  • The effect of the deviations of single mode fiber lengths and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) on the compensation for the distorted WDM signals in the dispersion-managed optical links with the specially artificial distributions of the lengths of SMFs and RDPSs. The considered artificial distribution is following; the lengths of SMF and RDPSs between the adjacent fiber span are more descended in the half transmission section from transmitter to optical phase conjugator (OPC), and those are more ascended in the rest half transmission section from OPC to the receiver, as number of fiber spans are more increased.

  • We propose a wireless-powered multihop transmission scheme using inter-node cooperation in a linear network topology. The proposed protocol determines the energy transfer time for each node to make the lifetime of the each node be equal in order to maximize the lifetime of the multihop path. To make the lifetime of each node the same, we apply the flocking algorithm which imitates the behavior of a bird flock flying at the same velocity, so that the lifetime of the nodes is averaged locally. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can maximize the lifetime of the multihop path by making all nodes have the same lifetime.

  • In this paper we proposed an intelligent PTZ camera system which detects, classifies and tracks moving objects. If a moving object is detected, features are extracted for classification and then realtime tracking follows. We used GMM for detection followed by shadow removal. Legendre moment is used for classification. Without auto focusing, we can control the PTZ camera movement by using center points of the image and object's direction, distance and velocity. To implement the realtime system, we used TI DM6446 Davinci processor. Throughout the experiment, we obtained system's high performance in classification and tracking both at vehicle's normal and high speed motion.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient camera operating scheme to save energy which can be used for mass surveillance cameras. This technique determines how many cameras should be turned on in the consideration of the velocity vector of monitoring targets, which is acquired by DSRC object tracking, the model of the specification of installed cameras, and the road model of installed sites. Also, we address other techniques used to save energy for the surveillance system as well. Throughout performance evaluation, we demonstrate the excellence of our proposed scheme compared with previous approaches.

  • A planar waveguide model is presented for calculating dispersion characteristics with the frequency dependent effective dielectric constant in microstrip lines and results are compared by the variation of each parameter. It is compared to use a wide range of relative dielectric constants and the strip $h_{width}$strate height, W/h ratios, 0.9$\leq$W/h$\leq$2. As the result of a computer simulation, the normalized phase velocity using a planar waveguide model for each case is more closely approached to 1/$\sqrt{\epsilon_r}$ as the increasing of the frequency than the other method that has already been presented.

  • This paper will examine the possibilities of the virtual tests of composite structures by simulating mechanical behaviors by using supercomputing technologies, which have now become easily available and powerful but relatively inexpensive. We will describe mainly the applications of large-scale finite element analysis using the direct numerical simulation (DNS), which describes composite material properties considering individual constituent properties. DNS approach is based on the full microscopic concepts, which can provide detailed information about the local interaction between the constituents and micro-failure mechanisms by separate modeling of each constituent. Various composite materials such as metal matrix composites (MMCs), active fiber composites (AFCs), boron/epoxy cross-ply laminates and 3-D orthogonal woven composites are selected as verification examples of DNS. The effective elastic moduli and impact structural characteristics of the composites are determined using the DNS models. These DNS models can also give the global and local information about deformations and influences of high local in-plane and interlaminar stresses induced by transverse impact loading at a microscopic level inside the materials. Furthermore, the multi-scale models based on DNS concepts considering microscopic and macroscopic structures simultaneously are also developed and a numerical low-velocity impact simulation is performed using these multi-scale DNS models. Through these various applications of DNS models, it can be shown that the DNS approach can provide insights of various structural behaviors of composite structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a simplified model of predicted mean vote (PMV) using multiple regression analysis. We performed the experiments and the numerical calculations in the lecture room during summer and winter to simplify PMV. And the multiple regression analysis on PMV was conducted to estimate the contribution of independent variables toward PMV. From the multiple regression analysis, we found that the effect of independent variables on PMV followed in order, clo value>air temperatur>air velocity>mean radiant temperature>relative humidity. And the simplified PMV was proposed through a few assumptions and then was compared with original PMV. They had a good agreement with each other. Additionally, we compared the simplified PMV with EDT. We expected that the simplified PMV can be more useful than EDT to evaluate the thermal comfort in the place, where radiation is dominant. But the comfort range of the simplified PMV should be adjusted to predict the exact thermal comfort in the future.

  • A virtual force is generated and fed back to the operator to make the teleoperation more reliable, which reflects the relationship between a slave robot and an uncertain remote environment as a form of an impedance. In general, for the teleoperation, the teleoperated mobile robot takes pictures of the remote environment and sends the visual information back to the operator over the Internet. Because of the limitations of communication bandwidth and narrow view-angles of camera, it is not possible to watch certain regions, for examples, the shadow and curved areas. To overcome this problem, a virtual force is generated according to both the distance between the obstacle and the robot and the approaching velocity of the obstacle w.r.t the collision vector based on the ultrasonic sensor data. This virtual force is transferred back to the master (two degrees of freedom joystick) over the Internet to enable a human operator to estimate the position of obstacle at the remote site. By holding this master, in spite of limited visual information, the operator can feel the spatial sense against the remote environment. It is demonstrated by experiments that this collision vector based haptic reflection improves the performance of teleoperated mobile robot significantly.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method that sequentially estimates TDOA(Time Delay Of Arrival) and FDOA(Frequency Delay Of Arrival) for extracting the information about the bearing and relative velocity of a target in passive radar or sonar arrays. The objective is to efficiently estimate the TDOA and FDOA between two sensor signal measurements, corrupted by correlated Gaussian noise sources in an unknown way. The proposed method utilizes the one dimensional slice function of the third order cumulants between the two sensor measurements, by which the effect of correlated Gaussian measurement noises can be significantly suppressed for the estimation of TDOA. Because the proposed sequential algoritjhm uses the one dimensional complex ambiguity function based on the TDOA estimate from the first step, the amount of computations needed for accurate estimationof FDOA can be dramatically reduced, especially for the cases where high frequency resolution is required. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing TDOA/FDOA estimation algorithms based on the ML(maximum likelihood) criterionandthe complex ambiguity function of the third order cumulant as well, in the MSE(mean squared error) sense and computational burden. Various numerical resutls on the detection probability, MSE and the floatingpoint computational burden are presented via Monte-Carlo simulations for different types of noises, different lengths of data, and different signal-to-noise ratios.

  • In the three axis control of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite by using reaction wheel and gyro, a reaction wheel produces the control torque by the wheel speed or momentum, and a gyro carries out measuring of the attitude angle and the attitude angular velocity. In this paper, the dynamic modelling of LEO is consisted of the one from the rotational motion of the satellite with basic rigid body model and a flexible model, in addition to the reaction wheel model. A robust controller $(H_\infty)$ is designed to stabilize the rigid body and the flexible body of satellite, which can be perturbed due to disturbance, etc. The result obtained by $H_\infty$ controller is compared with that of the PI (Proportional and Integration) controller, which has been traditionally using for the stabilizing LEO satellite.
