Semi-active control systems have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years because these systems can operate on battery power alone, proving advantageous during seismic events when the main power source of the structure may likely fail. The behavior of semi-active devices is often highly non-linear and requires suitable and efficient control algorithm. This paper presents the comparative study and performance of variable semi-active friction dampers by using recently proposed predictive control law with direct output feedback. In this control law, the variable slip force of semi-active variable friction damper is kept slightly lower than the critical friction force, which allows the damper to remain in the slip state during an earthquake, resulting in improved energy dissipation capability. This control algorithm is able to produce a continuous and smooth slip forces for a variable friction damper. The numerical examples include a structure controlled with multiple variable semi-active friction dampers and with multiple passive friction dampers. A parameter, gain multiplier defined as the ratio of damper force to critical damper control force, is investigated under four different real earthquake ground motions, which plays an important role in the present control algorithm of the damper. The numerically evaluated optimum parametric value is considered for the analysis of the structure with dampers. The numerical results of the variable friction dampers show better performance over the passive dampers in reducing the seismic response of structures.

State feedback with integral control for a variable air volume(VAV) unit which is recently taken notice of for the energy efficiency and saving in the building is studied to investigate the performance of the digital control methodology for the possible practical application. The digital controller which acquires the targat zone temperature and the air flow rate of the supplied air to the zone controls the opening of the damper in the VAV unit. Simulation results are performed for the conditions including reference changes and external thermal variations. In the simulation. simplified conditioned zone and the damper actuator modelling is considered. and relationships between controller gain Parameters and the system dynamics are investigated.
This paper proposes LQ optimal controller design method based on the modal decomposition. Here, the design problem of linear time-invariant systems is considered by using pencil model. The mathematical model based on matrix pencil is one of the most general representation of the system. By adding some conditions the model can be reduced to traditional system models. In pencil model, the state feedback is considered as an algebraic constraint between the state variable and the control input variable. The algebraic constraint on pencil model is called purely static mode, and is included in infinite mode. Therefore, the information of the constant gain controller is included in the purely static mode of the augmented system which consists of the plant and the control conditions. We pay attention to the coordinate transformation matrix, and LQ optimal controller is derived from the algebraic constraint of the internal variable. The proposed method is applied to the numerical examples, and the results are verified.
In order to suppress the wind-induced vibrations of the Canton Tower, a pair of active mass driver (AMD) systems has been installed on the top of the main structure. The structural principal directions in which the bending modes of the structure are uncoupled are proposed and verified based on the orthogonal projection approach. For the vibration control design in the principal X direction, the simplified model of the structure is developed based on the finite element model and modified according to the field measurements under wind excitations. The AMD system driven by permanent magnet synchronous linear motors are adopted. The dynamical models of the AMD subsystems are determined according to the open-loop test results by using nonlinear least square fitting method. The continuous variable gain feedback (VGF) control strategy is adopted to make the AMD system adaptive to the variation in the intensity of wind excitations. Finally, the field tests of free vibration control are carried out. The field test results of AMD control show that the damping ratio of the first vibration mode increases up to 11 times of the original value without control.
The structural vibration suppression with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was widely studied recently. However, the literature seldom concerned with the vibration control on flow-induced vibration using active constrained layer. In this paper the wind induced vibration of cantilevered beam is analyzed and suppressed by using random theory together with a velocity feedback control strategy. The piezoelectric material and frequency dependent viscoelastic layer are used to achieve effective active damping in the vibration control. The transverse displacement and velocity in time and frequency domains, as well as the power spectral density and the mean-square value of the transverse displacement and velocity, are formulated under wind pressure at variable control gain. It is observed from the numerical results that the wind induced vibration can be significantly suppressed by using a small outside active voltage on the constrained layer.

In this paper, attitude control laws for simultaneous pointing of multiple spacecrafts are considered under a formation flying scenario. The basic approach lies in adaptive feedback gains using relative attitude information or maneuver time approximation for coordinated attitude control. Each control law is targeted to balancing mean motion or to correcting system response to the slowest satellite. The control gain adaptation is constructed by two approaches. The first one is using variable damping gain to manipulate speed of a fast system response, and the second one uses alternate natural frequency of the system under control. The validity and stability of the proposed approaches are examined analytically and tested through numerical simulations.

This paper considers the problem of adaptive fault-tolerant guaranteed cost controller design via dynamic output feedback for a class of linear time-delay systems against actuator faults. A new variable gain controller is established, whose gains are tuned by the designed adaptive laws. More relaxed sufficient conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), compared with the corresponding fault-tolerant controller with fixed gains. A real application example about river pollution process is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this paper, the single-phase static VAR compensator (SVC) is applied to regulate and stabilize the generated terminal voltage of the single-phase self-excited induction generator (single-phase SEIG) driven by a variable-speed prime mover (VSPM) under the conditions of the independent inductive load variations and the prime mover speed changes The conventional fixed gain PI controller-based feedback control scheme is employed to adjust the equivalent capacitance of the single-phase SVC composed of the fixed excitation capacitor FC in parallel with the thyristor switched capacitor TSC and the thyristor controlled reactor TCR The feedback closed-loop terminal voltage responses in the single-phase SEIG coupled by a VSPM with different inductive passive load disturbances using the single-phase SVC with the PI controller are considered and discussed herem. A VSPM coupled the single-phase SEIG prototype setup is established. Its experimental results are illustrated as compared with its simulation ones and give good agreements with the digital simulation results for the single-phase SEIG driven by a VSPM, which is based on the SVC voltage regulation feedback control scheme.
This paper proposes a gain scheduled control technique using time-delay for the nonlinear system with plant uncertainties and unexpected disturbances. The time delay-based gain scheduled control depends on a direct estimation of a function representing the effect of uncertainties. The information from the estimation is used to cancel the unknown dynamics and the unexpected disturbances simultaneously. The proposed estimation scheme with a finite convergence time is formulated in order to estimate the unborn scheduling variable variation. In other words, the time delay-based gain scheduled control uses the past observation of the system's response and the control input to directly modify the control actions rather than to adjust the controller gains or to identify system parameters. It has a simple structure so as to minimize the computational burden. The benefits of this proposed scheme are demonstrated in the simulation of an electromagnetic suspension system with plant uncertainties and external disturbances, and the proposed controller is compared with the conventional state feedback controller.
This paper studies a variable structure adaptive model following control system which can control a plant in which the parameters of the controlled plant can not be estimated because they vary with time and in which the controlled plant has noise. The values of the feedback gain matrices for given states are obtained the equivalent control law, and the adaptive controller has been designed using the adaptive mechanism which switches the matrices. The adaptive controller minimizes the state error vector, that is, the difference between the state vector of the model and the state vector of the controlled plant. A controlled plant which has time varying parameters, a controlled plant which has only noise, and a controlled plant which has both have been controlled by the designed adaptive controller. The continuous single input-output system has been analysed by computer. This control system may be used to control practical systems by the addition of a microcomputer.
