A Method of Merge Candidate List Construction using an Alternative Merge Candidate (대체 병합 후보를 이용한 병합 후보 리스트 구성 기법)

  • Recently, enhanced methods on the inter merging have been being investigated in Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standardization which will be a next generation video coding standard with capability beyond the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). If there is not enough motion information available in the neighboring blocks in the merge mode, zero motion candidate is inserted into the merge candidate list, which could make the coding efficiency decreased. In this paper, we propose an efficient method of constructing the merge mode candidate list to reduce the case that the zero motion is used as a candidate by generating an alternative merge candidate. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives the average BD-rate gain of 0.2% with the decoding time increase of 3% in the comparison with VTM 1.0.

Toward 6 Degree-of-Freedom Video Coding Technique and Performance Analysis (6 자유도 전방위 몰입형 비디오의 압축 코덱 개발 및 성능 분석)

  • Recently, as the demand for immersive videos increases, efficient video processing techniques for omnidirectional immersive video is actively developed by MPEG-I. While the omnidirectional video provides a larger degree of freedom for a free viewpoint, the size of the video increases significantly. Furthermore, in order to compress 6 degree-of-freedom (6 DoF) videos that support motion parallax, it is required to develop a codec to yield better coding efficiency. In this paper, we develop a 6 DoF codec using Versatile Video Coding (VVC) as the next generation video coding standard. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first VVC-based 6 DoF video codec toward the future ISO/IEC 23090 Part 7 (Metadata for Immersive Media (Video)) MPEG-I standardization. The experiments were conducted on the seven test video sequences specified in Common Test Condition (CTC) in two operation modes of TMIV (Test Model for Immersive Media) software. It is demonstrated that the proposed codec improves coding performance around 33.8% BD-rate reduction in the MIV (Metadata for Immersive Video) mode and 30.2% BD-rate reduction in the MIV view mode as compared to the state-of-the-art TMIV reference software. We also show the performance comparisons using Immersive Video PSNR (IV-PSNR) and Mean Structural Similarity (MSSIM).

  • The Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) has studied future video coding (FVC) technologies with a potential compression capacity that significantly exceeds that of the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard. The joint exploration test model (JEM), a common platform for the exploration of FVC technologies in the JVET, employs quadtree plus binary tree block partitioning, which enhances the flexibility of coding unit partitioning. Despite significant improvement in coding efficiency for chrominance achieved by separating luminance and chrominance tree structures in I slices, this approach has intrinsic drawbacks that result in the redundancy of block partitioning data. In this paper, an adaptive tree structure correlating luminance and chrominance of single and dual trees is presented. Our proposed method resulted in an average reduction of -0.24% in the Y Bjontegaard Delta rate relative to the intracoding of JEM 6.0 common test conditions.

Gradient-Based Methods of Fast Intra Mode Decision and Block Partitioning in VVC (VVC의 기울기 기반 화면내 예측모드 결정 및 블록분할 고속화 기법)

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which has been developing as a next generation video coding standard, has adopted various techniques to achieve more than twice the compression performance of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). The recently released VVC Test Model (VTM) shows 38% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BD-rate) improvement and 9x/1.6x encoding/decoding complexity over HEVC. In order to reduce such increased complexity, various fast algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, gradient-based methods of fast intra mode decision and block splitting are presented. Experimental results show that, compared to VTM6.0, the proposed method gives up to 65% encoding time reduction with 3.54% BD-rate loss in All-Intra (AI) configuration.

Adaptive TBC in Intra Prediction on Versatile Video Coding (VVC의 화면 내 예측에서 적응적 TBC를 사용하는 방법)

  • VVC uses 67 modes in intra prediction. Most probable mode (MPM) is used to reduce data for the representation of intra prediction mode. If the mode to send exists in the MPM candidate, the index of the MPM list is transmitted. If it does not exist in the MPM candidate, TBC encoding is applied. When TBC is applied in intra prediction, three are selected in order of low number mode and coded into 5 bits. The remaining modes except the mode encoded by 5 bits are encoded by 6 bits. In this paper, we examine the limitations of the TBC used in VVC intra prediction and propose an adaptive method that can encode more efficiently than conventional methods when using TBC in intra prediction. As a result, the coding efficiency of the overall coding performance is 0.01% and 0.04% in AI and RA, respectively, compared with the conventional coding method.

  • 본 논문에서는 VVC(Versatile Video Coding) 화면 내 예측에서 참조 샘플 생성의 정확도를 높이기 위해 블록의 크기와 방향성 모드에 따라 더 많은 정수 위치 참조 샘플을 이용하는 보간 필터를 추가적으로 사용하는 방법을 제안한다. VVC 표준에서 4-tap 보간 필터를 사용하는 기존의 방식에 추가로 8-tap 보간 필터를 함께 사용하여 VVC 참조 소프트웨어인 VTM(VVC Test Model) 14.2[1] 대비 평균 -0.16% 의 luma BD-rate 개선을 보였다.

  • In the ongoing standardization of Versatile Video Coding (VVC), DCT-2, DST-7 and DCT-8 are accounted as the vital transform kernels. While storing all of those transform kernels, ROM memory storage is considered as the major problem. So, to deal with this scenario, a common sparse unified matrix concept is introduced in this paper. From the proposed matrix, any point transform kernels (DCT-2, DST-7, DCT-8, DST-4 and DCT-4) can be achieved after some mathematical computation. DCT-2, DST-7 and DCT-8 are the used major transform kernel in this paper.

  • The emerging Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard introduces Bi-prediction with CU-level Weights (BCW) to enhance the bi-predictive prediction. The syntax element of BCW index is adaptively coded according to the value of NoBackwardPredFlag which indicates if there is no future picture in the display order among the reference pictures, and it can violate the flexibility of codec and cause the dependency issue. This paper proposes BCW clean-up design that allows all weights can be parsed without any condition. The experimental results show negligible BD-rate losses while resolving the issues.

  • 새로운 비디오 부호화 표준으로 JVET 에서 표준화 중인 VVC(Versatile Video Coding)에서는 더욱 유연한 화면간 예측을 위해 TPM(Triangular Partitioning Mode)을 채택하여 적용하고 있다. 하지만, TPM을 위한 추가적인 움직임 탐색 및 움직임 정보 저장은 VVC 부/복호화기의 복잡도를 증가시킨다. 본 논문에서는 TPM의 복잡도를 줄이기 위한 간소화 기법을 제안한다. 제안기법은 분할된 두개의 삼각 블록에 대한 움직임 정보 조합의 수를 줄여 움직임 탐색의 수를 줄이고 전송되는 데이터의 오버헤드도 함께 줄이는 TPM 간소화 기법이다. 실험결과, 제안기법은 RA(Random Access)와 LDB(Low-Delay B) 부호화 모드에서 미미한 성능 감소가 있었지만 4~6%의 두드러진 부호화 수행 시간 감소를 확인할 수 있었다.
