  • Earth's magnetopause separating the fast and often turbulent magnetosheath and the relatively stagnant magnetosphere provides various forms of free energy that generate low-frequency surface waves. The source mechanism of this energy includes current-driven kinetic physical processes such as magnetic reconnection on the dayside magnetopause and flux transfer events drifting along the magnetopause, and velocity shear-driven (Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) or density/pressure gradient-driven (Rayleigh-Taylor instability) magnetohydro-dynamics (MHD) instabilities. The solar wind external perturbations (impulsive transient pressure pulses or quasi-periodic dynamic pressure variations) act as seed fluctuations for the magnetopause waves and trigger ULF pulsations inside the magnetosphere via global modes or mode conversion at the magnetopause. The magnetopause waves thus play an important role in the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling, which is the key to space weather. This paper presents recent findings regarding the generation of surface waves (e.g., Kelvin-Helmholtz waves) at the Earth's magnetopause and analytic and observational studies accountable for the linking of the magnetopause waves and inner magnetospheric ULF pulsations, and the impacts of magnetopause waves on the dynamics of the magnetopause and on the inner magnetosphere.

  • Vanadium slags is a kind of vanadiferous solid waste from steelmaking process. It not only occupies land, pollutes environment, but also leads to waste of resources. Based on the difference of magnetic susceptibility of different particles caused by their chemical and physical properties from vanadium slag, a new technology, superconducting high gradient magnetic separation was investigated for separation and extraction of valuable substances from vanadium slag. The magnetic concentrate was obtained under optimal parameters, i.e., a particle size -200 mesh, a magnetic flux density of 0.8 T, a slurry concentration of 5 g/L, an amount of steel wools of 25 g and a slurry flow velocity of 2 L/min. The content of $Fe_2O_3$ in concentrate could be increased from 39.6% to 55.0% and $V_2O_5$ from 2.5% to 4.0%, respectively. The recovery rate is up to 42.9%, and the vanadium slag has been effectively reused.

  • Optimum design conditions of rapid mixing impellers for an effective Water Treatment Plant operation were experimentally studied by thorough examination of parameters, such as impeller type and detention time. which govern the removal efficiency of turbidity. It was found that the impeller type is one of the major parameters governing the economic power consumption and the efficiency of turbidity removal. The experimental results showed that not only the velocity gradient G but also a new design guide. so called mixing energy per unit volume of raw water, could be used as a design and operation guides for rapid mixing in W.T.P.

  • Hemodynamics of the TPLS(Twin Pulse Life Support System) is numerically investigated to delineate the possibility of hemolysis in blood. Computational method employing finite element algorithm is utilized to solve the blood flow of the sac squeezed by moving actuator. We assume that the blood flow interacts with the sac material which is activated by the rigid body motion of the actuator. Valve dynamics at the ends of the sac is simplified as on/off type motion. We compute the transient viscous flow in the two-dimensional geometry of the blood sac. Incompressible laminar flow is simulated on the assumption of Newtonian fluid. Blood velocity has a step gradient near the throat of the sac formed by the moving actuator. According to the decrease of the gap size of blood passage, the magnitude of shear stress in the blood is dramatically increased. Numerical solutions show that the maximum value of shear stress in the blood flow in TPLS is relatively smaller than that of the roller type ECLS.

  • Using the spectral data in the 3700 to $10050{\AA}$ wavelength range secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph (HES) at the Lick observatory, we have investigated the expansion velocities and the physical conditions of the elliptical planetary nebula NGC 6803. Various forbidden and permitted lines, e.g. HI, HeI, HeII, [OIII], [NII], [ArIII], and [SII], indicate complicated but systematic physical conditions variation: electron temperatures $T_{\varepsilon}\;{\sim}\;9000$ - 11000 K and electron number densities $N_{\varepsilon}\;{\sim}\;2000$ - $9000\;cm^{-3}$. The line profile analysis of these ions also indicates the systematic change or the acceleration of the expansion velocities in the range of 10 - $22\;km\;s^{-1}$. We show that the velocity gradient and physical condition found in various ions are closely related to the prolate ellipsoidal structure of NGC 6803. The expansion velocity and the ionic abundance of $O^{2+}$ were derived based on the OII and [OIII] lines. In spite of the discrepancy of ionic abundances derived by the two cases and their line profiles, the expansion velocities of them agree well. We find that the ratios of the red to blue line component of the HeII & OII lines are different from those of the [OIII] or other forbidden lines that indicates a possible involvement of emission of HeII & OII lines. This subtle difference and the different physical condition of the lines are likely to be caused by the elongated geometry and the latitude dependence of the emission zone.

  • The basic principle of underwater ram-jet as a unique marine propulsion concept showing vary high cruise speed range(e. g. 80-100 knots) is the thrust production by the transfer of the potential energy of compressed gas to the operating liquid through kinetic mixing process. This paper is aimed to investigate the propulsive efficiency of the nozzle flow in underwater ram-jet at the speed of 80 knots for the buried type vessel. The basic assumption of the theoretical analysis is that mixture of water and air can be treated as incompressible gas. For an optimized nozzle configuration obtained from the performance analysis, preliminary data for performance evaluation are obtained and effects of nozzle inner wall friction, ambient temperature, ambient pressure, water density, gas velocity, bubble radius, flow velocity, diffuser area ratio, mass flow ratio and water velocity gradient are investigated.

  • This study aims to investigating the effect of Schmidt number (${\sigma}_c$) on sediment suspension and hydrodynamics calculation. The range of ${\sigma}_c$ is also studied based on the flux Richardson number ($Ri_f$) and gradient Richardson number ($Ri_g$). Numerical experiments are carried out by 1 dimensional vertical model. Both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are tested under the conditions of pure current and oscillatory flow. The turbulence damping effect due to sediment suspension is examined considering ${\sigma}_c$ as a constant for the damping effect. The results of this study show the consistent effect of ${\sigma}_c$ on sediment suspension regardless of hydrodynamic condition. It is also found that the model overestimates the flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy when the damping effect is not considered. Under the conditions of $Ri_f$ and $Ri_g$ causing density stratification, it is known that the vertical mixing of sediment is reasonably calculated in the range of ${\sigma}_c$ from 0.3 to 0.5.

  • Purpose: Although several reports have described the relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, information about the association between periodontal disease and the progression of degenerative aortic stenosis (AS) is lacking. Therefore, we performed a retrospective, single-center, pilot study to provide insight into this potential association. Methods: Data from 45 consecutive patients (19 men; median age, 83 years) with mild or moderate degenerative aortic stenosis were analyzed for a mean observation period of 3.3±1.9 years. The total amount of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis and titers of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) against periodontal bacteria and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were evaluated. Aortic valve area (AVA), maximal velocity (Vmax), mean pressure gradient (mean PG), and the Doppler velocity index (DVI) were evaluated. The change in each parameter per year ([ParameterLATEST-ParameterBASELINE]/Follow-up Years) was calculated from the retrospective follow-up echocardiographic data (baseline vs. the most recently collected data [latest]). Results: No correlation was found between the concentration of periodontopathic bacteria in the saliva and AS status/progression. The anti-P. gingivalis antibody titer in the serum showed a significant positive correlation with AVA and DVI. Additionally, there was a negative correlation between the anti-P. gingivalis IgG antibody titer and mean PG. The hs-CRP concentration showed positive correlations with Vmax and mean PG. Meanwhile, a negative correlation was observed between the anti-P. gingivalis IgG antibody titer and ΔAVA/year and Δmean PG/year. The hs-CRP concentration showed positive correlations with Vmax and mean PG, and it was significantly higher in patients with rapid aortic stenosis progression (ΔAVA/year <-0.1) than in their counterparts. Conclusions: Our results suggest that periodontopathic bacteria such as A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis are not directly related to the status/progression of degenerative AS. However, inflammation and a lower immune response may be associated with disease progression.

  • The jet pump is being used in many fields for several purposes because of its simple construction and easy operation. The characteristics of the geometrical variables, pressure gradient and velocity distribution of the jet pump are studied using the CFD technique. The flow calculations through a bended nozzle. a mixing chamber and a venturi are presented and phenomenological aspects are discussed. This study solve 3-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the Iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives and 3rd-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms. The Mark-and-cell concept was applied efficiently to solve continuity equation, which is differenced 2nd-order accurate central differenced scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A O-type of grid system is generated inside a nozzle and venturi of the jet pump. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

  • Particle image velocimetry(PIV), a planar measuring technique, is an efficient tool for studying the complicated flow field such as in-cylinder flow, and intake port flow. PIV can be also used for analyzing the integral length scale of turbulence, which is a measure of the size of the large eddies that contain most of the turbulence kinetic energy. In this study, dual color scanning PIV was designed and demonstrated by using a rotating mirror and a beam splitter. This PIV system allowed enlargement of flexibility in the intensity of vectors to be calculated by spatial filtering technique, even in combustion chamber with high velocity gradient and high vorticity$({\sim}1000s^{-1})$. A new color image processing algorithm was developed, which was used to find the direction of particle movement directly from the digital image. These measuring techniques were successfully applied to obtaining the turbulence intensity (~0.1m/s) and the turbulent integral length scale of vorticity(~1mm).
