The response of seventy-five rice cultivars to ozone (O$_3$) were tested in the open-top chamber with ozone producing and monitoring system to determine the varietal difference of resistance to $O_3$ stress. Ozone was produced by electrostatic discharge in oxygen and was monitored by UV absorption ozone analyzer. Difference in response of rice to ozone was more clearly appeared on rice plants treated for 2 to 4 hours at 0.3 ppm concentration of $O_3$. Varietal resistance of rice to ozone was more distinctly classified at 21- to 35-day seedlings compared with 14-day rice plants. Most of indica and Tongil(indica$\times$japonica) type rice cultivars were more resistant than that of japonica cultivars based on the leaf injury to $O_3$. Eight Korean cultivars belong to japonica groups showed highly resistant reaction to $O_3$. Ozone exposure during booting stage caused lower grain fertility than exposures during seedling, maximum tillering and heading stages of rice.
Fifty rice varieties were tested for alkali digestibility of milled rice grain at four different KOH levels, and twenty-four varieties selected were tested again for alkali digestibility at different degrading times and KOH levels. Gelatinization rate at several heating times and heating temperatures, and water absorption rate at 21$^{\circ}C$ and 77$^{\circ}C$ water temperatures were observed using rice samples of twenty-four varieties to clarify the relationship between alkali digestibility response, gelatinization rate and water absorption rate. Varietal difference of ADV in Japonica and Tongil tye rices was biggest at KOH 1.2%, but it was better to test at KOH 1.2% and 1.4% levels to know the exact alkali digestibility response of rice varieties. Rice varieties tested could be classified into three groups, low, intermediate and high, based on their alkali digestibility response at four KOH levels, and most of Korean cultivated rice varieties were belonged to intermediate or high ADV group. Varietal variation was also found in alkali degrading response at different soaking times in alkali solution. Low ADV varietal group showed higher gelatinization temperature and needed longer heating time for complete gelatinization compared with intermediate or high ADV group. Same trends was found between intermediate and high ADV groups, but varietal variation in the same ADV group was also found in gelatinization temperature and heating time needed for complete gelatinization of rice grain. Water absorption rate of low ADV group was lower than intermediate or high ADV group both at 21$^{\circ}C$ and 77$^{\circ}C$ water temperatures, and intermediate ADV group showed lower absorption rate than high ADV group only in initial water absorption stage at 21$^{\circ}C$.
The viviparity of 28 rice varieties was tested at 25 days after heading(DAH), 35DAH, and 45DAH in the laboratory and field condition for 12 days. The incubation temperature was 20/l$0^{\circ}C$ (day/night), 25/15$^{\circ}$C$ and 30/20$^{\circ}$C$ in the laboratory test, and under field water conditions in the field test. The biggest varietal difference of viviparity was found in the laboratory test when examined at 45DAH with the 6-day incubation under 25/15$^{\circ}$C$ . At this conditions the mean viviparous ratio was 32.1 % with the range of 53.9 and the variance of 259.5. In the field test, the significant varietal difference in the viviparity was also found in the lodging treatment at 45 DAH for 6 days. Correlation coefficient analysis between the field and laboratory tests was highly significant from 4 days after incubation at 45 DAH and after 6-day incubation at 35 DAH, and correlation coefficient was higher as incubation days in the laboratory and submerged days under field water became longer. Considering the correlation between the field and laboratory tests, varietal difference of viviparity and convenience of testing, the laboratory test at 45 DAH for 6-day incubation under 25/15$^{\circ}$C$ was the most efficient evaluation method for the viviparity of rice cultivar.
This study was conducted to know how low temperature response of rice varieties is available for breeding lines adapted to cold weather. Some agronomic characters related to cold tolerance were evaluated for 188 varieties including three varietal types of Japonica, Tongil, and Indica. Cold tolerance of Japonica and Indica type varieties varied in leaf discoloration, heading delay, reduction of culm length, panicle number, spikelet number, panicle exsertion, spikelet fertility, and phenotypic acceptability at maturity, while Tongil type varieties were susceptible in most agronomic characters. In leaf discoloration, most Japonica type varieties were highly tolerant, while Indica type varieties showed various responses from tolerant to susceptibility. Not significant difference among three varietal types was observed on reduction of panicle number and spikelet number due to low temperature.
To investigate varietal differences of anther size, pollen shape, pollen fertility and other agronomic characters under low temperature condition. twenty rice varieties (5 Tongil and 15 Japonica type) were treated at 19$^{\circ}C$ water temperature from booting to heading stage. There was varietal difference of low temperature response which was indicated by the delayed heading, the shortening of culm and panicle length. and the decrease of grain fertility and yield potential resulted from cooling treatment at booting stage. The varieties with low fertility damaged by the low temperature treatment at booting stage showed low pollen density per anther. small or abnormal anthers and pollen, and many sterile pollens. Anther length was correlated significantly with the number of pollens per anther and pollen fertility.
Flowering of the sunflower varieties tested was accelerated by growing in the green-house as well as by short-day treatments at 8 or 12 hours. It may be concluded that the sun-flower plant is sensitive to short-day condition. Significant difference was observed between the , early and late maturing varieties in the flowering response to temperature treatment. Varietal difference, however, was not recognizable in the flowering response to the short-day treatment.
The effects of propanil, MCPA; 2, 4 5-T and silvex on the numder of new root and tiller on Taichung Native 1, Caloro, PI 245717 and Bluebonnet 50 by root administration and foliar spray at 10 levels of concentration were investigated. Phenoxy herbicides changed the growth pottern in the way of increased number of tillers and new roots rather than plant height or root length. It was suggested that MCPA is only possible to increase tillering around applicable range. Silvex stimulated tillering at higher level than that required to stimulate new root formation. Varietal response on herbicides were different along with herbicide feeding part. There was trends that the higher nitrogen response varieties also have a greater response to stimulating effect of herbicide. Propanil had no effect on growth and no injury even about 20 times of higher concentration of phenoxy herbicide.
Multivariate statistical procedures were used to analyse data on the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of four varienties of rice straw after treatment with 4% NaOH solution, 4% urea solution or distilled water (control) for 48 hours. For each treatment, stepwise discriminant analysis identified the variables which maximized differences between varieties and the eigenvectors from principal component analysis quantified the contribution of these criterion variables to varietal differences. The overall response of varieties to chemical treatment was demonstrated qualitatively, by cluster analysis, and quantitatively, from the magnitude of the principal component scores. The analysis revealed that the urea and control treatments elicited the same response whereas NaOH had the greatest effect on the poorest straw variety. Similar analyses conducted on the botanical fractions of the varieties showed that the relative response of the inflorescence, stem, leaf blade and leaf sheath fractions was not altered by chemical treatment.
