  • The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical fence was investigated using the two-frame PTV system. The Reynolds number based on the fence height(H) was 2950. From this study, it is revealed that at least 400 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 100 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information. Various turbulence statistics such as turbulent intensities, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were calculated from 700 instantaneous velocity vector fields. The fence flow has an unsteady recirculation region behind the fence, followed by a slow relaxation to the flat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about 11.2H. There exists a region of negative Reynolds shear stress near the fence top due to the highly convex (stabilizing) streamline-curvature of the upstream flow. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have significant influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) velocity field information of a laminar flow in a curved micro tube of circular cross-section has been measured using a digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV). The temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity field of a water flow in a curved micro tube of $100\;{\mu}\;m$ and $300\;{\mu}\;m$ in inner diameter was obtained. The 3D mean velocity field distribution was obtained quantitatively by statistical-averaging of instantaneous velocity fields. At low Dean number (De), a secondary flow was not generated in the curved tube. With increasing Dean number, the secondary flow constituted of two large-scale counter-rotating vortices was formed due to enhanced centrifugal force. To reveal the flow characteristics of high Dean numbers, trajectories of fluid particles were evaluated experimentally from the 3D velocity fields data measured by the HPTV technique. The present experimental results, especially the 3D particle trajectories, would be helpful to design and to understand the mixing phenomena in 3D curved passages of various curved micro-tubes or micro-channels.

  • Recently, the velocity stack domain is having an attention as a very useful domain for various processing in seismic data processing. In order to be used in many applications, the velocity stack should be obtained through an inversion method and the used inversion should have properties like the robustness to noise and the parsimony of velocity stack result. Iteratively Reweighted Least-Squares (IRLS) method is the one of the inversion methods that have such properties. This paper describes the theoretical background, implementation of the method, and examines the characteristics and limits of the IRLS method.

  • Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.

  • Check valves playa vital role in the operation and protection of nuclear power plants. Check valves failure in nuclear power plants often lead to a plant transient or trip. The analysis of historical failure data gives information on the populations of various types of check valves, the systems they are installed in, failure modes, effects, methods of detection, and the mechanisms of the failures. A majority of check valve failures are caused by improper application. The experimental apparatus is designed and installed to measure the disc positions with flow velocity, Vopen and Vmin for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves. The minimum flow velocity necessary to just open the disc at a full open position is referred to as Vopen, and Vmin is defined as the minimum velocity to fully open the disc and hold it without motion. In the experiments, Vmin is determined as the minimum flow velocity at which the back stop load begins to increase after the disc is fully opened or the oscillation level of disc is reduced below $1^{\circ}$. The results show that the Vmin velocities for 3 inch and 6 inch swing check valves are about 27.3% and 17.5% higher than the Vopen velocities, respectively.

  • ^In this paper, diagnostic technique for detecting the engine faults, especially misfire, are introduced and compared with each other under the same conditions. With all of them the instantaneous angular velocitys, measured at the flywheel, were analyzed. The techniques include the frequency analysis, auto-correlation function, velocity index, acceleration index, maximum acceleration index, and integrated torque index. Since the main driving components for the angular velocity fluctuation are both the pressure and the inertia torque, the component of the inertia torque in it must be excluded to extract the information of the combustion from the angular velocity. To do this, it is required to consider only the first half of the combustion period in the angular velocity fluctuations, which has never been proposed in the existing methods. On the basis of this fact, the results show that the most effective diagnostic technique is maximum acceleration index.

  • Strong ground motions at specific sites can cause severe damage to structures. Understanding the influence of site characteristics on the dynamic response of structures is crucial for evaluating their seismic performance and mitigating the potential damage caused by site effects. This study investigates the impact of the average shear wave velocity, as a site characteristic, on the seismic response of low-to-medium-rise reinforced concrete buildings. To explore them, one-dimensional soil column models were generated using shear wave velocity profile from California, and nonlinear site response analyses were performed using bedrock motions. Nonlinear dynamic structural analyses were conducted for reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame models based on the regional information. The effect of shear wave velocity on the structural response and surface ground motions was examined. The results showed that strong ground motions tend to exhibit higher damping on softer soils, reducing their intensity, while on stiffer soils, the ground motion intensity tends to amplify. Consequently, the structural response tended to increase on stiffer soils compared to softer soils.

  • This paper describes the upgrade of an existing wave information retrieval algorithm by employing noise reduction in the pixel domain. Several algorithms for collecting wave information parameters from X-band radar image sequences including the wind field and current velocity have been developed over the past three decades. Using these algorithms, a band-pass filter (BPF) is applied to remove the non-wave contribution from the image spectra after the sea surface current velocity has been computed. However, such BPF designs have been both complex and insufficient in removing undesired components in X-band radar images. For this study, to improve the performance of wave information retrieval, an efficient noise reduction algorithm is incorporated into a regular wave information retrieval process. That is, the proposed algorithm was designed for operation in a more proper manner by effectively removing the undesired components in the pixel domain. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm produces very close estimates to the buoy data records under undesirable noise conditions.

  • This study conducted experimental observations of the settling velocity of a coarse particle in water varying material type and particle size and compared the results with preexisting empirical equations. Three types of materials, which are polyacetal, glass and steel, were used in this study and the diameter of particle ranged from 1 mm to 20 mm. Experiment results showed that the settling velocity of coarse particle had a significant difference from Stokes equation which is known applicable for a fine particle smaller than $50{\mu}m$. In addition, the observed particle velocity showed a significant difference when compared with other empirical equations, which was proposed for estimating the settling velocity of a particle regardless of particle size, depending on the material type and particle size. The results from experimental observations indicated that the settling velocity of a coarse particle was relatively in smaller difference to other empirical equations for the particle size smaller than 3 mm, but as the size increased the difference in the settling velocity also increased. This study clearly showed that the settling velocity of a coarse particle velocity can be significantly different depending on particle size and density and the empirical equations may not reliably estimate the settling velocity of a coarse particle so that they should not be used as it is and a verification of them is necessarily before any use. The study results would provide a useful information for a better understanding of settling velocity of a particle in water.
