  • Three groups of wethers viz. Jamunapari ♂$\times$Black Bengal ♀ (JBB), Selected Black Bengal ♂$\times$Selected Black Bengal ♀ (SBB) and Random Black Bengal ♂$\times$Random Black Bengal ♀ (RBB) of 1 year old were evaluated for pre-slaughter traits and carcass characteristics. The correlations between pre-slaughter traits and carcass traits were computed. It was found that the preslaughter weights of JBB and SBB were almost similar in yielding hot and chilled carcass as well as dressing percentage (DP). RBB wethers were lighter (p<0.05) than JBB and SBB in pre- and post-slaughter weights and also inferior (p<0.05) in DP. SBB wethers were found to produce more visceral fat compared to JBB and RBB. Other variety meats appeared erratic in yield.l. Correlations were compared by Z statistic among three genetic groups and the value of Z did not differ (p>0.05) between groups.

  • Maximum intensity projection (MIP) is a common visualization technique in medical imaging system. A typical method to improve the performance of MIP is empty space leaping, which skips unnecessary area. This research proposes a new method to improve the existing empty space leaping. In order to skip more regions, we introduce a variety of acceleration strategies that use some tolerance given by the user to take part in image quality loss. Each proposed method shows various image quality and speed, and this study compares them to select the best one. Experimental results show that it is most efficient to add a constant tolerance function when the image quality required by the user is low. Conversely, when the user required image quality is high, a function with a low tolerance of volume center is most effective. Applying the proposed method to general MIP visualization can generate a relatively high quality image in a short time.

  • In order to determine the quality of Citrus unshiu(medium cultivar of satsuma mandarin) produced in Cheju, citrus fruits sampled at sorting places and harvested directly on citrus tree in south and north area of Cheju were analyzed. The fruits were grown in size till early of November, and soluble solids were increased continuously after that. Compared with the quality of citrus fruits as a factor of soluble solids, firmness, total sugar, pH, and color index, the optimum harvest periods were supposed to be reasonable from early of December for C. unshiu Marc. var. yonezawa and C. unshiu Marc. var. hayashi, Fruit weights and peel thickness had a linear correlation with increasing fruit size, but soluble solids and acid contents had not a correlation. The selection of C. unshiu variety was needed to determine by the properties of storage.

  • Support vector machine (SVM) has a strong theoretical foundation and also achieved excellent empirical success. It has been widely used in a variety of pattern recognition applications. Unfortunately, SVM also has the drawback that it is sensitive to outliers and its performance is degraded by their presence. In this paper, a new outlier detection method based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed for a robust SVM. The proposed method parallels the GA-based feature selection method and removes the outliers that would be considered as support vectors by the previous soft margin SVM. The proposed algorithm is applied to various data sets in the UCI repository to demonstrate its performance.

  • Subpopulations of nucleotides that bind specifically to a variety of proteins have been isolated from a population of random sequence RNA/DNA molecules. Roughly one in $10^{13}$ random sequence RNA/DNA molecules folds in such a way as to create a specific binding site for small ligands. Since the development of in vitro selection procedure, more than 50 nucleic acid ligands (aptamers) have been isolated. These molecules are very useful for the study of molecular recognition between nucleic acid and protein/organic compound. In addition to these basic studies this method gives us a dream to produce new drugs against several diseases. We focused on several aptamers which specifically binds to trypsin-like serine proteases (thrombin, human neutrophil elastase, activated protein C and NS3 protease of human hepatitis C virus) and want to introduce their structural characteristics and some functions.

  • This paper reviews three commercial softwares for wind climate data analysis in wind resource assessment; WAsP/Observed Wind Climate, WindRose and Windographer. Windographer is evaluated as the best software because of its variety of input data format, analysis functions, easiness of user interface, etc. For a quantitative understanding of uncertainty depending on software selection, a benchmark is carried out with the met-mast observation dataset at the Gimnyeong Wind Turbine Performance Test Site. It is found that Weibull parameter calculation and air density correction have a dependency on the software so that such uncertainty should be considered when an analysis software is selected. It is confirmed that annual energy production calculated by WAsP using a statistical table of frequency of occurrence may have some error compared to a time-series calculation method used by the other softwares.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose the effective guidance of Quality Circle(QC) activities. Since 1975, variety of organizations in Korea have widely implemented QC activities for their management systems. The industries have enthusiastically used QC activities and were influenced from them. However, the academics were less interested in this subject, as a result, there were no systematic guidances for QC activities. Thus, in this paper, the effective guidance for QC activities were suggested which were based on the survey from QC proceedings presented in the companies, in the local areas and the national wide contests. As a result, the first main issue is to pick repeated mistakes up during the process period such as unmatched the causes and effects relations in characteristics diagrams, improper selection of important control items in Pareto diagram and so on. Secondly, how to overcome statistics and use them for QC activities. Thirdly, to remind team members about Quality Control 7 tools. Finally, Minitab(Release-13) software has been found that it is not matched with using Korean Standards(KS).

  • This paper deals with technology relevance analysis, which measures technological dependency between needs technology and its component technology as well as between needs technologies. The two-round survey was carried out: In the first round, a wide range of needs technologies in construction and building industry were identified and classified to meet a variety of social needs which were anticipated in the near future of Korea. In the second, relevance between needs technology and its component technologies was checked by some 120 experts. Based on the survey results, the individual relevances among needs technologies were computed. Finally the ranking of needs technologies in construction industry was set according to the degree of technology relevance. This relevance is to be used as one of criteria for the selection of national R&D projects which the Ministry of Construction and Transportation plans to promote in the next five years.

  • Seeing inadequate disinfection and unhygenic condition in rearing area, use of disease resistant silkworm variety is the best option. In order to this, an attempt has been made to develop the resistance to Bombyx mori densonucleosis virus (BmDNV-2) into a susceptible silkworm breed Zhenon1 by cross breeding with a resistant silkworm breed SU12 and exposing the subsequent generations to BmDNV-2 followed by the selection of individuals from the surviving batches. After seven generation the evolved DNV-2 resistant strain showed the significantly higher resistance to BmDNV-2 than control Zhenon1. The economic characters of both of the breeds were almost on par.

  • Protein immobilization on a gold surface plays an important role in the usefulness of biosensors that utilize gold-coated surfaces such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), etc. For developing high performance biosensors, it is necessarily required that immobilized proteins must remain biologically active. Loss of protein activity and maintenance of its stability on transducer surfaces is directly associated with the choice of immobilization methods, affecting protein-protein interactions. During the past decade, a variety of strategies have been extensively developed for the effective immobilization of proteins in terms of the orientation, density, and stability of immobilized proteins on analytical devices operating on different principles. In this review, recent advances and novel strategies in protein immobilization technologies developed for biosensors are briefly discussed, thereby providing an useful information for the selection of appropriate immobilization approach.
