Purpose - This study attempts to analyze whether or not there are characteristics among the top management of companies that promote corporate performance at venture companies. It investigates the characteristics of the human and social capital that are inherent in top management at a venture company and conducts an empirical analysis of hypotheses examining if these characteristics will affect utilization of the governmental R&D support system as well as affect the firm's initial success. Research design, data, and methodology - This study conducted theoretical and empirical research together to accomplish the goal of the study. The pilot study researched human capital and social capital as the independent variables; the governmental R&D support system as the parameter; and, the initial success as the dependent variable. The empirical study carried out research on the model, establishment of hypotheses, and the statistical treatment. A survey was conducted targeting top management of high-tech venture companies in Daedeok Innopolis; 500 questionnaires were distributed; and, 222 were collected. Results - The human and social capital inherent in top management at venture companies in the early stages of their existence become good evaluation data for those who are invested in similar resources. If top management includes strong human and social capital, access to external resources will be easier; these will have a positive influence on the selection of overnmental support systems; and, this proper support will also have a positive influence on the initial success of the venture company. The results revealed the following. First, it was found that when the educational level and functional background, (the top management human capital), are the output function, top management human capital had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support funds. Second, it was found that the internal social capital and external social capital, (the top management social capital), had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support tasks. Third, it was found that selection of the governmental R&D support tasks at the start of the venture company had a positive influence on the corporate financial performance such as sales, business profits, and the increase in workers; and, had a significant influence on nonfinancial performance such as market share, competitive position, product competitiveness, and the future product development. Conclusions - Selection of the governmental R&D support system is not recognized as part of the direct sales of a venture company in its early stages, but as it can reduce costs for technical development and helps significantly in creating test products and mass production, it has a positive influence on the company's financial performance and nonfinancial performance as a result. Therefore, companies should take great efforts to frequently be selected as a candidate in the governmental R&D support system, as it can help facilitate R&D that requires extensive funds. As a result, companies can expect effects such as job creation and patent applications and they can advance future product sales.

There are many different types of risk capital competing for deals in the korean entrepreneurial capital market. In the past, even though korean private venture capitalists did not have their distinctive competitive advantages, due to government support and subsidies, they could be survived in the market. However, the government controlled area has changed to a market driven area which emphasizes market forces and competition rather than support and protection. In order to be competitive, Korean private venture capital firms need to recruit high calibre professionals and build required financial skills for wise entrepreneurial investments. The purpose of this article is to analyze the relationships among firm characteristics, human resources, and investment strategies of korean venture capital firms. We can find that the asset size of venture capital firms has a positive effect on the size of their human resources. However, we can not find any relationship between firm characteristics and investment strategies of venture capitals. Even though we find some evidences among some variables, we need to interpret the results very carefully. Further research would be needed to carried out to clarify the disputable interpretations and our understanding of this area.
In recent times the size of the world IPO in general has skyrocketed. Specifically, China's financial market development is becoming important as both the size of China's capital market and the number of companies going public are gradually increasing. This has led to a rapid development of venture vapital(VC) institutions in China for the past couple of decades. This study focuses on one of the three markets of China's Shenzhen Stock Exchange-the Growth Enterprise Board((GEB) hereafter, ChiNext). The ChiNext is established in October, 2009 to enable hi-tech or high growth potential technology companies that find it relatively difficult to fulfil the listing requirements of either the Shenzhen Main Board or Small and Medium Size Enterprise Board(SMEB) to go public. This study covers a three-year period(2012/01/-2015/01) and analyze first day initial return of 83 venture capital-backed companies and 53 non-venture capital-backed companies using T-test. Regression analysis is used as to examine the variables affecting IPO's first-day return. The empirical results are four-fold. First, the level of first day return of venture-backed is significantly lower than non venture capital backed support in the Chinese venture capital market. Second, the level of first-day return of listed companies supported by foreign venture capital is significantly higher than that of companies receiving domestic venture capital support. Third, the firms that have a large number of venture capital firms showed a low level of first-day return. Fourth, regression result for the IPO first-day return which is as dependent variable indicates that the venture capital support(VCAP), number of venture capital(VCNum), offering size(Lnsize) and PER all affect have negative effect on the first day initial return. Also, the venture capital type(VCType), turnover ratio and the the firm type(Tech-firms) statistically affect IPO first day return positively. Finally, by shedding more light on the IPO first-day return, this paper provides meaningful information to investors about the Chinese IPO market.
We made a regression analysis on the early IPO of venture capital investments in Korean IPO market. First, we found that it was likely to shorten the period to IPO in companies which were fast growing with a good operating cash flow, but these companies had a higher possibility of the earning management. Second, companies with more assets and larger size of the board of directors did not take companies public any earlier. Third, a better corporate governance also had no impact on the time period to IPO in the newly public firms. The findings above clearly show that venture-backed companies in Korea pursue the tendency of an early IPO. This phenomenon was much clearer when the companies were invested in by multiple venture capital firms than by a single investor. In general, venture capital firms invest in companies which are fast growing and which have a good operating cash flow. On the other side, venture capitals make investee companies go public earlier by manipulating operating earnings, so that they themselves may exit early. In conclusion, this research has shown that venture capitals in Korea do not play a positive role in the corporate transparency. This is the paradox of venture capital investment and this also shows the current status of Korean venture capital firms.

This paper is on the policy proposal for venture ecosystem. First, one of the three secrets of the US venture ecosystem is the law of 50:50. Angel capital investment is as important as venture capital investment. Although professional angel investors and accelerators account for as much as VC in the venture ecosystem, they are ignored from policy considerations. We argue that the revision of related law is urgent. Second, large US firms invest more in M&As than in internal R&D. Therefore, accelerators and professional angel investors could make effective investment recovery after investing in a startup company. In other words, angel capital does not come in without secondary market development. Angel capital and secondary markets are the two pillars of the venture ecosystem. The government alone is difficult to develop a secondary market. This is why the private sector should come in and introduce corporate venture capital (CVC). Third, we believe the policy direction for national economic growth should be extended from the startup to scale-up. This is because the startup's sales and job creation will start in five years. While the previous study focused on funding (venture financing), this paper aims to balance all three stages of a venture: startup, growth, and recovery, which are the life cycle of a venture company or venture investment. In particular, we propose specific policies in each chapter to improve practical application.

Venture capital invests the necessary capital and supports management and technology in promising small and medium-sized venture companies in the early stages of start-up with promising technology and excellent manpower. It plays a role as a key player in the venture ecosystem that realizes profits by collecting the investment through various means after growth. Venture capital's job is to recruit various investors(LPs) to invest in small and medium-sized venture companies with growth potential through the formation of venture investment funds, and to collect investment as companies grow, distribute and reinvest. The main tasks of venture capitalists, which play the most important role in venture investment, are finding promising companies, corporate analysis and evaluation, investment screening, follow-up management, and investment recovery. Venture capital's success indicators are fund formation and return on investment, and venture capitalists are rewarded with annual salary, performance-based incentive, and promotion with work performance such as investment, exit, and fund formation. Compared to the recent rapidly growing venture investment market, investment manpower is insufficient, and venture capital is making great efforts to foster manpower and establish infrastructure and systems for long-term service, but research has been conducted mainly from a quantitative perspective. Accordingly, this study aims to empirically analyzed the impact of investment experience, delegation of authority, job fit, and peer relationships on fund formation and return on investment according to the characteristics of the venture capital industry. The results of these empirical studies suggested that future venture capital needs a job environment and manpower operation strategy so that venture capitalists with high job fit and investment experience can work for a long time.
The reliability of technology valuation depends on, among other things, the reliability of the discount rate estimate. The weighted average cost of capital, generally accepted as discount rate, consists of cost of equity and cost of debt. The model used to estimate the cost of equity for publicly traded firms can not be used directly for small-sized venture firms. In addition, the estimation of cost of debt become very difficult, given the limited and volatile price history, because these small-sized venture firms do not have associated credit ratings. Since two kinds of cost of capital for the small-sized venture firms can not be estimated directly from market data, this study suggests statistical frame works for estimating unknown two kinds of cost of capital. The estimates of underlying cost of capital will help determine the size of appropriate discount rate with logical and scientific way when the technology valuation for small-sized venture firms is made. This study also suggests the necessity of the risk premium for the technology competitiveness to improve the estimation of the appropriate discount rate for small-sized venture firms.
This paper evaluates the role of Korean government in the venture capital industry, in particular in the stages of fund-raising and venture investment. Utilizing data from Korean Venture Capital Association (KVCA), the analysis is conducted for the venture boom and post-boom periods separately. Empirical results show that the government played a significant role in the fund-raising stage in both venture boom and post-boom periods. When it comes to the investment stage, however, the empirical results indicate that the government did not accomplish expected roles. In particular, the government failed to induce investments in the outside funds of which the government had a larger stake toward early-staged firms and guide common stock investments during the venture boom period. The empirical outcomes also show that the government has not properly increased venture investments on high-tech industries during the post-boom period. This paper argues tentative reasons why the policy failures were observed in relation to the policy implications and provide several pieces of supporting evidence.
Recently, the government has been pursuing various policies to create new industries and jobs through the invigoration of start-ups. For the sustained growth of start-ups, it is necessary to look not only at the supply of risk capital but also at policies for venture capital firms that nurture and foster start-ups. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects of the nurturing and fostering role of risk capital, such as mentorship on the performance of start-ups, and to do this we analyzed the effects, as a newly introduced form of venture capital, of mentoring by an accelerator and investor ties on the performance outcomes of start-ups. We find that mentoring and investor ties for start-up enterprises positively influence follow-up investment in start-ups. In addition, this study finds that with a younger CEO of a start-up, it is more likely that the performance of the start-up will improve. Meanwhile, when examining increases in employment as a measure of the business performance of start-ups, mentoring and investor ties are found to have a positive effect on the increase of employment at start-ups. These results suggest that there is a need to promote policies that strengthen the mentoring role of venture capital in Korea's equity finance policies and in the government's SME support policies.
This paper suggests objective practical investment index for venture capital investment evaluation, deviating from investment behavior that relies on venture capitalist's intuition and experience. To deduct universally valid practical venture investment index, We conducted a survey of venture capitalist 65 and analyzed the data using AHP method. The results show that when VCs determine whether to invest in a venture or not, market related factors are considered most important. For venture companies who hope to receive investment from VCs, market access, CEO's technical / managerial experience, and recommendation/reputation are considered as crucial factors.
