There's an opinion that it may be a combination of change of values and social economic factors that caused low fertility of Korean society. This study intends to analyze actual conditions of family children values and gender role centered on university students in a marriageable age so draw a policy implication for overcoming low fertility. Main findings of this study are like following. First, as for analysis of childbirth intention shows average score of $3.35{\pm}1.142$ presented sex distinction that men have a higher tendency to women. Second, in gender role attitudes, it shows that gender role related on women's social activities($2.06{\pm}0.739$), traditional gender role in family($2.41{\pm}0.789$) influence on childbirth intention (p<0.001). Third, in family children values indicates moderate scores($2.95{\pm}0.648$) that son's position in family ($2.33{\pm}0.911$), relation between children and parents($2.80{\pm}1.050$), individual's position in family($3.56{\pm}0.671$) influence on childbirth intention(p<0.000) in the traditional values. Measures against low fertility will prove effective when family values are established favorable to marriage, childbirth, rearing, gender equality is settled in a society as a whole and related systems.
A nutrition survey of elementary school children in urban areas was undertaken in December of 1986, to investigate nutritional status in relation to school lunch programs. A total of 284 children in the grades from the 4th to the 6th of Myongsudai elementary school, consisting of three groups ; 1) children taking school lunch every day, 2) children taking school lunch intermittently, 3) children not taking at all, were studied. The group of children taking school lunch every day showed higher values of dietary intake, anthropometric measurements and biochemical findings, compared to those of the other groups, in general. These data underscore the necessity of nation wide school lunch programs for whole school children of Korea.
The purpose of this study was to determine the probability of overweight throughout childhood in relation to the presence of overweight at birch or in early childhood, and presence of overweight in children's parents. Weight and height measures were collected at birth and at ages of 7, 10, 12 years from 655 6th grade primary schoolchildren. Childhood overweight was defined as a body mass index at or above the 85th percentile for age and sex, and overweight in children's parents as a body mass index at or above 27. The prevalence of overweight increased with age of the children. Overweight at birth was not associated with overweight at 12 years of ages. However, overweight at 12 years old was already related to overweight at 7 years old. In comparison to non-overweight peers, overweight children at ages 7(OR = 7.64, 95% CI = 4.32-13.51) and 10 years(OR = 19.69, 95% CI = 11.42-33.94) had a higher rick of becoming overweight at 12 years of age. Among children who was overweight at age 7years, 60.7% remained overweight 5 years later, Yearly increment in BMI of overweight children was larger than that of non-obese children (1.15-1.65kg/m$^2$vs 0.50-0.71kg/m$^2$. As compared with the lower case in mealy increment of BMI, the probability of being overweight at age of 12 years was greater in higher case. BMI values at age 7years were positively correlated with BMI values at age of 10 and 127ear,i, and with annual increments in BMI. But those relationships with birth weight were not observed. Children were at greater risk for overweight if at least ogle parent was overweight. The odds ratio for child overweight associated with maternal overweight was 2.41(95% CI = 1,13-5.IS), and those associated with paternal overweight 1.70(95% CI = 0.92-3.17). And parents' BMIs were positively correlated with children's BMI values and yearly BMI increment. In conclusion, overweight at early childhood and annual inclement in BMI can be important in predicting the prevalence of overweight and the risk that overweight will remain after 7 years of age. The risk of being overweight throughout the childhood increases by the parents'overweight.
Objectives: This study was taken to investigate factors related to dental caries in deciduous teeth of preschool children. Methods : this study was completed by oral examination on 623 kindergarten pupils and questionnaire on their mothers in Sangju city from April 1 to May 20, 2001. Study design is Cross-sectional Study. Results: The mean values for decayed teeth indexed(dt index), filled teeth index(ft index), and decayed and filled teeth index(dft index) was 2.46, 1.85, and 4.30 respectively. 2.05 for girl was significantly lower than 2.77 of boy in gender (p<0.01). As child ren got older, values were higher(0.7 and 2.84 of three years old, 1.6 and 4.01 of four, 2.42 and 5.02 of five) in ft and dft index(p<0.001). Also, Mother age was almost same, that is, 4.12 dft value for 30~34 years was smaller than 6.17 for above forties(p<0.001). 2.07 and 4.68 for mothers who graduated from high school were higher than 1.36 and 3.34 for university in the ft and dft index(p<0.05), that is, the more they had a high educational level, the lower they got a values. Value 2.76 for children who had non cariogenic food was lower than 5.11 for those who had cariogenic food in dft index(p<0.001). In dft index, 3.82 of children who have learned the education on oral health from mother frequently have lower than 45 of children who have never learned (p<0.05). The ft value of children who had a snack food with mother(1.29) was a smaller than children had it at out of home(1.97)(p<0.05). The variables related 10 dft index were children and mothers age, educational level, and kinds of snack food (p<0.05). Conclusion : This study reveals that younger girl, younger mother, higher educational level, and non cariogenic foods showed lower dft index.
Background: We analyzed the changes in QT dispersion (QTd) in children with Kawasaki disease (KD), and determined the presence of repolarization abnormality in these children even in the absence of coronary artery abnormalities. Methods: Ninety-one children with KD and 20 healthy controls were enrolled in this retrospective study. Serial echocardiographic and electrocardiographic (ECG) measurements in the beginning of treatment, 2nd month and 6th month after the diagnosis were compared. Fifty-one of 91 children had at least 2 serial ECG data. The number of patients who had 3 consecutive ECG data was 23. Results: Among the 67 KD patients with no coronary artery changes, the consecutive mean QTd values were 41.86 ms, 37.84 ms, and 25.47 ms, respectively (26 ms for controls). In the analysis of changes among KD patients without coronary artery abnormalities, QTd showed a significant decrease with time (p=0.01). Especially, the 1st month and the 6th month QTd values were significantly different (p=0.028). The mean QTd values in KD patients with coronary artery changes were significantly higher than those in KD patients with no coronary artery changes at each time (1st, 2nd, and 6th month exam). Conclusion: QTd is significantly increased in children during the early stage of KD. Repolarization abnormality may exist during the acute stage of KD, regardless of the echocardiographic changes.
This study was about to investigate the characteristics of elementary school students' feet growth, comparing and analyzed the measured values and the index values of 3D scan data. As the results from analyzing the measured values, the all measurement items excluding 'Toe 5 angle' showed some significant differences among the age classes, knowing that the elementary school students' feet were continually grown. Although, the items of length, thickness, width, height and circumference indicate some rapid growth of feet at 11 years old, but it appears slowing growth of 'Foot width' after the age of 11 years old. The angle item didn't show any sequential differences according to ages. As the results from analyzing the index values, the children in higher grades have longer 'Toe 5', thicker ankles, wider and thicker the superior part of feet than the children in lower grades. For the superior and the middle part of feet were lowly raised, their Arch height was low and thick. The inferior part of feet showed narrow width and higher height. Giving that the Medial ball width was wide and the Toe 1 angle is high for the children in higher grades, it is expected that the Metatarsophalangeal I might be more projected than that of children in lower grades. Likewise, knowing that the male students' feet shape was bigger than female students' feet from the result that the male students' index values were higher.
Objectives The objectives of this study were to evaluate the correlations between the indices of obesity and percentage body fat by bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA). Also, this study was designed to define the cut off values of percentage body fat by BIA which would represent BMI and degree of obesity in order to detect overweight and obesity in preschool children. Methods The height and weight of 683 children aged four to six years old were measured. Also, percentages of body fat were measured by BIA. Results There were high correlations between the boy's body fat percentages and degree of obesity(r=790). Also, there were high correlations between the girl's body fatpercentages and BMI(r=778). The cut off values of body fat percentage, which would correspond to those of BMI percentiles, were calculated by ROC curve analysis. To classify as an overweight, the correspondent cut off values of body fat percentage were 19.55% in boys and 22.35% in girls. For obesity, the cut off values were 28.80% in boys and 27.60% in girls. The cut off values of body fat percentage, which would correspond to degree of obesity were calculated by ROC curve analysis. To classify as an overweight, the correspondent cut off values of body fat percentage were 19.75% in boys and 22.35% in girls. For obesity, the cut off values were 29.05% in boys and 28.75% in girls. Conclusions According to the BMI criteria by the Korean pediatrics society in 2007, the most appropriate cut off values of body fat percentage in for four to six years old children were follows; for boys, 19.55% considered as overweight, and 28.80% as obese while for girls, 22.35% considered as overweight and 27.60% as obese. According to suggested degree of obesity criteria, the most appropriate cut off values of body fat percentage in for four to six old children were were follows; For boys, 19.75% was considered as overweight, and 29.05% as obesity. For girls, 22.35% was considered as overweight, and 28.75% as obese.
The purpose of this study is to clarify that parents' values and beliefs in bringing up their children deeply relate to their children's problem behaviors, The subjects are 267 preschoolers attending kindergarten in Daegue area, Statistical techniques are Two Way ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson's Correlation and Regression, The results of this study are as follows: (1) Problem behaviors of preschoolers are significantly related to parents' values, Preschoolers whose parents have a higher level of values have a lower level of problem behaviors. (2) Problem behaviors of preschoolers are significantly related to parents' beliefs, Preschoolers whose parents have a higher level of beliefs have a higher level of problem behaviors. (3) The Multiple Regression analysis shows that parents' parenting values and beliefs are crucially predictive of preschoolers' problem behaviors. Especially, parents' parenting beliefs is more relevant to preschoolers' problem behaviors than parents' parenting values is.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family values and expectations for social support on marriage intention among male and female college students. This study involved 427 male and female college students attending colleges located in Seoul. The results are as follows: First, college students in this study tended to have relatively traditional family values in sub-scales including value of children, value of marriage and gender role attitude. Moreover, college students were found to have relatively high expectations toward social support and marriage intention. Second, male students had a higher traditional tendency for all sub-scales of family values including value of children, value of marriage and gender role attitude compared to female students. In addition, they tended to have higher expectations on social support and marriage intention than female students. Third, a greater intention to marry was seen in male students having more traditional values of children and a higher expectation toward future income. The value of children was found to be the most influential factor on marriage intention of male students in the present study. On the contrary, marriage intention was higher in female students the older they were, the greater the expectation of informal support, the lower the expectation of future income, and the more the traditional attitudes toward marriage. Informal support was found to be the most influential factor on marriage intention of female students in the present study.
This study aimed to understand communicative and socialization practices of immigrant bilingual families in everyday learning situations by examining interactions between parents and children in the United States. Drawn on language socialization theory and socio-cultural factors influencing immigrants, this study explored how three Korean American mothers struggled as they helped their children with homework by interviewing the mothers and observing mother-child interaction during homework time. The study paid attention to the emotional values of immigrant parents that they tried to teach their children who are members in two distinctive communities, such as Korean American and mainstream American. The findings showed that parental socialization practices had effects on children's emotional and social competence and at the same time the socialization process was bidirectional. Mothers started with Korean values, but they faced challenges with the English language, different demands for American homework, and children's rejection of their attempts. Mothers needed to change their strategy and borrow American ways of keeping emotional distance from their children by acknowledging their independence. Their struggles are discussed with attention to their language choice and culture.
