  • The local scour in waves can be thought of as very complex synthetic processes which is influenced by geology of bed material, bed flow in the sea and hydraulics condition. The most research until now be targeted at the scour depth and therefore the local scour width in waves has not been investigated as well. The size of wave or bottom velocity at the bed is direct cause of the local scour among lots of the scour effect factors, and the scour depth and width can be estimated through interrelationship analysis with scour area to use the dimensionless parameters including these such as Keulegan-Carpenter number, Ursell number etc. In this paper, to find out closely relation with the dimensionless parameters and scour width, performed an experiment with the variations of pipe diameters, wave heights and wave periods and then analyzed it. As the result, while Reynolds number and period parameter were seen to disperse local scour width largely, Shields number, KC number and Ursell number appeared good interrelationship. Specially, Shields number doesn't much affect the scour depth but has good relation for the scour width.

  • According to standard procedures as defined in the users handbook for sea level data processes, I was compared to Topex/Poseidon sea level data from the first 350days of mission and Tide Gauge sea level data from the Amsterdam- Crozet- Kerguelen region in the South Indian Ocean. The comparison improves significantly when many factors for the corrections were removed, then only the aliased oceanic tidal energy is removed by oceanic tide model(11) in this period. Making the corrections and smoothing the sea level data ()ver 60km along-track segments and the Tide Gauge sea level data for the time series results in the digital correlation and RMS difference between the two data of c=-0.12 and rms= 11.4cm, c=0.55 and rms=5.38cm, c=0.83 and rms=2.83cm, and c=0.24 and rms=6.72 for the Amsterdam, Crozet and Kerguelenplateau, and Kerguelen coast, respectively. It was also found that the Kerguelen plateau has a comparisons due to propagating signals(the baroclinic Rossby wave with velocity of -3.9 ~-4.2cm/sec, period of 167days and amplitude of 10cm) that introduce temporal lags(${\gamma}$: 10~30days) between the altimeter and tide gauge time series. The conclusion is that on timescales longer than about 10days the RMS sea level errors are less than or of the order of several centimeters and are mainly due to the effects of currents rather than the effects of stories(water temperature, density) and winds.

  • Purpose : Adiponectin is a molecule that plays an important role in the metabolic syndrome. In addition, its concentration is known to be decreased in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and coronary artery disease. Although a relationship between hypertension and serum adiponectin concentrations has been reported by several authors, such findings continue to be debated. We investigated whether hypoadiponectinemia is related to hypertension in adolescents and studied the associated genetic polymorphism. Methods : Forty hypertensive adolescents (Age 16-17 years old) and twenty normotensive matched subjects were included. Serum adipo-nectin, insulin, renin, aldosterone and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) levels were compared. Their carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were measured. Polymorphisms of the adiponectin I164T gene were investigated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results : The hypertensive adolescents had significantly greater cIMT and PWV. In addition, the serum aldosterone, renin and insulin levels were significantly higher in the hypertensive group. The plasma concentrations of adiponectin did not differ significantly between the two groups. TC genotype was not found in our study subjects; they all had the TT genotype of the adiponectine gene. Conclusion : The results of our study showed that adiponectin levels were not significantly different in adolescents with hypertension. There was no distinctive genetic polymorphism observed in this group of patients. Further large scale studies are needed to clarify the association between genetic variations and adiponectin in hypertensive adolescents.

  • We have collected shale specimens from the Pungam Basin in Kangwon province and investigated change of physical properties by freezing and thawing in water as well as in acidic fluid. The temperature range was $-20{\pm}2^{\circ}C\~15{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Specimens were frozen for 12 hours and thawed in water for 8 hours. Then, they were saturated in the vacuum chamber for 4 hours to make specimens fully saturated. This procedure was 1 cycle. We have measured absorption, ultrasonic velocity, shore hardness, slake durability and uniaxial compressive strength at every 5th cycles. The physical properties increased or decreased as freezing and thawing cycles increased. Uniaxial compressive strength decreased by 0.40MPa per cycle in water and by 0.48MPa in acidic fluid. Elastic constant also decreased by 0.21GPa per cycle in water and by 0.30GPa in acidic fluid. Absorption increased by $0.29\%$ and $0.37\%$ per cycle in water and acidic fluid, respectively. These results indicate that decrease in uniaxial compressive strength, elastic constant and absorption by freezing and thawing in acidic fluid is more rapid than in water. Ultrasonic velocities, shore hardness and slake durability show no differences in water and acidic fluid. When we compared our results with the temperatures in the Hongchon during the winter season, $6\~12$ cycles may be equivalent to 1 year.

  • The best way of investigating the physical and mechanical properties of subsurface materials is the combined interpretation of data from borehole geophysical surveys and geotechnical experiments with rock samples. In this study two surface seismic surveys with refraction and surface-wave method are alternatively conducted for downhole seismic surveys in test site for geological field trip in Jeungpyung, Chungbuk. P- and S-wave velocity structures are delineated by refraction and MASW (multichannel analysis of shear waves) methods, respectively. Possion's ratio section, reconstructed from P- and S-wave velocities, is correlated to the outcrop geological features consisting of reddish sedimentary rock, gray volcanic rock, and joints/fractures. In addition, rock samples representative for reddish sedimentary and gray volcanic features are geotechnically analyzed to provide physical, mechanical properties, and elastic modulus. Dynamic elastic moduli estimated from geophysical data is found to be higher than the one from geotechnical data. Reddish sedimentary rock characterized with low porosity and moisture content corresponds to the zone of low electrical resistivities and their small variations in the resistivity sections between the rainy and dry days. This trend suggests that the weathered gray volcanic rock and the nearby fractures with higher low porosity and moisture content are interpreted to be good carrier especially in rainy season.

  • A systematic laboratory compaction testing was performed with the laboratory seismic measurements of the compacted specimens sampled from various compaction fills and was supplemented with in-situ seismic testing to investigate the effects of compaction energy on the elastic wave velocities of the railway roadbed materials. The both variances of the compressive and shear wave velocities with moisture content curve ($V_p$-w and $V_s$-w curves) are similar to the general trend of the density-moisture content curve(${\gamma}_d$-w curve). At the wet side of optimal moisture content (OMC), either $V_p$ or $V_s$ does not significantly increase, which is well reflecting the no gaining in density with the increasing compaction energy exceeding modified-D compaction effort. $V_p$ increases linearly with ${\gamma}_d$ at the dry side of OMC, while it does exponentially at the wet side. The in-situ wave velocities were found to be influenced by the level of confinement and $V_s$ was more sensitive to compaction energy than $V_p$.

  • Variability of sea levels at Mukho and Ullungdo and sea level difference(SLD) associated with current is investigated. Time series of adjusted sea levels at both places have very similar pattern of change. Two components appear to contribute to the correlation between sea level and SLD. Low frequency thermosteric effect causes the sea level to rise and fall at the same time. Geostrophic effect of major currents is responsible for the sea level change in opposite ways at both sides. Two contributions have a cancelling effect for sea level change at Mukho while they are additive at Ullungdo. Characteristics of time series in frequency domain are divided into two parts with respect to 0.01 cycles per day(cpd). At Mukho, the cancelling effect yields small values of coherence for low-frequency bands whereas the dominant geostrophic influence may be responsible for the phase relations of about $\pm 180^{\circ}$ between sea level and SLD at higher frequency. Bimonthly dynamic height difference(DHD) between Mukho and Ullungdo is very significantly correlated with SLD. This result suggests that DHD thus the average velocity of current through the Mukho-Ullungdo section can successfully be diagnosed by the sea level records at both locations. For the annual variations, maximum SLD occurs at Mukho-Ullungdo section about 40 days later than the Korea Strait.

  • A sedimentation analysis has been attempted to figure out sedimentation environment due to construction of coastal jetties, such as fish harbor dike, flow guided dike and jetty in shallow Kusipo area, in which tidal range marks up to 6.6 meters in spring tide. As an initial approach of understanding field measurement were done on several stations along reference lines with total station and photo analysis taken by remote controlled small air craft far one and half years. Also numerical tests were done by 2-D ADCIRC model considering dry-wet treatment to evaluate flow and bottom shear stress variations. According to direct measurement, deposition seems to be dominant on Kusipo beach. Model results show bottom shear stress lessens to $0.10{\sim}0.15\;N/m^2$ on most shadow zone of jetties and the inner zone is suffering sedimentation as a result of dike construction. However this is the first approach with limited analysis, thus it should be dealt further considering physical characteristics of bottom sediments in a complete sediment model on upcoming study.

  • The border of the shorelines in a nation is an important factor in determining the border of a national territory, but Korea's shorelines are rapidly changing due to the recent rise in sea level from global warming and growth-centered economic policy over the decades of years. This research was done centering on the areas having well-preserved shorelines as they naturally are and other areas having damaged shorelines in their vicinities due to artificial structures at the two beaches located at the neighboring areas and having mutually homogeneous ocean conditions with each other. First, this research derived the shorelines using the aerial photographies taken from 1947 until 2007 and revised the tidal levels sounding data obtained from a hydrographical survey automation system consisting of Echosounder[Echotrac 3100] and Differential Global Positioning System[Beacon]by using topographical data and ships on land obtained by applying post-processing Kinematic GPS measuring method. In addition, this research evaluated the changes and dimensional variations for the last 60 years by dividing these determined shorelines into 5 sections. As a result, the Haewundae Beach showed a total of 29% decrease rate in dimension as of the year 2007 in comparison with the year 1947 due to a rapid dimensional decline centering on its west areas, while the dimension of the Gwanganri Beach showed an increase in its dimension amounting to a total of 69% due to the decrease in flow velocity by artificial structures built on both ends of the beach-forming accumulation; thus, it was found that there existed a big difference in deposition & accumulation tendency depending on neighboring environment in spite of the homogeneous ocean conditions.

  • In this study, numerical analysis of solid-liquid two-phase flow was conducted as a preliminary step to analyze the flow characteristics of drilling fluid using the commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX 14.5. The homogeneous model and separated flow model were used to simulate solid-liquid two-phase flow phenomena. In the separated flow model, Gidaspow's drag force model was applied with the kinetic theory model was applied for solid particles. The validity of the numerical model used in this study was verified based on the published experimental results. Numerical analysis was carried out for volume fractions of 0.1 to 0.5 and velocities of 1 to 5 m/s in a horizontal tube with a diameter of 54.9 mm and a length of 3 m. The Pressure drop and volume fraction distribution of solid particles were confirmed. The pressure drop was predicted using the homogeneous model and separated flow model within the MAE of 17.04 % and 8.98 %, respectively. A high volume fraction was observed in the lower part of the tube, and the volume fraction decreased toward the upper part. As velocity increased, variations in volume fraction distribution at varying heights were decreased, and the numerical results predicted these flow characteristics well.
