying sector angle. The experimental results agree well with those obtained by the numerical analysis. The vibration characteristics of annular sector plates shows great dependence on the sector angle. The radial nodal lines converge to the center of annular sector plate.

  • Nonlinear vibration characteristics of a piezoelectric-type micro actuator used for hard disk drives are experimentally studied. The nonlinear characterisitics include hysteresis, superharmonic resonance, jump phenomenon, and shifting of natural frequencies. The vibration modes and frequencies of the commercial actuator of the Hutchinson's Magnum series are measured using a laser vibrometer. From harmonic excitation to the PZT acturator, we observe interesting hysteresis patterns with 3 times input frequency. It is shown that the micro actuator has the typical 3 times superhamonic resonances coupled to the first torsional and sway modes of the suspension.

  • In order to compute the radiated sound from a vibrating structure, the Rayleigh's integral equation has to be derived from the Helmholtz equation using Green's function. Generally, the surface velocity in the Rayleigh's integral equation uses the root mean square(rms) velocity. The calculation value is too large, because it's not considered cancelation. On the other hand. using the complex velocity, the sound pressure is calculated too small, because it considers that sound is perfectly canceled out. Therefore, this thesis proposes a correction factor(CF) which considers vibration modes and the method by which to calculate the radiating sound pressure. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental values, and the proposed method can be verified with confluence.

  • Eigenvalues are taken as performance criteria for structural damping design using viscoelastic material. Given material properties, optimal distribution of damping material is sought based on eigenvalue sensitivity. For eigenanalysis of frequency dependent viscoelastic material treated structures, Golla-Mushes-McTavish (GHM) model is used and some dominant modes are chosen for consideration. To avoid the intensity of computation caused by increased problem size, an alternative approximate method is proposed which uses elastic modes and can be applied under small damping assumption. A cantilever beam treated with unconstrained viscoelastic layer is tested and optimal distribution of thickness of the layer is illustrated. Partial coverage configurations are compared with the one-sided full coverage case.

  • A disk rotor dynamic analysis program called by DR. DAP is developed for disk drive spindle systems to analyze dynamic characteristics in operation and to estimate the effects of excitation sources. It is applicable to design for stabilization and to select parts of disk drive spindle systems. The disk drive spindle system in this program is modeled as a flexible shaft with multiple flexible disks, which is supported by bearings and driven by electric motor, and its complicated coupled vibration characteristics are analyzed by using a substructure synthesis technique with the assumed-modes method. All the coupled modes of interest can be well predicted by the example of a three disk hard disk drive with the three tuning parameters. It is also shown that, with the introduction of the excitation sources associated with the defects of ball bearing systems, the magnetic unbalance of spindle motor, the program can well predict the stability of the system, i.e., the possibility of resonance.
