An Exploratory Study on Home Concept through Verbal Expression of Middleclass Apartment Residents (언어적 표현을 통해 본 주거의 개념에 대한 탐구적 연구 - 중산층 아파트 거주주부를 대상으로 -)

  • Studies on housing concept currently activated by environmental psychology are in its early stage of developement. The trends can be characterized as case oriented, phenomenological, and exploratory. The purpose of this research was to explore empirically the housing concept from residents living in multi family housing complex through their verbal expressions. Subjects were 63 housewives of middle class households in Junggae area. Interview technique with open questions about housing concept and images was used. The responses were analyzed using content analysis in which episode was the analysis unit. Relaxation appeared the most important aspect of housing concept This seemed to imply the need for escaping from the modern city life with too much stimulus or stress. Answers on specific images considered desirable to keep and continue from past traditional housing to future housing showed their strong need for natural green environment such as garden and park. This supported the concept of relaxation as a major function of modern housing and showed a specific alternative mean to satisfy the relaxation concept.

Modularity and Modality in ‘Second’ Language Learning: The Case of a Polyglot Savant

  • I report on the case of a polyglot ‘savant’ (C), who is mildly autistic, severely apraxic, and of limited intellectual ability; yet who can read, write, speak and understand about twenty languages. I outline his abilities, both verbal and non-verbal, noting the asymmetry between his linguistic ability and his general intellectual inability and, within the former, between his unlimited morphological and lexical prowess as opposed to his limited syntax. I then spell out the implications of these findings for modularity. C's unique profile suggested a further project in which we taught him British Sign Language. I report on this work, paying particular attention to the learning and use of classifiers, and discuss its relevance to the issue of modality: whether the human language faculty is preferentially tied to the oral domain, or is ‘modality-neutral’ as between the spoken and the visual modes.

  • This study was to develop the counseling and education program for coping with physical, emotional, and verbal abuse between spouses. Results of empirical study of spouse abuse provided for the basis of designing this program. Consisting of 12 sessions (4 sessions of counseling and 8 sessions of education), the program was delivered to 10 marital couples in an area of Kyunggi-do province. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated through one-group pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test design. Semi-structured interview technique was also employed to evaluate the effectiveness. Resets of paired t-test showed that there were significant differences in several variables between pre-test and post-test period, and this effectiveness remained until follow-up. period. In particular, the degrees of verbal abuse of husbands, and of physical abuse of both husbands and wives were significantly decreased after participating in the program. Also, for both husbands and wives, the Levels of self-esteem and of quality of communication were increased, while the degree of depression was significantly decreased.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the concept of Aphasia of children in the western and oriental medicine. Methods : We surveyed the western and oriental medical books from to recent published books that have articles on Aphasia. Results and Conclusion : The concept of phonation organ in neiching is same as that of modern physiology. Sul-um is relative with verbal disturbance of central nervous disease and Hu-um is relative with verbal disturbance of peripheral nervous disease in modern medicine. The Aphasia of Children was classified two concept which is innate and acquirement Aphasia according to production cause. The Aphasia of children has the most close relation with the kidney and heart in the five zang-organ.

  • To reveal the interconnected brain regions involved in human working memory, their functional connectivity was analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). rCBF PET scans were peformed on 5 normal volunteers during the verbal and visual working memory tasks and PCA was applied. PCA produced the first principal components related with the increase of the difficulty and the second one which demonstrate the dissociation of verbal and visual memory system.

Preservice Teachers' Difficulties with Statistical Writing

  • These days, with the emphasis on statistical literacy, the importance of communication is the focus of attention. Communication about statistics is important since it is a way of describing the understanding of concepts and the interpretation of data. However, students usually have trouble with expressing what they understand, especially through writing. In this paper, we examined preservice teachers' difficulties when they wrote about statistical concepts. By comparing preservice teachers' written responses and interview transcripts of the variance concept task, we could find the missing information in their written language compared to their verbal language. From the results, we found that preservice teachers had difficulty in connecting terms contextually and conceptually, presenting various factors of the concepts that they considered, and presenting the problem solving strategies that they used.

Young Children's Problem-solving : The role of representation and evaluation (아동의 문제해결능력 : 표상과 평가능력의 역할)

  • The present study examined preschooler's (3-5yrs) representation and evaluation skills in a puzzle completion task. The puzzle contained panels of four children dressed for each seacon and the key to success was using a body scheme to reconstruct the panels (head, torso, legs, feet and sky on top). Baseline data (Study 1) revealed a developmental pattern of increasing bydy scheme representation along with more careful attention to season consitent construction. Spontaneous verbalization also shifted from more guiding statements (where'the head?) to move evaluative statements (this isn't right). Study 2 examined different intervention techniques for increasing representation (verbal laveling) and evaluative processes (error detection practice), along with a control group that had unassisted practice. Three year olds benefited from verbal labeling, four year olds from both types of training. Verbalizations also showed appropriated shifts toward increasing evaluation, particularly for the older children. These findings are discussed in terms of a developmental hypothesis that representation precedes evaluation skills and that training techniques should take into account the relative balance between representation and evaluation skills in the individual for the task at hand.

Topic Continuity in 5-Year-Old Children During Verbal Interactions With Peers (또래와의 언어적 상호작용에 나타난 만 5세 유아의 주제 수행 기술)

  • This study investigated topic continuity in 5-year-old children during verbal interactions with peers by socioeconomic status and type of task. Each of the 78 children in this study participated in topic continuity sessions consisting of 4 l0-minute play periods with a same-sex peer : 2 in familiar and 2 in unfamiliar situations. Sessions were videotaped and transcribed. Transcripts were analysed by a modified version of the Kertoy and Vetter (1995) topic coding system; categories included topic initiation, topic continuation(collaboration and incorporation), and off-topic. Results showed that children from middle-income families stayed on topic and collaborated more than children from low-income families. Children displayed more topic continuation, collaboration and incorporation in familiar than in unfamiliar situations.

An Analysis of Patterns and Characteristics of Momentum Effect on Learning Science Concepts (과학개념 학습지속 효과의 유형과 그 특성 분석)

  • This study tried to find out the effect to types of test items upon the momentum effect. The previous studies showed that the momentum effect is influenced by stduents' congnitive levels and the abstractness of test items. In this study focused on the types of test items The test items are divided into 4 different types of quantitative and qualitative, verbal and image. The result showed that qualitative items showed a longer momentum effect than quantitative ones. The image items and verbal items did not show significant difference in the duration of momentum effect. The interpretation of this would need a careful psychological analysis. Anyhow, this result reconfirmed the existence of the momentum effect and showed that the study on the momentum effect could be a Significant research paradigm.

Violence Experiences of Clinical Nurses and Nurse Aids in Hospitals (병원종사 간호 인력의 직장폭력 경험 실태)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study were to explore workplace violence experiences and to analyze differences of violence experiences based on the department and harmers to nurses in hospitals. Method: Data were collected from the self-reported survey of 496 nurses and nurse aids in three hospitals in D area in Korea from April to May in 2007. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis using SPSS Win 12.0. Result: The nurses in hospitals experienced offensive verbal abuse (88.4%), verbal threat (36.5%), physical violence (24.5%), serious physical violence (2.2%), and sexual harrassment (25.7%) during last one year in hospitals. Nursing staffs in hospital demonstrated different violent experiences by age and service areas. Conclusion: These findings revealed high rates of violence experiences of nursing staffs in hospital. Thus, hospitals should develop policies, guidelines, and programs for preventing and managing workplace violence.
