This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the aboveground vegetation structure and fine roots of the topsoil (<15m), and thereafter to obtain the regression models for the estimation of the fine roots of the topsoil using the aboveground vegetation values in the burned forest areas, Korea. The FRT (fine roots of the top soil) as well as the aboveground vegetation structure showed spatial variation in the earlier successional stages after forest fire. The fine roots (<2 mm) of the topsoil in the earlier successional stages than the first 3 year after forest fire showed the range from 3 to 166 g $DM/m^2$. The FRT in the naturally regenerated sites and planted sites after forest fire was closely correlated with the vegetation indices, especially lvc, representing the development status of the aboveground vegetation. The FRT in the terrace seeding work sites after forest fire was closely correlated with year elapsed after terrace seeding work. The FRT in the terrace seeding work sites showed the much higher values because of the vigorous growth of grass species than the other sites. In the naturally regenerated sites, the FRT showed the parabola form according to the increment of aboveground vegetation value (Ivc). Although the aboveground vegetation value (Ivc) showed a tendency to increase logarithmically during the secondary succession after forest fire, the estimated fine roots of the topsoil was depicted the parabola form showing the gradual increment until the first 15 years and slight decrease thereafter. Decrease of FRT in the later successional stage showing the high vegetation value may be caused by increment of the woody species contribution to the vegetation value (Ivc). Our results represented that the aboveground vegetation value (Ivc) can be used to the estimation of the fine roots of the topsoil in burned forest areas.
A study was made on the change of vegetation in Yungil area after the erosion control works. The area was divided into three major areas, the devastated land area, the afforested area and the subclimax area. Two groups of plant, i.e., the common species in all area and the different species confined in the subclimax area, were identified by the interspecific correlation analysis based on the positive correlation value at 5% significance level. High similarity among the sites in the afforested region was indicated by the DIF (difference measure) value, lower than 0.33. However, the devastated area and the subclimax area were distinguished completely. The change in species diversity has been extremely low since the erosion control works. Robinia pseudo-acacia was the dominant species in the afforested region and showed an adequate growth status.
Analysis of vegetation on the pavements and under the trees of streets in Seoul city were investigated from July to November 1989. All of the vascular herbs were 9 orders, 13 families, 30 genera, 37 species and 1 forma. Species diversity and evenness index were higher on the pavements than under the trees of streets. Eragrostis multicaulis with C-4 pathway was a dominant species, and next orders of importace values were Eleusine indica(C-4), Digitaria sanguinalis(C-4), Taraxacum officinale(C-3) and Erigeron annus(C-3). On the pavements and under the trees of streets, light intensity and surface temperature were very high, Also, these sites were affected by many kinds of human interferences. Therefore, it was an example of adaptation to specific ecological environments that C-4 plats were more dominant than C-3, growth forms of C-3 plants were rosette or prostrate, and annual or biennial plants were distributed in these studied sites. Generally, fruits types were grains, achens and capsules. Seeds were very small and some had appendages such as pappus.

This study proposes a particular approach to assess information about NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and LAI(Leaf Area Index) from the spectroradiometer and NOAA/AVHRR satellite data. AVHRR data were collected in twelves months over a one year period in 2004. We calculated 10-day composite NDVI using daily composite AVHRR surface reflectance products(1km spatial resolution). The 10-day composite NDVI have a great effect on the plant growth conditions. Considerably, NDVI was increased by developing muscle fiber tissue from April to May. Then the NDVI increased until the August and then decreased until February. The highest month was at August and the lower month was at December. The difference NDVI analysis using December and another months data was conducted, the results were provided information on the variation of vegetation coverage. The result suggest that a relationship established between the LAI and NDVI in 2004.

Many applications in the areas of agricultural, hydrological and environmental resource management require data over very large areas and with a high imaging frequency - monitoring crop growth, water stress, seasonal wetland flooding and natural vegetation development. This precludes the use of fine resolution data (Landsat, Spot) on the grounds of cost, accessibility and low imaging frequency. Meteorological satellites have the potential to fill this need, given their very wide spatial coverage, and high repeat imaging. The Remote Sensing Unit (RSU) at the Zambia Meteorological Department routinely receives, processes and archives imagery from both Meteosat and NOAA AVHRR satellites. Here I wish to present some examples of applications of these data sets that arise from the RSU work - relationships between rainfall and vegetation development as assessed by satellite, derived information and seasonal patterns of flooding in the Barotse floodplain and the Kafue flats. I also wish to outline ways in which a more widespread use of this data by the Zambian institutions canbe achieved.
Soil moisture is a crucial variable in research works of hydrology, meteorology and plant sciences. Adequate soil moisture is essential for plant growth; excesses and deficits of soil moisture must be considered in agricultural practices. There are already several remote sensing methods used for monitoring soil moisture, such as thermal inertia, vegetation water-supplying index, crop water stress index and multi-factor regression. In this paper, an improved method has been discussed which is based on the thermal inertia. We analyzed the problems of monitoring soil moisture using satellites at first, and then put forward an simplified method which directly uses land surface temperature differences to measure soil moisture. Also we have taken the influence of vegetation into account, and import NDVI into the model. The method was used in the study of soil moisture in Heilongjiang Province, China, and we draw the conclusion by the experiments that the model can evidently increase the precision of monitoring soil moisture.
This study aims to develop and commercialize a soundproof wall capable of planting at the urban ecological. The vegetative soundproof wall developed in the study showed highly superb structural test results for sound absorption coefficients and met the quality standards in the sound-absorbing performance test. Its structure is systemized to supply water to soils and plant roots inside the planting basis with rainwater running down the inclined planes near the planting basis in the front of the vegetation panel. It allows for sporadic water supply for about 30 days of drought. The test results show that the plants continued favorable growth and development in leaves, stems, and roots, making the vegetative soundproof plate a product capable of reacting to climate environment changes.
Precise application of topdressing nitrogen (N) fertilizer is indispensible for securing high yield and good quality of rice and minimizing N losses to the environment as well. For precise N management, growth and nitrogen nutrition status (NNS) should be diagnosed rapidly and accurately. The objective of the study was to evaluate the applicability of vegetation index (VI) calculated from hyperspectral canopy reflectance measurement and SPAD reading to nondestructive in situ diagnosis of growth and NNS of rice. Canopy reflectance, SPAD reading, growth parameters, and NNS characteristics were measured from various N treatments to evaluate the relationships among them for two cropping seasons from 2001 to 2002. The correlation coefficient of VIs with variables of growth and NNS increased positively as rice canopy became more closed. Regardless of growth stages, VIs had significantly high correlations with LAI, shoot dry weight (DW), shoot N content and nitrogen nutrition index (NNI). Those correlation coefficients increased steadily before heading stage as rice grew up. However, tiller number and leaf N concentration showed significantly high correlations with VIs only at and after panicle initiation stage (PIS). Among the VIs, RVIgreen had significantly higher correlation with the measured parameters than the other VIs: it showed correlation coefficients greater than 0.8 with leaf and shoot N concentration and DW, and much higher coefficients greater than 0.9 with LAI, shoot N content, and NNI. At LAI of below 2.5, VIs had non-significant or low correlations with the growth and NNS indicators due to the background effects. SPAD reading had significantly high correlation with leaf N concentration and NNI at each growth stage. In addition, it had significant correlations with variables of growth and NNS at PIS and booting stage, particularly, at booting stage. Though SPAD reading had a significantly high correlation value at a given growth stage in each year, it showed very weak relationship with variables of growth and NNS when pooled across growth stages and years. In conclusion, RVIgreen was found to be the most reliable VI to estimate the growth and NNS of rice around at PIS, but SPAD reading had much limitations.
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been used to measure and monitor plant growth, vegetation cover, and biomass from multispectral satellite data. It is also a valuable index in forest applications, providing forest resource information. In this research, an approach for monitoring forest change using MODIS NDVI time series data is explored. NDVI difference-based approaches for a specific point in time have possible accuracy problems and are lacking in monitoring long-term forest cover change. It means that a multi-time NDVI pattern change needs to be considered. In this study, an efficient methodology to consider long-term NDVI pattern is suggested using a harmonic model. The suggested method reconstructs MODIS NDVI time series data through application of the harmonic model, which corrects missing and erroneous data. Then NDVI pattern is analyzed based on estimated values of the harmonic model. The suggested method was applied to 49 NDVI time series data from Aug. 21, 2009 to Sep. 6, 2011 and its usefulness was shown through an experiment.

On-site remote sensing technique by using single lens reflex(SLR) digital camera will be expected as the useful tool for the vegetation measurement field such as a crop growth management, the monitoring of revegetation slope and the evaluation of environment. We reviewed the availability of the vegetation measurement using a digital camera which is sailed for general-purpose. As a result, we could analysis relationship with the illuminance of image plane and incidence energy of multitemporal observation images by doing gamma correction and exposure compensation. And also, we proposed the model formulas for the correction of influences of capturing angle and illuminance. In addition, we obtained high correlation of normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) between digital camera and spectral photometer.
