This paper concerns about the raking damages on the ultimate residual hull girder strength of bulk carriers by applying the modified R-D diagram (advanced method). The limited raking damage scenarios, based on the IMO's probability density function of grounding accidents, were carried out by using sampling technique. Recently, innovative method for the evaluation of the structural condition assessment, which covers the residual strength and damage index diagram (R-D diagram), was proposed by Paik et al. (2012). This concept is applied in the present study and modified R-D diagram, which can be considered vessel size effect, is then proposed. Four different types of bulk carrier structures, i.e., Handysize (37K), Supramax (57K), Kamsarmax (82K) and Capesize (181K) by Common Structural Rule (CSR), were applied to draw the general tendency. The ALPS/HULL, intelligent supersize finite element method, was employed for the ultimate longitudinal strength analysis. The obtained empirical formulas will be useful for the condition assessment of bulk carrier structures. It can also cover different sizes of the bulk carriers in terms of ultimate longitudinal strength. Important insights and findings with useful guidelines developed in this study are summarized.
In this study, a partially earth-anchored cable system is studied in order to reduce the dynamic wind response of cable-stayed bridges. The employment of earth-anchored cables changes the dynamic characteristics of cable-stayed bridges under wind loads. In order to estimate the changes in the member forces, the spectral analysis for wind buffeting loads are performed and the peak responses are evaluated using 3-D finite element models of the three-span cable-stayed bridges with the partially earth-anchored cable system and with the self-anchored cable system, respectively. Comparing the results for the two different models, it is found that the earth-anchored cables affect longitudinal and vertical modes of the bridge. The changes of the natural frequencies for the longitudinal modes remarkably decrease the peak bending moment in the pylon and the movements at the expansion joints. The small changes of the natural frequencies for the vertical modes slightly increase bending moments and deflections in the girder. The original effects of the partially earth-anchored cable system are also shown under wind loads; the decrement of girder axial forces and bearing uplifting forces, and the increment of cable forces in the earth-anchored cables.
In this study, semi-rigid light-weight framed structures analysis model (SERIFS) was developed by advancing the LEIFS model. This model enables us to analyze simultaneous effects of large deflection and semi-rigid connection by computing unbalanced load occurring in the process of repeated loading through equalization of bending moments and torsion. This model is also able to handle the effect of the semi-rigid connection and large deflection by modifying the elastic stiffness matrix using moment-rotation behavior of connection. Moment-rotation behavior of the semi-rigid connection was adopted from the experimental results of load-vertical displacement of frame element In conclusion, this model achieves to analyze the nonlinear and large deflection behavior on the semi-rigid and light-weight steel frame connection.
This paper estimates the residual longitudinal strength of a damaged double hull VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) under combined vertical and horizontal bending moments using Smith's method. The damage estimated in this study occurred due to collision or grounding accidents. The effects of the randomness of the yield stress, plate thickness, extent of damage, and the combination of these three parameters on the ultimate hull girder strength were investigated. Random variables were generated by a Monte Carlo simulation and applied to the double hull VLCC described by the ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress) 2000 report.
The effects of the forebody geometry of ships on the response function of wave loads are investigated by numerical calculations based on a strip method. For the vertical wave loads both shearing forces and bending moments, the V-shaped bow gives greater responses than the U-shaped one in regular oblique waves. These results have been clarified by the vector diagram of all static and dynamic components contributing to the resultant wave bending moment. In the present evaluation the phase relation among the components plays an important role. And the effect of the forebody geometry on lateral wave loads seems to be negligible from the result of the present investigation.

The current study is focused on the evaluation of the ultimate strength of stiffened panels found in ship hull structures that are subjected to combined uniaxial thrust, in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. This loading condition, which is in general ignored when performing buckling checks, applies to representative control geometries (stiffener with attached plating) as a consequence of the linearly varying normal stresses along the ship's depth induced by the hull-girder vertical bending moment. The problem is generalized by introducing a non-uniform thrust described by a displacement ratio and rotation angle and by introducing the slenderness ratios, within the practical range of interest. The formed design space is explored through methods sourcing from Design of Experiments and by applying non-linear finite element procedures. Surrogate empirical models have been constructed through regression analysis and Response Surface Methods. An additional empirical model is provided to the literature for predicting the ultimate strength under uniaxial thrust. The numerical experimentation has shown that is a significant influence on the ultimate strength of stiffened panels as the thrust non-uniformity increases.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the shear wall location in rigid frames on the dynamic behavior of a roof structure due to vertical and horizontal earthquake motions. The study deals with a gabled long span beam supported by two story rigid frames with shear walls. The earthquake response analysis is carried out to study the responses of the roof: vibration mode, natural period, bending moment and horizontal shear force of the bearings. The study results in the following conclusions: First, a large horizontal stiffness difference between the side frames is caused by the shear wall location, which results in a large vertical vibration of the roof and a large shear force at the side bearings. Second, in this case, the seismic design method for ordinary buildings is not useful in determining the distribution of the static equivalent loads for the seismic design of this kind of long span structures.

Comprehensive and accurate analysis of a finite foundation beam is a challenging engineering problem and an important subject in foundation design. One of the limitation of the traditional Winkler elastic foundation model is that the model neglects the effect of the interface resistance between the beam and the underneath foundation soil. By taking the beam-soil interface resistance into account, a deformation governing differential equation for a finite beam resting on the Winkler elastic foundation is developed. The coupling effect between vertical and horizontal displacements is also considered in the presented method. Using Galerkin method, semi-analytical solutions for vertical and horizontal displacements, axial force, shear force and bending moment of the beam under symmetric loads are presented. The influences of the interface resistance on the behavior of foundation beam are also investigated.
