Methodology for Evaluating Collision Risks Using Vehicle Trajectory Data (개별차량 주행패턴 분석을 통한 교통사고 위험도 분석 기법)

  • An innovative feature of this study is to propose a methodology for evaluating safety performance in real time based on vehicle trajectory data extracted from video images. The essence of evaluating safety performance is to capture unsafe car-following and lane-changing events generated by individual vehicles traveling within video surveillance area. The proposed methodology derived three indices including real-time safety index(RSI) based on the concept of safe stopping distance, time-to-collision(TTC), and the collision energy based on the conservation of momentum. It is believed that outcomes would be greatly utilized in developing a new generation of video images processing(VIP) based traffic detection systems capable of producing safety performance measurements. Relevant technical challenges for such detection systems are also discussed.

  • Ground vehicle borne system which is named RoSSAV(Road Safety Survey and Analysis Vehicle) developed in KICT(Korea Institute of Construction Technology) can collect road geometric data. This system therefore is able to evaluate the road safety and analyze road deficient sections using data collected along the roads. The purpose of this study is to extract road geometric data for 3D road modeling in dangerous road section and The system should be able to quickly provide more accurate data. Various sensors(circular laser scanner, GPS, INS, CCD camera and DMI) are installed in moving object and collect road environment data. Finally, We extract 3d road geometry(center, boundary), road facility and slope using integrated multi-sensor data.

  • In this study, to increase output of road piezoelectric energy harvester, it was made into rack type in which many piezoelectric materials can be installed and load transfer device of the leverage type to transfer vehicle load was made. By paving it in the road, the output characteristics depending on vehicle load and speed were evaluated. Changing vehicle load, harvester output characteristics depending on speed changes were evaluated at the interval of 10 km/h from 10 km/h to 100 km/h. Also, by making a wireless switch and sending wireless signal with output of rack type harvester, whether to receive it was evaluated by distance. It was checked that all switches work up to front-to-back 100 m from harvester.

  • This study was conducted to measure battery's voltage drop in a compact electric vehicle to get driving performance in various driving situations. In the experiment, to evaluate the energy consumption and milage, system performance have measured with changing of the driving speed and the reduction of driving distance when the heater was operating. The battery of the car in this study is lead type storage battery. The driving velocity was changed from 10km/h to 50 km/h with 20km/h intervals and the operating step of the heating device. As results, the electronic consumption rate was maximum at 35 km/h of vehicle speed and if the driver turning the heater at maximum, capacity will lead to 35% of energy consumption increment.

Evaluation of On-Road NOx Emission from a Light Duty Diesel Vehicle using a Portable Emissions Measurement System (이동식 배출가스 측정장비를 이용한 소형 경유 자동차의 실도로 질소산화물 배출특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this research is to quantify the compliance of on-road emission from a light duty diesel vehicle, based on a comparison to emission regulation standard. $NO_x$, CO and THC emissions were measured using a portable device on a selected real-world driving route with a length of approximately 22 km. On-road measurements were repeated by 10 times on a same route to reflect variability in traffic conditions. A test route was divided into 22 road links with length of 1 km to analyze emission results with higher spatial resolution. The average emissions of $NO_x$, CO and THC over total travel distance, which is approximately 220 km, were quantified to be in compliance with emission regulation standards. Under higher spatial resolution, $NO_x$ concentration exceeded a standard in 92 links out of 220 links. The extended time in stop period and the stop-and-go driving cycle were identified as two important reasons for increased $NO_x$ emissions in observed cases. Heavy traffics showed higher $NO_x$ emissions than free flow. These results indicate that the real-world vehicle emissions might exceed the compliance level associate with traffic conditions. Another interesting observation of this research is that the on-road emission characteristics can be independent to the average speed of road links with higher spatial resolution. Variability in on-road emission might not be fully described by solely relying on an average speed, because variability in traffic conditions and road conditions can influence on real-world vehicle emissions.

Detecting and Tracking Vehicles at Local Region by using Segmented Regions Information (분할 영역 정보를 이용한 국부 영역에서 차량 검지 및 추적)

  • The novel vision-based scheme for real-time extracting traffic parameters is proposed in this paper. Detecting and tracking of vehicle is processed at local region installed by operator. Local region is divided to segmented regions by edge and frame difference, and the segmented regions are classified into vehicle, road, shadow and headlight by statistical and geometrical features. Vehicle is detected by the result of the classification. Traffic parameters such as velocity, length, occupancy and distance are estimated by tracking using template matching at local region. Because background image are not used, it is possible to utilize under various conditions such as weather, time slots and locations. It is performed well with 90.16% detection rate in various databases. If direction, angle and iris are fitted to operating conditions, we are looking forward to using as the core of traffic monitoring systems.

  • Recently, navigation system is used to inform users of vehicle location and driving direction, moving distance and so on. This navigation uses GPS sensor for current location determination. The GPS sensor will determinate current coordinates by using triangulation algorithm. This characteristic bring about that the GPS signal is not available in the shadow region such as tunnel and urban canyon. Moreover, Even though the signal is available, inherent positional error rate of the GPS often results in the dislocation of vehicle. To solve, these problems, a new positioning system is proposed in the paper. The System utilizes geomagnetic sensors of smartphone, speed information of CAN of vehicle though bluetooth and WiFi APs for GPS shadow area. The experimental test shadows that the proposed system using multiple data is able to determine the position of vehicle in GPS shadow areas.

  • In this paper, we propose unmanned vehicle based tracking network (UVTN) architecture and algorithms which employ multiple autonomous unmanned ground vehicles (AUGV) to efficiently follow targets in a group. The goal of UVTN is to maximize the service coverage while tracking target nodes for monitoring or providing the network access. In order to achieve this goal, UVTN performs periodic expansion and contraction which results in optimized redistribution of AUGV's in the network. Also, enhanced algorithms such as fast contraction and longest first are also discussed to improve the performance of UVTN in terms of the average coverage ratio and traveled distance. Simulation results show that the proposed UVTN and enhanced algorithms can effectively track the moving target and provide the consistent coverage.

  • Wireless access in vehicle environment (WAVE) communication is currently being researched as core wireless communication technologies for cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). WAVE consists of both vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication, which refers to communication between vehicles, and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication, which refers to the communication between vehicles and road-side stations. V2I has a longer communication range than V2V, and its communication range and reception rate are heavily influenced by various factors such as structures on the road, the density of vehicles, and topography. Therefore, domestic environments in which there are many non-lines of sight (NLOS), such as mountains and urban areas, require optimized communication channel modeling based on research of V2I propagation characteristics. In the present study, the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) was measured on both an experience road and a test road, and the large-scale characteristics of the WAVE communication were analyzed using the data collected to assess the propagation environment of the WAVE-based V2I that is actually implemented on highways. Based on the results of this analysis, this paper proposes a WAVE communication channel model for domestic public roads by deriving the parameters of a dual-slope logarithmic distance implementing a two-ray ground-reflection model.
