  • In past, transformer connection study was concentrated on efficiency improvement and life time broadening. But environmental side began to become important recently. In existing, quick transaction of mineral oil used to insulation oil of transformer is possibility to be difficult and causes environmental pollution in case of was outpoured and there is worry of fire occurrence. Accordingly, nonflammable performance becomes many interest in excellent vegetable oil because ignition point is high than mineral oil and environment friendly material. But, vegetable oil is cooling of transformer and insulation problem of insulating paper for cause of insulation oil special quality. Therefore, in this paper, special quality of vegetable oil that there are being a lot of mineral oil and the latest interest examined about problem and consideration item to be solved to analyzed comparison and applies vegetable oil to transformer for electric power.

  • In recent years, environmental concerns have been raised on the use of poorly biodegradable fluids in electrical apparatus in regions where spills from leaks and equipment failure could contaminate the surroundings. The vegetable insulation oils are highly biodegradable, have negligible effect on the environment, human health and ecosystem. Therefore, to assure their safe use in electrical power systems, it may require some processing and modification to improve some of their physical, chemical, thermal and electrical properties. This paper provides a comparative results of the electrical breakdown properties of several vegetable insulation oils and mineral oil to use as dielectric fluid in environmental-friendly pole transformer. Also, the electrical breakdown property of the Nomex and kraft insulation papers in vegetable insulation oil is examined.

  • Starting from the distribution transformer, the insulation oil for the oil immersed power transformer is being used to convert the vegetable oil from the existing mineral oil. Vegetable oil is better in temperature characteristics and insulation performance, is not toxic, and has better biodegradable characteristic than that of mineral oil. In order to investigate the corona inception voltage and dieclectic charateristics of the two insulating oils, three oil immersed transformers using mineral oil and vegetable oil were made and thermal cyclic aged. In this paper, the changes in the corona discharge inception voltage, chemical and electrical properties of the two sampled insulating oils from the transformers had been studied.

  • Electrical insulation is one of the most important part in a high voltage apparatus. Recently, researchers are interested in the environmental friendly vegetable oil from environmental viewpoint. Accelerated aging transformer insulating material in vegetable oil was compared to that of mineral oil. Accelerated aging oil samples produced in the oven at $140^{\circ}C$ for 500, 1000, 1500, 2000hours. And Real transformer insulation oils samples of vegetable oil and mineral oil were aged by thermal cycles repeating from $30^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Samples were analyzed at 42, 63, 93, 143, 190, 240, 300 cycles. The mineral and vegetable insulating oils were investigated for breakdown voltage, water content, total acid number, viscosity, volume resistivity, insulating paper and oil permittivity, and dissolved gas analyses. The breakdown voltage of the vegetable insulating oil is higher than that found for the mineral oil; the accelerated aging progress decreased the breakdown voltage. The vegetable oil had a higher water saturation than the mineral oil; the vegetable oil has the superior water characteristics and breakdown voltage. And high viscosity of vegetable oil, care has to be taken, especially when designing the cooling system for a large transformer.

  • In recent years, environmental concerns have been raised on the use of poorly biodegradable fluids in electrical apparatus in regions where spills from leaks and equipment failure could contaminate the surroundings. The newly invented vegetable insulating oil is highly biodegradable and have negligible impact on the environment, human health and the ecosystem. For development of the environmental-friendly pole transformer using vegetable insulating oil, the dielectric constructions of the pole transformer were discussed in this paper. Depending on the dielectric constructions, the AC breakdown characteristics of the Nomex insulating papers and the vegetable insulating oil were studied by simulated electrode systems. Based on the experimental results, the maximum design stress($E_{max}$) for insulation design of the environmental-friendly pole transformer were suggested.

  • Partial discharge (PD) detection plays a major role in the life time assessment of liquid insulation in power transformers. Many research works are being carried out to replace conventional mineral oil insulation in transformers by vegetable oils. It is necessary to understand the PD characteristics of vegetable oils before recommending them as an alternate for mineral oil. In this paper, the breakdown strength and PD characteristics of palm and corn oil were investigated in both unaged and thermally aged conditions. Laboratory experiments were performed as per IEC test procedures. PD signals were measured using wide band detection system. Phase resolved PD pattern of vegetable oils and mineral oil were compared. Effect of increase in voltage stress on the PD pattern of palm and corn oil were studied. Time and frequency domain analysis of PD pulses at needle-plane electrode configuration was carried out. Statistical analysis of PD pattern i.e. skewness and shape parameter variations with respect to applied thermal stress were also carried out. From the results, it is observed that palm and corn oils have better breakdown strength and PD characteristics even under long-term thermal stress and hence they can be used for power transformer applications.

  • Mineral oil has been widely used as an insulating oil for electrical transformers for a long time, but the necessity of employing new insulation oil such as vegetable oil has been increased due to urgent needs for the biodegradability when it leaks and also for the thermal stability at a higher operation temperature. Although specific periods are required between the production and consumption, there are still short of the data to prove the insulation oils' storage stability depending upon various circumstances and their resources. Thus, this paper demonstrates the insulation oils' oxidation characteristics of both mineral and vegetable oils when each was exposed to different environments for 12 weeks. From this test, some properties including total acid number, water content and dielectric breakdown were changed under specific conditions and resources. Vegetable oils showed higher hydrophilicity and water saturation than those of mineral oils due to their molecular compositions. Under sunlight exposure condition, all insulation oils oxidized and changed their properties when exposing to the direct light, regardless of the resource used.

  • A hermetically sealed oil transformer is designed by applying expanding function of the tank due to the volume changes of the insulation oil according to the temperature rises. When the insulation oil expands, an increase in the volume of the corrugated fin prevents a pressure rise of the transformer. For a wind turbine transformer, a vegetable-oil-immersed transformer has the advantages of excellent biodegradation and fire-resistant properties like an exceptionally high fire point. When vegetable oil is substituted for mineral oil, however, the maximum winding temperature rises because of the decrease in the internal circulation flow rate resulting from the variations of the oil's physical characteristics, such as density and viscosity. The purpose of this study is to develop a hermetically sealed vegetable oil transformer that can be applied in a wind turbine and to analyze the thermal stability of the active part of the transformer to deal with pressure variations due to the temperature changes. In addition, thermal tests for the vegetable oil transformer have been performed, and the measured values are compared with the analysis results.
