  • In this study, computational demonstrations for the flutter suppression are presented for the 3-DOF airfoil system with oscillating flap. Advanced computational methods such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) are used and a simultaneous coupling method has been developed to accurately conduct flutter analyses. In addition, optimal control theory is integrated into the CFD based flutter analysis method to construct the coupled aeroservoelastic analysis system for the airfoil with oscillating flap. For a well-defined typical section model, fundamental unsteady aerodynamics and flutter characteristics are investigated. Finally, to show the effectiveness of flutter control the physical aeroelastic responses are directly compared between the open loop and the closed loop systems.

  • An advanced model for the linear flutter analysis is introduced in this paper. Higher-order beam structural models are developed by using the Carrera Unified Formulation, which allows for the straightforward implementation of arbitrarily rich displacement fields without the need of a-priori kinematic assumptions. The strong form of the principle of virtual displacements is used to obtain the equations of motion and the natural boundary conditions for beams in free vibration. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is then developed by relating the amplitudes of harmonically varying loads to those of the responses. The resulting dynamic stiffness matrix is used with particular reference to the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to carry out free vibration analyses. According to the doublet lattice method, the natural mode shapes are subsequently used as generalized motions for the generation of the unsteady aerodynamic generalized forces. Finally, the g-method is used to conduct flutter analyses of both isotropic and laminated composite lifting surfaces. The obtained results perfectly match those from 1D and 2D finite elements and those from experimental analyses. It can be stated that refined beam models are compulsory to deal with the flutter analysis of wing models whereas classical and lower-order models (up to the second-order) are not able to detect those flutter conditions that are characterized by bending-torsion couplings.

  • Flutter analysis procedure can be divided into two steps such as the computation of generalized mass, stiffness, and unsteady aerodynamic matrices and the calculation of major vibration modes frequency and damping values at each flight speed by solving the complex eigenvalue problem. In aircraft flutter analyses, most of the time is spent in the process of computing the unsteady aerodynamic matrices at each Mach-reduced frequency pairs defined. In this study, the method has been presented for computation and extraction of unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions dependent only on aerodynamic model using DMAP ALTER in MSC/NASTRAN SOL 145. In addition, efficient flutter analysis method has been suggested by computing and utilizing the unsteady generalized aerodynamic matrices for each analysis condition using the unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions extracted above.

  • In this study, flutter analyses for supercritical airfoil have been conducted in transonic region. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed static and dynamic responses of supercritical airfoil. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of cascades for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Also, flow-induced vibration (FIV) analyses for various supercritical airfoil models have been conducted. Detailed flutter responses for supercritical are presented to show the physical performance and vibration characteristics in various angle of attack.

  • In this study, supersonic and hypersonic flutter characteristics have been analyzed for the various typical section shapes of missile fin configurations. Nonlinear flutter analyses are conducted considering the effect of moving shock waves. Computational fluid dynamic method is applied to accurately predict unsteady aerodynamic loads due to structural motions for the solution of aeroelastic governing equations. Commonly used typical section shapes of supersonic and hypersonic launch vehicles are considered in the present numerical study. Detailed flutter responses for four different typical section models are presented and the flutter characteristics are physically investigated.

  • For the first time, the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory (HOSNDPT) is used for the vibration and flutter analyses of the multilayer functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) plates under supersonic airflow. For modeling the supersonic airflow, the linear piston theory is adopted. In HOSNDPT, Legendre polynomials are used to approximate the components of the displacement field in the thickness direction. So, all stress and strain components are encountered. Either uniform or three kinds of non-uniform distribution of graphene platelets (GPLs) into polymer matrix are considered. The Young modulus of the FG-GPLRC plate is estimated by the modified Halpin-Tsai model, while the Poisson ratio and mass density are determined by the rule of mixtures. The Hamilton's principle is used to obtain the governing equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions of the plate. For solving the plate's equations of motion, the Galerkin approach is applied. A comparison for the natural frequencies obtained based on the present investigation and those of three-dimensional elasticity theory shows a very good agreement. The flutter boundaries for FG-GPLRC plates based on HOSNDPT are described and the effects of GPL distribution patterns, the geometrical parameters and the weight fraction of GPLs on the flutter frequencies and flutter aerodynamic pressure of the plate are studied in detail. The obtained results show that by increasing 0.5% of GPLs into polymer matrix, the flutter aerodynamic pressure increases approximately 117%, 145%, 166% and 196% for FG-O, FG-A, UD and FG-X distribution patterns, respectively.

  • The linear and nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of a flat plate wing with flaperon have been performed by using frequency-domain and time-domain analyses. Natural modes from free vibration analysis and a doublet-hybrid method (DHM) are used for the computation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces. The flaperon hinge is represented by a free-play spring and is linearized by the described function method. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses indicate that flapping mode of the flaperon, the hinge stiffness and free-play of hinge have significant effects on the aeroelastic characteristics. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, different modes like stable and unstable limit-cycle-oscillation are observed in same flutter velocity depending on initial conditions.

  • In this study, the effect of planform curvature on the stability of coupled flow/structure vibration is examined in transonic and supersonic flow regions. The aeroelastic analysis for the frequency and time domain is performed to obtain the flutter solution. The doublet lattice method(DLM) in subsonic flow is used to calculate unsteady aerodynamics in the frequency domain. For all speed range, the time domain nonlinear unsteady transonic small disturbance code has been incorporated into the coupled-time integration aeroelastic analysis (CTIA). Two curved wings with experimental data have been considered in this paper MSC/NASTRAN is used for natural free vibration analyses of wing models. Predicted flutter dynamic pressures and frequencies are compared with experimental data in subsonic and transonic flow regions.

  • In this study, a fluid/structure coupled analysis system for simulating complex flow-induced vibration (FIV) phenomenon of cascades has been developed. The flow is modeled using Euler and Wavier-Stokes equations with different turbulent models. The fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic deformations due to the motion of structural boundary. The Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and the SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulent models are used to predict the transonic turbulent flows. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used in order to solve the coupled governing equations for viscous flow-induced vibration phenomena. For the purpose of validation for the developed FIV analysis system, comparison results for computational analyses of steady and unsteady aerodynamics and flutter analyses are presented in the transonic flow region. In addition, flow-induced vibration analyses for the isolated cascade and multi-blades cascade models have been conducted to show the physical fluid-structure interaction effects in the time domain.
