Steel casing used to keep a borehole wall in the construction of drilled shaft increases the vertical and lateral stiffness and strength of pile, but it is usually pulled out or ignored due to the absence of standard or the problem of erosion of steel casing. In order to make use of steel casing as a permanent structure, this study carried out an experimental work for the steel-concrete composite pile. Four types of piles were used to estimate the lateral behavior of piles, which are reinforced concrete pile, steel pile and steel-concrete composite pile with and without reinforcing bar. The subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the lateral stiffness of soil in laboratory. Also, the composite loading system which can apply the axial and lateral load simultaneously was employed.

Thermally-assisted magnetic recording (TAMR) is a potentially promising approach to increase the storage density of hard disk drive (HDD). However, TAMR has some issues such as temperature effects, media problems, thermal deformation and light delivery. In this research, we focused on light delivery. One of the powerful methods to deliver the light from laser diode to recording medium is the use of an optical fiber and a specially designed prism. However, the TAMR with optical fiber may have some flyability problems induced by the mounted optical fiber and prism. Also, the TAMR suspension using an optical fiber has high vertical and pitch stiffness. Therefore, p-torque is greatly increased by the optical fiber. Also, flying height (FH) of the slider with TAMR suspension can be largely changed by p-torque. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the pitch static attitude (PSA) tolerance and the FH by PSA of the TAMR suspension. The FH is investigated using various errors and the PSA tolerance for TAMR suspension is proposed.
Vertical vibration tests were conducted using model footings of different size and mass resting on the surface of finite sand layer with different height to width ratios and underlain by either rigid concrete base or natural red-earth base. A comparative study of the ratio of predicted and observed natural frequency ratio of the finite sand stratum was made using the calculated values of equivalent stiffness suggested by Gazetas (1983) and Baidya and Muralikrishna (2001). Comparison of results between model footings resting on finite sand stratum underlain by the rigid concrete base and the natural red-earth base showed that, the presence of a finite base of higher rigidity increases the resonant frequency significantly. With increase in H/B ratio beyond 2.0, the influence of both the rigid concrete and natural red-earth base decreases. Increase in the contact area of the footing increases the resonant frequency of the model footings resting on finite sand stratum underlain by both the types of finite bases. Both the predicted and the observed resonant frequency ratio decreases with increase in force rating and height to width ratio for a given series of model footing.
In common structural systems, there are some limitations to provide adequate lateral stiffness, high ductility, and architectural openings simultaneously. Consequently, the concept of T-Resisting Frame (TRF) has been introduced to improve the performance of structures. In this study, Configuration of TRF is a Vertical I-shaped Plate Girder (V.P.G) which is placed in the middle of the span and connected to side columns by two Horizontal Plate Girders (H.P.Gs) at each story level. System performance is improved by utilizing rigid connections in link beams (H.P.Gs). Plastic deformation leads to tension field action in H.P.Gs and causes energy dissipation in TRF; therefore, V.P.G. High plastic deformation in web of TRF's members affects the ductility of system. Moreover, in order to prevent shear buckling in web of TRF's members and improve overall performance of the system, appropriate criteria for placement of web stiffeners are presented in this study. In addition, an experimental study is conducted by applying cyclic loading and using finite element models. As a result, hysteresis curves indicate adequate lateral stiffness, stable hysteretic behavior, and high ductility factor of 6.73.
As a new type of large-span space structure, suspendome is composited of the upper single-layer reticulated shell and the lower cable-strut system. It has better mechanical properties compared to single-layer reticulated shell, and the overall stiffness of suspendome structure increases greatly due to the prestress of cable. Consequently, it can cross a larger span reasonably, economically and grandly with high rigidity, good stability and simple construction. For a better assessment of the advantages of mechanical characteristic of suspendome quantitatively, the static behavior of Kiewitt6 suspendome was studied by using finite element method, and ADINA was the software application to implement the analysis. By studying a certain suspendome, the internal forces, deformation and support constrained forces of the structure were obtained in this paper. Furthermore, the influences of parameters including prestress, stay bar length, cross-sectional area and rise-to-span ratio were also discussed. The results show that the increase of prestress and vertical stay bar length can improve the stiffness of suspendome; Cross-sectional area has nearly no impact on the static behavior, and the rise-to-span ratio is the most sensitive parameter.

In this paper the accumulation of local damage during the cyclic loading in reinforced high-strength concrete columns is experimentally investigated. Two identical column specimens with annular cross-section and spiral reinforcement were designed and two tests, up to failure, under the action of a constant vertical concentrated force and a time-dependent concentrated horizontal force, were carried out at the LNEC shaking tables facility. Sine type signals, controlled in amplitude, frequency and time duration were used for these experiments. The concept of local damage based on local stiffness degradation is considered in detail and illustrated by experimental results. The specimens were designed and reinforced in such a way that the accumulation of damage was predicted by dominating deformations (cracking and crushing of the concrete) while the increasing of the loading values was a dominating factor of damage. It was observed that the local damage of HSC columns has exposed their anisotropic local behaviour. The damage accumulation was slightly different from the expected in accordance with the continuum damage concept, and a partial random character was observed.

In an optical disc archive system, disc insertion process is an important part. Furthermore, dynamic analysis with the contact area between multi-bent leaf spring and a disc should be considered because the contact area is moved when the disc is inserted into the cartridge. In this paper, a finite element model of disc insertion was constructed based on dynamic characteristics, vertical stiffness, and dynamic response. The disc insertion model was validated with the experimental results. To identify the dynamic response of the disc induced by the changed contact area, applied force to the disc and the stiffness of the multi-bent leaf spring were analyzed. As the results, the factors which cause the failure of the disc insertion were investigated.

This research endeavor intends to use the implicit finite element method to investigate the structural response of steel shear walls with partial plate-column connection. To this end, comprehensive verification studies are initially performed by comparing the numerical predictions with several reported experimental results in order to demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the implicit analysis method. Comparison is made between the hysteresis curves, failure modes, and base shear capacities predicted numerically using ABAQUS software and obtained/observed experimentally. Following the validation of the finite element analysis approach, the effects of partial plate-column connection on the strength and stiffness performances of steel shear wall systems with different web-plate slenderness and aspect ratios under monotonic loading are investigated through a parametric study. While removal of the connection between the web-plate and columns can be beneficial by decreasing the overall system demand on the vertical boundary members, based on the results and findings of this study such detachment can lower the stiffness and strength capacities of steel shear walls by about 25%, on average.
This study utilized small-scale physical model tests to investigate the impact of different types of geosynthetics, including geocell, planar geotextile, and wraparound geotextile, on the behaviour of strip footings placed on 0.8 m thick soil fills and backfills with a slope angle of 70°. Bearing capacity and settlement of the footing and failure mechanisms are discussed and evaluated. The results revealed that the bearing capacity of footings situated on both unreinforced and reinforced slopes increased with a greater embedment depth of the footing. For settlement ratios below 4%, the geocell reinforcement exhibited significantly higher stiffness, carrying greater loads and experiencing less settlement compared to the planar and wraparound geotextile reinforcements. However, the performance of geocell reinforcement was influenced by the number and length of the geocell layers. Increasing the geocell back length ratio from 0.44 to 0.84 significantly improved the bearing capacity of the footing located at the crest of the reinforced slope. Adequate reinforcement length, particularly for geocell, enhanced the bearing pressure of the footing and increased the stiffness of the slope, resulting in reduced deflections. Increasing the length of reinforcement also led to improved performance of the footing located on wraparound geotextile reinforced slopes. In all reinforcement cases, reducing the vertical spacing between reinforcement layers from 100 mm to 75 mm allowed the slope to withstand much greater loads.
Firstly, a new kind of prismatic tensegrity structures with redundant cables is defined, the topology, geometry and forming conditions of which are introduced further. The development of its mechanical properties including self-stress states and structural stiffness with the increment of the twist angle is also investigated carefully. Combined with the topology of this kind of structures, a reasonable erection scheme is proposed, in which some temporary lifting points need to be set and two groups of vertical cables are tensioned in batches. Then, a simplified dynamic relaxation method is employed to track the erection process inversely, which aims to predict each intermediate equilibrium state during the construction, and give the key structural parameters that can effectively guide the construction. The removal of the active cables, the relaxation or tension of the passive cables are simulated by controlling their axial stiffness, so that the structural composition as well as the serial numbers of the elements always keep invariant regardless of the withdrawal of the slack cables. The whole analysis process is clear in concept, simple to implement and easy to popularize. Finally, several examples are given to verify the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method further.
