  • The Brillouin spectrum of 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (5CB) liquid crystals homogeneously confined in a planar liquid crystal (LC) cell was measured using a 6-pass tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer. By adopting a special right-angle scattering geometry, the sound velocity of 5CB was estimated from the Brillouin shift without knowing the refractive index. The sound velocity of the longitudinal wave propagating along the direction of the directors aligned parallel to the glass plates of the LC cell was 1784${\pm}$7 m/s at 300 K. The attenuation coefficient $\alpha$ was estimated to be approximately $1.9{\times}10^6m^{-1}$, which is about twice as large as that of the longitudinal sound wave propagating along the direction perpendicular to the directors. The present method may be very useful in the evaluation of the elastic properties of the materials used in display devices, whose refractive indices are not known.

  • The combustion characteristics of methane oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic information for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since the small amount of nitrogen is included from the current low cost oxygen production process. Flame lengths decreased with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of mixing effect. Correlation equation between flame length and turbulent kinetic energy was proposed. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhanced entrainment of the product gas into flame zone as well as the reduction of residence time in combustion zone.

  • The digital HPTV(holographic particle tracking velocimetry) velocity field measurement system consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved the two frame PTV algorithm to extract 3-D displacement information of each particle located in 3D space. Because a digital CCD camera was used, some factors such as spatial resolution, numerical aperture, and particle concentration influenced on the performance of the developed digital HPTV. Especially, the particle concentration $(C_o)$ affected the reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio in the numerical reconstruction and particle extraction procedure. In this paper, the effect of particle concentration reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio were analyzed experimentally. Optimal particle concentration was found to be in the range of $C_o=11{\sim}17\;particles/mm^3$.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of wind power generation by a vehicle-induced at the median strip on highway. In order to find out wind field information, a CFD method was used. According to the simulation results, the x, y, z-component of the wind velocity around a median strip are rapidly changed at near before and behind a moving vehicle. The x-component of the wind velocity appears high within the range of the length of the passing vehicle, and the wind direction appeared in the opposite direction at the behind of a vehicle. However, x and y-components of the wind velocity at the behind of vehicle are shown constantly. We confirmed possibility of wind power generation using a vehicle-induced wind at the median strip.

  • It is recently well recognized that the technique for the one-sided stress wave velocity measurement in structural materials provides measurement in structural materials provides valuable information on the state of the material such as quality, uniformity, location of cracked or damaged area. This technique is especially effective to measure velocities of longitudinal and Rayleigh waves when access to only one surface of structure is possible. However, one of problems for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement is to get consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave. In this study, the laser based surface elastic wave was used to provide consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave into the materials. The velocities of creeping wave and Rayleigh wave in materials were measured by the one-sided technique using laser based surface elastic wave. These wave velocities were compared with bulk wave velocities such as longitudinal wave and shear wave velocities to certify accuracy of measurement. In addition, the mechanical properties such as poisson's ratio and specific modulus(E/p) were calculated with the velocities of surface elastic waves.

  • The coupling between the transverse and longitudinal components of the channel electron motion in NMOS devices leads to a reduction in the barrier height. Therefore, this study theoretically investigates the effects of the in-plane velocity of channel electrons on the capacitance-voltage characteristics of nano NMOS devices under inversion bias. Numerical calculation via a self-consistent solution to the coupled Schrodinger equation and Poisson equation is used in the investigation. The results demonstrate that such a coupling largely affects capacitance-voltage characteristic when the in-plane velocity of channel electrons is high. The ballistic transport ensures a high in-plane momentum. It suggests that such a coupling should be considered in the quantum capacitance-voltage modeling in ballistic transport devices.

  • In this paper, a springboard for diving is analysed to find out how much force a diver should apply to reach specific height when the diver jumps. The springboard is presumed to Co-rotational plane cantilever beam(CR-beam), so EDISON program related to Co-rotational framework is used. The force of the person is supposed to sine function and the demanded height is fixed. Same velocity makes same height regardless of diver's weight. So, the velocity of springboard when the feet of a diver are separated from the springboard is a main factor of the analysis. The result shows that there is no association between deformation and weight and also between velocity and weight. That is, the required force to reach a optimal height is fixed whatever the diver's weight is.

  • The biomechanical analysis of the load carrying effect on different floor surfaces has been conducted. Four different floor surfaces were prepared for ten subjects with each walking at a fixed velocity(1.33 m/sec) while carrying five different loads. The results showed that because of the significant interaction effect between floor slipperiness and the load carrying task, the load carrying effect should be analyzed according to different levels of the floor slipperiness, especially contaminant floors. On oily surfaces, slip distance(SD) and heel velocity (HV) increased whereas stride length(SL) decreased as load increased. In other words, significantly longer SD, faster HV, and no normal gait were found as load increased. As a result, a different protocol should be applied to measure floor slipperiness on oily floors as compared to dry surfaces for tribological approach.

  • In this paper, the moving distance and velocity of a single moving object are measured by sampling three frames in a two-dimensional line sequence image. The brightness of each frame is analyzed, and the bit data of their pixel are rearranged so that the difference image may be extracted. The parameters for recognition of the object are the gray level of the object, the number of vertex points and the distance between the vertex points. The moving distance obtained from the coordinate which is constructed by the bit processing of the data in the memory map of a microcomputer, and the moving velocity is obtained from the moving distance and the time interval between the first and second sampled frames.
