In submerged floating tunnels (SFTs), a next-generation maritime transportation infrastructure, the tunnel module floats in water due to buoyancy. For the effective and economical use of SFTs, connection with the ground is inevitable, but the stability of the shore connection is weak due to stress concentration caused by the displacement difference between the subsea bored tunnel and the SFT. The use of an elastic joint has been proposed as a solution to solve the stability problem, but it changes the dynamic characteristics of the SFT, such as natural frequency and mode shape. In this study, the finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the elastic joints in shore connections, assuming that the ground is a hard rock without displacement. In addition, a small-scale model test was performed for FEM model validation. A parametric study was conducted on the resonance behavior such as the natural frequency change and velocity, stress, and reaction force distribution change of the SFT system by varying the joint stiffness under loading conditions of various frequencies and directions. The results indicated that the natural frequency of the SFT system increased as the stiffness of the elastic joint increased, and the risk of resonance was the highest in the low-frequency environment. Moreover, stress concentration was observed in both the SFT and the shore connection when resonance occurred in the vertical mode. The results of this study are expected to be utilized in the process of quantitative research such as designing elastic joints to prevent resonance in the future.
Attention has been focused on geothermal energy as an alternative energy because it is continuously operable without external supply. Most of geothermal anomalies in Korea are related to deep circulation of groundwater through a fracture system in granite area. Therefore it is very important to understand the distribution of the fracture system which is the main channel of ground water. In this research, we constructed the velocity models with a fracture system and the layered sediments, respectively, and generated synthetic data sets with them to verify the presented vertical seismic profiling (VSP) preprocessing scheme. We compared the results from conventional VSP preprocessing flow to those from VSP preprocessing flow considering fracture system. We noticed that the preprocessing flow considering fracture system retains more sufficient signal including down-going wave than conventional preprocessing. In addition, we applied 3D VSP prestack phase screen migration to the preprocessed reversed VSP (RVSP) data from Seokmo Island so that we were able to image fracture structure of the geothermal site in Seokmo Island.

In this study, Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) has been developed as a counterpart of Atmospheric General Circulation (AGCM) for the study of coupled ocean-atmosphere climate system. The oceanic responses to given atmospheric boundary conditions have been investigated using the OGCM. In an integration carried out over 100 simulated years with climatological monthly mean data (EXP 1), most parts of the model reached a quasi-equilibrium climate reproducing many of the observed large-scale oceanic features remarkably well. Some observed narrow currents, however, such as North Equatorial Counter Current, were inevitably distorted due to the model's relatively coarse resolution. The seasonal changes in sea ice cover over the southern oceans around Antarctica were also simulated. In an experiment (EXP 2) under boundary condition of 10-year monthly data (1982-1991) from NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Project model properly reproduced major oceanic changes during the period, including El Ni$\tilde{n}$os of 1982-1983 and 1986-87. During the ENSO periods, the experiment showed eastward expansion of warm surface waters and a negative vertical velocity anomalies along' the equator in response to expansion of westerly current velocity anomalies as westerly wind anomalies propagated eastward. Simulated anomalous distribution and the time behavior in response to El Ni$\tilde{n}$o events is consistent with that of the observations. These experiments showed that the model has an ability to reproduce major mean and anomalous oceanic features and can be effectively used for the study of ocean-atmosphere coupling system.

OLAFOAM is the powerful CFD code and is an expanded version of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$, for wave mechanics simulation. The $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ does provide many solvers to correspond to each object of the numerical calculation in a variety of fields. OLAFOAM's governing equation bases on VARANS (Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equation, and the finite volume method is applied to numerical techniques. The program is coded in C++ and run on the Linux operating system. First of all, in this study, OLAFOAM was validated for 1) wave transformation inside porous structure under bore and regular wave conditions, 2) wave transformation by submerged breakwater under regular wave condition, and 3) regular wave transformation and resultant vertical velocity distribution under current by comparison with existing laboratory measurements. Hereafter, this study, which is almost no examination carried out until now, analyzed closely variation characteristics of water surface level, wave height, frequency spectrum, breaking waves, averaged velocity and turbulent kinetic energy around porous submerged breakwater in the wave and current coexisting field for the case of permeable or impermeable rear beach. It was revealed that the wave height fluctuation according to current direction(following or opposing) was closely related to the turbulent kinetic energy, and others.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suspended solids and eutrophication processes relationships in Chungju lake using CE-QUAL-W2, two-dimensional (2D) longitudinal/vertical hydrodynamic and water quality model. For water quality modeling, the lake segmentation was configured as 7 branches system according to their shape and tributary distribution. The model was calibrated (2010) and validated (2008) using 2 years of field data of water temperature, suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and algae (Chl-a). The water temperature began to increase in depth from April and the stratification occurred at about 10 m early July heavy rain. The high SS concentration of the interflow density currents entering from the watershed was well simulated especially for July 2008 heavy rainfall event. The simulated concentration range of TN and TP was acceptable, but the errors might occur form the poor reflection for sedimentation velocity of nitrogen component and adsorption-sediment of phosphorus in model. The concentration of Chl-a was simulated well with the algal growth patterns in summer of 2010 and 2008, but the error of under estimation may come from the use of width-averaged velocity and concentration, not considering the actual to one side inclination by wind effect.

The purpose of this study was to validate the EFDC model for the weir pool of Gangjeong-Goryong Weir located in Nakdong River, and evaluate the effect of flow control and phosphate loading reduction on the water quality and algae biomass by group (Diatom, Green, Cyanobacteria). As a result of model validation using 2018 experimental data, the time series of water level and vertical distribution of water temperature, DO, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus time series were properly simulated. Seasonal fluctuations of algae biomass by group were adequately reproduced, but the deviations between measured and simulated values were significant in some periods. As a result of scenario simulations to control the water level and flow rate, the thermal stratification was resolved as the water level was lowered and the flow rate increased. The flow velocity at which the water temperature stratification was resolved was about 0.1 m/s, which is consistent with the previous study results of Baekje Weir in Geum River. Simulations of the 2Q flow scenario showed that Chl-a decreased by 8.7% and the cell density of diatom and green algae declined. The cell density of cyanobacteria increased, however, because the high concentrations of cyanobacteria in the upstream boundary conditions directly affected downstream due to increased flow velocity. In the scenario simulation of reducing the influent phosphate load concentration (average 0.056 mg/L) to 50%, Chl-a decreased by 13.6%.The results suggest that the upstream algae concentration and phosphorus load reduction should be considered simultaneously with hydraulic control to prevent algal overgrowth of Gangjeong-Goryong Weir.

The objective of this study is to estimate bed-resistance in gravel-bed rivers using the equivalent roughness height($k_s$). We calculated the friction factor(f) with the measured data from 8 domestic gravel-bed rivers and investigated the size distributions of the bed materials. The averaged $k_s$ in each cross-section, which is determined under the hypothesis that the vertical velocity distribution follows the logarithmic law, is compared with the reach $k_s$ which is calculated with the cumulative grain diameter distribution curve of bed materials. Moreover, the applicability of existing formulae, such as Strickler type equations, is examined by comparing with Manning's n value converted from the $k_s$. According to the results, the reach $k_s$ proves to be a good indicator of representative characteristic of bed materials in a reach, and the Manning's n based on the reach $k_s$ is appropriate for practical estimation of the bed-resistance, for RMS errors between calculated and measured Manning's n is less than 0.003. The correlation between the $k_s$ and specified bed-material size($D_i$) is very low, so it is difficult to select a proper one among the existing empirical equations.

A drilling exploration in deep sea is being processed to develop new energy resource in the world. In 2007, the presence of the gas hydrate had been confirmed during the UBGH1 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 1) in the Ulleung Basin. Geotechnical properties of the deep marine sediment are important factors for assessing the safety of gas production facility and productivity from the hydrate bearing sediment. In this study, comprehensive laboratory tests are conducted to investigate the geotechnical engineering characteristics of the deep marine sediments recovered from the hydrate occurrence regions during the UBGH2 (Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 2) in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, Korea. The index properties of the specimens including the specific gravity, atterberg limits, specific surface, and particle size distribution are measured, and these are compared to the results reported by previous studies. A zero-lateral strain cell, which houses bender elements, is used to determine stress-dependant characteristics and shear wave velocities with the vertical effective stresses. Furthermore, the hydraulic conductivity is calculated based on the consolidation test results.

The distribution of water mass in Deukryang Bay was investigated using observational data obtained on July 12 (spring tide) and 19 (neap tide) in 1994. In characteristics of water mass at the bay the area is divided into three ones by a vertical attenuation coefficient k and a stratification parameter, log sub (10) (H/U super (3)), was H is depth, and U mean velocity in the bay. The contour of k=0.6 has a similar distribution to the isobath of 10m depth in spring tide, and of 5m depth in neap tide, respectively. This indicates that the water mass in the area between the isobath of 5m and 10m depth is changed by tidal periods. The stratification parameter corresponding to k=0.6 was 2.1~2.2. In the shallow water of 5m depth the characteristics of water mass was distributed in temperature of 25.5~31.$0^{\circ}C$ and salinity of 32.8~33.8PSU(Practical Salinity Unit), the temperature was high and the salinity distributed widely. In the deep water of 10m depth it was the temperature of 22.0~29.5$^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 33.0~33.6PSU, the temperature was low and the salinity distributed narrowly. In the middle depth water of 5m to 10m depth, the temperature of 22.0~30.$0^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 32.8~33.5PSU, its values showed the middle between the values of the deep area and the values of the shallow area.
