Development of a Real-time Vehicle Driving Simulator

  • A vehicle driving simulator is a virtual reality device which makes a human being feel as if the one drives a vehicle actually. The driving simulator is effectively used for studying interaction of a driver-vehicle and developing the vehicle system of new concepts. The driving simulator consists of a motion platform, a motion controller, a visual and audio system, a vehicle dynamic analysis system, a vehicle operation system and etc. The vehicle dynamic analysis system supervises overall operation of the simulator and also simulates dynamic motion of a multi-body vehicle model in real-time. In this paper, the main procedures to develop the driving simulator are classified by 4 parts.   • In this paper, we developed a Manta-type AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and analyzed its control performance as well as its dynamic characteristics underwater. The nonlinear motion of equations, which are expressed in terms of hydrodynamic coefficients obtained by various experiments, are used to simulate the motion of a Manta AUV underwater. We applied the sliding-mode theory to control the heading angle and depth of the vehicle, and confirmed the effectiveness of the control algorithm through simulations and sea-trials.

  • This paper presents a novel methodology for estimating vehicle ego-motion, i.e. tri-axis linear velocities and angular velocities by using stereo vision sensor and 2G1Y sensor (longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate). The estimated ego-motion information can be utilized to predict future ego-path and improve the accuracy of 3D coordinate of obstacle by compensating for disturbance from vehicle movement representatively for collision avoidance system. For the purpose of incorporating vehicle dynamic characteristics into ego-motion estimation, the state evolution model of Kalman filter has been augmented with lateral vehicle dynamics and the vanishing point estimation has been also taken into account because the optical flow radiates from a vanishing point which might be varied due to vehicle pitch motion. Experimental results based on real-world data have shown the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in view of accuracy.

  • The objective of this research is to monitor and control the vehicle motion in order to remove out the existing safety risk based upon the human-machine cooperative vehicle control. A new control method is proposed to control the steering wheel of the vehicle to keep the lane. Desired angle of the steering wheel to control the vehicle motion could be calculated based upon vehicle dynamics, current and estimated pose of the vehicle every sample steps. Lateral Vehicle Control Based on Active Flight Control Technology

  • In this paper, a lateral vehicle control using the concept of control configured vehicle (CCV) is presented. The control objectives for the lateral dynamics of a vehicle include the ability to follow a chosen variable without significant motion change in other specified variables. The analysis techniques for decoupling of the aircraft motions are utilized to develop vehicle lateral control with advanced mode. Vehicle lateral dynamic is determined to have the steering input and control torque input. The additional vehicle modes are also defined to using CCV concept. We use right eigenstructure assignment techniques and command generator tracker to design a control law for an lateral vehicle dynamics. The desired eigenvectors are chosen to achieve the desired decoupling (i.e., lateral direction speed and yaw rate). The command generator tracker is used to ensure steady-state tracking of the driver's command. Finally, the developed design is utilized by using the lateral vehicle dynamic with four wheel.

  • This paper presents a engine/brake integrated VDC(Vehicle Dynamic Control) system using neural network algorithm methods for wheel slip and yaw rate control. For stable performance of vehicle, not only is the lateral motion control(wheel slip control) important but the yaw motion control of the vehicle is crucial. The proposed NNPI(Neural Network Proportional-Integral) controller operates at throttle angle to improve the performance of wheel slip. Also, the suggested NNPID controller performs at brake system to improve steering performance. The proposed controller consists of multi-hidden layer neural network structure and PID control strategy for self-learning of gain scheduling. Computer Simulation have been performed to verify the proposed neural network based control scheme of 17 dof vehicle dynamic model which is implemented in MATLAB Simulink.

  • The VDC(Vehicle Dynamic Control) is a control system whose target is to improve stability of a vehicle under lateral motion. A lateral vehicle motion, especially on a slippery road, can lead to a hazardous situation, and the situation can even worsen by the driver`s inappropriate response. In this paper, two VDC systems, a fuzzy-based controller and an LQR-based controller have been developed. The controllers take as input the yaw rate and the sideslip angle of either body or rear wheel, and they yield the direct yaw moment signal by which the vehicle can gain stability during cornering. Simulations have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the control system. The results indicated that the controllers can successfully improve vehicle stability under potentially dangerous driving conditions.

ROAD CROWN, TIRE, AND SUSPENSION EFFECTS ON VEHICLE STRAIGHT-AHEAD MOTION

  • During normal operating conditions, a motor vehicle is constantly subjected to a variety of forces, which can adversely affect its straight-ahead motion performance. These forces can originate both from external sources such as wind and road and from on-board sources such as tires, suspension, and chassis configuration. One of the effects of these disturbances is the phenomenon of vehicle lateral-drift during straight-ahead motion. This paper examines the effects of road crown, tires, and suspension on vehicle straight-ahead motion. The results of experimental studies into the effects of these on-board and external disturbances are extremely sensitive to small changes in test conditions and are therefore difficult to guarantee repeatability. This study was therefore conducted by means of computer simulation using a full vehicle model. The purpose of this paper is to gain further understanding of the straight-ahead maneuver from simulation results, some aspects of which may not be obtainable from experimental study. This paper also aims to clarify some of the disputable arguments on the theories of vehicle straight-ahead motion found in the literature. Tire residual aligning torque, road crown angle, scrub radius and caster angle in suspension geometry, were selected as the study variables. The effects of these variables on straight-ahead motion were evaluated from the straight-ahead motion simulation results during a 100m run in free control mode. Examination of vehicle behavior during straight-ahead motion under a fixed control mode was also carried out in order to evaluate the validity of several disputable arguments on vehicle pull theory, found in the literature. Finally, qualitative comparisons between the simulation results and the test results were made to support the validity of the simulation results.

  • A scheduling technique for the improvement of yaw motion stability in in-wheel motor vehicle is proposed. Normally vehicle velocity is controlled via conventional PID method. When vehicle is encountered with different road conditions on left and right hand sides, unstable yaw motion is induced due to the driving force difference in both wheels. In this paper a scheduling formular for control gain is derived in terms of experimental results to generate proper counter control action. Simulation result reveals its effective performance in yaw control of in-wheel vehicle.
