  • This paper presents an approach to define an optimal piezoactuator length to actively control structural vibration. The optimal ratio of the piezoactuator length against beam length when a pair of piezoceramic actuator and accelerometer is used to suppress unwanted vibration with direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control strategy is not clearly defined so far. It is well known that direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control can be very useful when a pair of sensor and actuator is collocated on structures with a high gain and excellent stability. It is considered that three different collocated pairs of piezoelectric actuators (20, 50 and 100 mm) and accelerometers installed on three identical clamped-clamped beams (300 * 20 * 1 mm). The response of each sensor-actuator pair requires strictly positive real (SPR) property to apply a high feedback gain. However the length of the piezoactuator affects SPR property of the sensor-actuator response. Intensive simulation and experiment shows the effect of the actuator length variation is strongly related with the frequency range of SPR property. A shorter actuator gave a wider SPR frequency range as a longer one had a narrower range. The shorter actuator showed limited control performance in spite of a higher gain was applied because the actuation force was relatively small. Thus an optimal length ratio (actuator length/beam length) was suggested to obtain relevant performance with good stability with DVFB strategy. The result of this investigation could give important information in the design of active control system to suppress unwanted vibration of smart structures with piezoelectric actuators and accelerometers.

  • This paper presents the effect of ground vibration induced by vibrohammer and RCD on adjancent subway tunnel performance using FDM program. Firstly, the stability criteria for structures near vibration source were proposed according to existing data, then peak particle velocity around tunnel was estimated based on detailed information of vibrohammer and existing formula for dynamic loads through numerical analysis. The peak particle velocity induced by RCD bit rotation was also estimated using surveyed data and formula. Consequently, displacement and stress responses were obtained at crown, shoulder and spring line and compared with the criteria to check stability of tunnel.

  • In this study, the heterogeneity of internal structure of various igneous rocks acquired in Korea was quantified and correlated with the seismic velocity and the point load strength. Three-dimensional X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) was used to obtain information on the internal structure of the rock specimen, and the representative unit length (LR) was calculated by applying a statistical technique to the CT images. We also proposed an estimation equation to predict the mechanical properties of rocks from the relationship between LR, acoustic velocity and point load strength. In the proposed method, it is shown that the characterization of internal structure of rocks could be utilized as an indirect index to account for the mechanical behavior of rocks by substituting physical laboratory testing for non-destructive test.

  • Ultrasonic is a powerful nondestructive technique for getting the information of flaws and material properties of in-services facilities. We prepared 4 different 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V specimens by Isothermal aging at $630^{\circ}C$. We evaluated material degradation using ultrasonic parameters, velocity, attenuation and harmonic generation. Attenuation and nonlinear parameter derived from harmonic generation efficiency increased as degradation. Especially the second harmonic of the fundamental wave in the 1,820h aging material was observed to exceed 20dB more than that in the un-aged material. But velocity remained virtually the same for all specimens. We concluded that nonlinear parameter and attenuation are sensitive to material degradation, but velocity was not. It'll be a good parameter for evaluating the material degradation.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide scientific information to track and field coaches and athletes through the analyses of the biomechanics characteristics of the top 4 sprinters in the men's 100 m final in the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Twelve video cameras (Sony, Japan) were used to capture the mid portion of the race (40 m - 70 m) with a sampling frequency of 60Hz. Biomechanical variables including the right ankle, knee and hip angles, the trunk angle, and the velocity of center of mass (COM) in the running direction, were calculated with the Kwon 3D program (Visol, Korea). Correlation coefficients between the COM velocity and each variables were calculated using Matlab 2008a (MathWorks, USA) at an alpha level of 0.05. The findings indicated that Yohan Blake (JAM) showed greater range of motion at the ankle and hip. Walter Dix(USA) showed greater knee and trunk movement, and Kim Collins (SKN) showed more dorsi-flexed and extended trunk angles during the race. Finally, Christophe Lemaitre (FRA) showed more plantar-flexed ankle with a less trunk motion, throughout the analyzed race.

  • Ion mass doping method has been implemented for the fabrication of large area electronic devices such as TFT-LCD. In this work, the effect of ion mass doping on the velocity and the behavior of MILC was investigated. When amorphous silicon was either doped or bombarded by accelerated ions, MILC velocity was reduced by over 50% and the front edge of MILC became coarse. In order to analyze the dependence of silicon film's properties on ion mass doping, ultraviolet reflectance and sulfate roughness were investigated. Both the velocity and the behavior of MILC were found to be related with the increase of surface roughness by ion bombardment.

  • This paper proposes an on-board orbit data generation algorithm for geostationary satellites. The concept of the proposed algorithm is as follows. From the ground, the position and velocity deviations with respect to the assumed reference orbit are computed for 48 hours of time duration in 30 minutes interval, and the generated data are up-loaded to the satellite to be stored. From the table, three nearest data sets are selected to compute position and velocity deviation for asked epoch time by applying $2^{nd}$ order polynomial interpolation. The computed position and velocity deviation data are added to reference orbit to recover absolute orbit information. Here, the reference orbit is selected to be ideal geostationary orbit with a zero inclination and zero eccentricity. Thanks to very low computational burden, this algorithm allows us to generate orbit data at 1Hz or even higher. In order to support 48 hours autonomy, maximum 3K byte memory is required as orbit data storage. It is estimated that this additional memory requirement is acceptable for geostationary satellite application.

  • The present manuscript focuses on the flow and heat transfer of the dusty fluid along exponentially stretching cylinder. Enormous attempts are made for fluid flow along cylinder but the study of fluid behavior along exponentially stretching cylinder is discussed lately. Using appropriate transformations, the governing partial differential equations are converted to non-dimensional ordinary differential equations. The transformed equations are solved numerically using Shooting technique with Runge-Kutta method. The influence of the physical parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin fraction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are examined in detail. The essential observations are as the fluid velocity decreases but temperature grows with rise in particle interaction parameter, and both the fluid velocity and temperature fall with increase in mass concentration parameter, Reynold number, Particle interaction parameter for temperature and the Prandtl number.

  • A Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has double salient poles structure and the phase windings are wound in stator. SRM hase more simple structure that of other motor, thus manufacture cost is low, mechanically strong, reliable to a poor environment such as high temperature, and maintenance cost is low because of brushless. SRM needs position detector to get rotator position information for phase excitation and tachometer or encoder for constant speed operation. But, this paper doesn\`s use an encoder of high cost for velocity measurement of rotator. Instead of it, the algorithm for position detection and velocity estimation from simple slotted disk has been proposed and developed. To implement variable speed digital control system with velocity estimation algorithm, the TMS320F240-20MIPS fixed point arithmetic processor of TI corporation is used. The experimental results of the developing system are enable to control speed with wide range, not only single pulse, hard chopping mode and soft chopping, ut also variable speed control, and advance angle control.
