Sorption studies involving the sorption of n-propanol by an Amorphous Nylon(Nylon 6I/6T) were carried out as a function of sorbate vapor activity at $23^{\circ}C$. Vapor activity levels from 0.035 to 0.91 were investigated to evaluate the concentration dependency of sorption mechanism. Sorption behavior of propanol by Nylon 6I/6T showed distinctive two mode sorption phenomena as a function of Vapor activity. At Vapor activity levels below a=0.11, equilibrium sorption was achieved within a short period of time(less than 20hrs), which can be interpreted as following a Fickian diffusion model. A Langmuir-Flory-Muggins Dual Mode Sorption model can also be applied at these concentration levels. However, for Vapor activities above a=0.11, the sorption process appeared to be non-Fickian and resulted in a lack of equilibrium being attained.
Water vapor sorption of corn starch in various protective film coated capsules in 100% RH chamber for 14 days were as follows: The percent of water vapor sorption were 28.63% in uncoated capsule, 25.16% in hydroxy propylcellulose(HPC) coated capsule, 15.59% in 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine-methyl acrylated-methacrylic acid (MPM) coated capsule and 15.50% in polyvinyl acetal diethyl amino acetate(AEA) coated capsule. 2. Water vapor sorotion of magnesium trisilicate in various protective film coated capsules in 100% RH chamber for 14 days were as follows. The percent of water vapor sorption were 13.91% in uncoated capsule, 13.30% in HPC-coated capsule, 10.87% in MPM-caated capsule and 9.9% in AEA-coated capsule. 3. Water vapor sorption of magnesium carbonate in various protective film coated capsules in 100% RH chamber for 14 days were as follows: The percent of water vapor sorption were 12.48% in uncoated capsule, 10.72% in HPC-coated capsule, 8.10% in MPM coated capsule and 7.8% in AEA-coated capsule. 4. MPM-coated capsules and AEA-canted capsules were mere effective to protect water vapor sorption than HPC-coated capsules.
The study aimed at the theoretical analysis of vapor sorption properties of, pp.rmaking fibers. Water vapor affinity and sorption thermodynamic properties of fiber constituents were evaluated based on Henry's law and Hildebrand's solubility theory. Theoretical equilibrium moisture content(ThEMC) on fiber surface was estimated using functional group contribution. Crystallinity of cellulose in fiber significantly controlled the water vapor solubility. Comparisons of the measured equilibrium moisture content data and the estimated ThEMC data coincidently suggested the fact that crystallinity of cellulose in fibers was around 60% to 70%. Carbohydrates constituents including amorphous cellulose and hemicellulose in fibers showed higher vapor solubility than lignin molecules. High correlation existed between ThEMC and vapor solubility as well as between ThEMC and solubility parameter. In the thermodynamic analysis on water-vapor sorption process in fibers, the sorption enthalpy increased as RH increased, whereas sorption entropy and free energy decreased with increasing RH.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the mixing ratio and water vapor sorption property of charcoal-based loess composites for furniture & building materials with environmental friendly. Charcoal-based loess composite can be easily made by blending method with water. But the composites had much brittle fracture pattern with the increase of charcoal content. That is due to the lack of loess that takes linkage role of composites. In water vapor sorption properties, adsorption ability of charcoal was about six times higher than that of loess. Therefore, vapor sorption ability was maximum at the mixture ratio of charcoal 80% and loess 20%. It is considered that wood charcoal based inorganic composite materials can be used for various purposes as a building interior & exterior and furniture members.
The effect of propylene oxide, butylene oxide, furan resin, and vinylpyrrolidinone in controlling wood dimensional stability have been examined. Wood in the green or ovendry condition was treated with various chemical treatments using a vacuum-pressure procedure, and treated specimens were tested for tangential sweelling, moisture gain, and changes in sorption hysteresis. Results' indicate that propylene oxide, and butylene oxide enhanced with the crosslin king agent trimethylol propane trimethacrylate and applied to ovendry wood were the most efficient chemical treatments in controlling tangential sweeling caused by liquid water or water vapor, and in reducing water vapor adsorption. The sorption behavior of treated wood as depicted by the ratios of sorption was "very favorable" in most instances. In the particular case of furan resin treatments, ratios of sorption were improved from 25 to 100 percent as compared to those of untreated wood.
The unique feature of pervaporation is the mass transfer from a liquid phase to a vapor phase through a non-porous polymeric membrane. When a liquid mixture is brought into contact with a membrane at one side, it is sorbed into the membrane. Due to a driving force applied across the membrane, the sotbed liquid molecules permeate through the membrane and evaporate at the downstream side of the membrane. In pervaporation the permeated species are usually removed from the downstream side under a relatively low vapor pressure, for example by evacuation with a vacuum pump. As far as this condition is fulfilled, the evaporation step can be considered to be much faster than sorption or diffusion. Hence evaporation does not contribute to permselectivity. Therefore the separation by pervaporation results from the differences in the preferential sorption of the individual components of a mixture into the membrane together with the diffusion rates through the membrane. This postulation implies that both sorption and diffusion phenomena have to be accounted for to understand the physico-chemical nature of the pervaporation separation process.
The water-vapor sorption isotherms of viscose rayon and of modified viscose rayon were studied to elucidate the change of sorptivity by the DMDHEU resin finish. To determine the sorption isotherms, moisture regains of the samples were measured at various humidities. The sorption isotherms were determined by the BET and GAB multilayer adsorption theories. The adsorption isotherm of the starting rayon was Brunauer Type II while with increasing resin content those of the DMDHEU-treated rayon became progressively more like Type IV. The DMDHEU-treated samples appeared to be hydrophilic due to the hydrophilicity of DMDHEU although moisture regains at higher humidities markedly decreased because of an impediment in swelling by crosslinkings. The $W_{m}$ value and surface area of crosslinked samples increased with increasing resin content. VR-R-6 which was the most heavily crosslinked viscose rayon had the highest $W_{m}$ and surface area values among all the samples. Relative sorption hysteresis was decreased as humidity increased for all samples. The untreated viscose rayon appeared to have a higher value than the DMDHEU-treated rayon.
Water vapor sorption by sodium alginate-based films may result in swelling and conformational changes in the molecular structure and affecting the water vapor barrier properties. Sodium alginate film specimens were dried in a vacuum freeze dryer and their moisture content was determined by an air-oven method. The water vapor absorption was determined at two different levels of water activities (0.727 and 0.995) and at three temperatures (10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$), and kinetics were analyzed using a simple empirical model. Reasonably good straight lines were obtained with plotting of 1/($m-m_0$) vs 1/t. It was found that water vapor absorption kinetics of sodium alginate films were accurately described by a simple empirical model. The rate of water vapor sorption increased with increase in temperature and it showed temperature dependency following the Arrhenius equation. The activation energies varied from 49.18$\sim$149.55 kJ/mol depending on the relative humidity.
We examined the effect of individual sweating responses on thermoregulatory responses induced by heat of sorption, immediately after the onset of sweating. The present study consists of two experiments. In experiment 1, made of 100% cotton (C) and 100% polyester (P) clothing were exposed in the chamber at ambient temperature (Ta) of $27.2^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity (rh) raised from 50% to 95% at five different increase rates of environmental vapor pressure (VP). The increase rate of clothing surface temperature (Tcs), peak Tcs and peak time showed significant correlation with the increase rate of environmental VP in C-clothing (p<0.05). In experiment 2, seven female subjects were studied during leg water immersion ($35-41^{\circ}C$) for 70min in Ta of 27.2 and 50%rh. There were significant positive correlations in the increase rate of clothing microclimate VP vs. changes in Tcs, skin blood flow, mean skin temperature and mean body temperature (p<0.05). The present results showed that individual clothing microclimate VP had significant effects on thermoregulatory responses induced by heat of sorption wearing C ensembles.
