The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It also has similar characteristics to Ti in inducing bony ingrowth. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb ($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40 wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.

In this paper, DC degradation of ZnO varistor sintered in the atmospheres of nitrogen and oxygen was investigated. The content of $SiO_2$ containing 0.0, 0.2, 0.5 mol% respectively was addicted for the improvement of degradation property. ZnO varistor was fabricated in the special electrical furnace which had the vacuum system. The temperature and the voltage for the DC degradation test were $115{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, $0.85V_{1mA/cm^2}$. The time conditions for this test were 0, 2, 4, 8 hours and Current-voltage analysis is used to determine nonlinear coefficients($\alpha$). Frequency analysis are accomplished for the understanding of electrical properties as DC degradation test. In this experiment, We concluded that nonlinear coefficient decreased as the amount of $SiO_2$ addition increased, but degradation rate coefficient increased as the amount of $SiO_2$ addition increased. Also, degradation test with the analysis of equivalent circuit showed that the degradation phenomenon of ZnO varistor wasn't linearity.

Corrosion characteristics of Ti, Ti/Cr coated and plasma-nitrided surface for stainless steel containing Ti have been studied. Stainless steels containing 0.09-0.92wt% Ti were fabricated by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1hr at 105$0^{\circ}C$. Ti and Cr coatings were done on solutionized stainless steel surface by EB-PVD. The Ti coated specimen were coated by Cr and were nitrided by plasma at $450^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. Microstructure and phase analysis were performed using SEM, OM and EDX. Corrosion behavior of the coated specimen was investigated by electrochemical test. The coated surface was of fine columnar structure. The Ti/Cr coated surface was denser than the Ti coated and the Ti coated-nitrided surfaces. The corrosion and pitting potential increased in proportion to the Ti content, coating temperature, coating thickness and formation of stable oxide film. The current density in active and passive region decreased in the case of Ti/Cr coated sample and Ti coated-nitrided samples. Especially the plasma nitrided specimen after Ti coating have a good corrosion resistance compared with the Ti coated specimen. The number and size of pits decreased as Ti content of matrix increased.
The effects of heat treatments in Al-Si-Mg alloys on the microstructure and hardness have been investigated by the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM), and Rockwell hardness tester. The materials of various compositions are melted in a vacuum induction furnace under argon atmosphere. Five different Al alloys are prepared from commercial purity aluminium, magnesium and Al-25Si alloy. Two types of aging treatments are performed: i) Isothermal aging of the specimens at $150^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. ii) Pre-aging of the specimens at $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, and followed by final-aging at $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. After the heat treatments, Rockwell hardness are measured with all the specimens.
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate mechanical properties of the porous Ti implants according to porosity. Porous Ti implant will be had properties similar to human bone such as microstructure and mechanical properties. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders(below $25{\mu}m$, $25{\sim}32{\mu}m$, $32{\sim}38{\mu}m$, and $38{\sim}45{\mu}m$) in a high vacuum furnace. Specimen's diameter and height were 4mm and 40 mm. Surface and sectional images of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM). Porosity and average pore size were evaluated by mercury porosimeter. Young's modulus and tensile strength were evaluated by universal testing machine(UTM). Results: Porosity of Implant was increased according to larger particle size of the powder. Boundary portions of particles are sintered fully and others portions were formed pore. Young's modulus was decreased by formed porous structure. Tensile strength was decreased according to larger the particle size of the powder, but higher than human bone. Conclusion: If prepared by adjust the porosity of the porous Ti implant will be able to resolve the stress shielding phenomenon.

Metal electrode materials for plasma display panel should have low electrical resistivity in order to maintain stable gas discharge and have fast response time. They should also hae good film uniformity adhesion and thermal stability. In this study Cr/Cu/Cr metal electrode structure is formed by DC magnetron sputtering. Cr and Cu films were deposited on ITO coated glasses with various DC power density and main pressures as the major parameters. After metal electrodes were formed a heat treatment was followed at 55$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in a vacuum furnace. The intrinsic stress of the sputtered Cr film passed a tensile stress maximum decreased and then became compressive with further increasing DC power density. Also with increasing the main pressure stress turned from compression to tension. After heat the treatment the electrical resistivity of the sputtered Cu film of 2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness prepared at 1 motor with the applied power density of 3.70 W/cm$^2$was 2.68 $\mu$$\Omega$.cm With increasing the main pressure the DC magnetron sputtered Cu film became more open structure. The heat treatment decreased the surface roughness of the sputtered Cr/Cu/Cr metal electrodes.
This study aims at investigating the effect of heat treatment conditions on the dry sliding wear behavior of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings. Ni-based self-flux alloy powders were sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate and then heat-treated at 700, 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in a vacuum furnace. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using sliding speed of 0.4 m/s and applied load of 6 N. AISI 52100 ball(diameter 8 mm) was used as counterparts. Microstructure and wear behavior of both as-sprayed and heat-treated Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX), electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). It was revealed that microstructure and wear behavior of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings were much influenced by heat treatment conditions.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate polarization characteristics of heat-treated Ni-based self-flux alloy coating in alkaline solution. Ni-based self-flux alloy powder was sprayed to a steel substrate using flame spray process, and heat treatments were performed in a vacuum furnace at $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. After heat treatments, corrosion tests were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 8 and pH 13. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be analyzed from polarization curve. Anticorrosive effect of heat-treated coating at solution with pH 8 was relatively greater than at solution with pH 13. Heat-treated coating at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest anti-corrosion characteristics in alkaline solution.
Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by the sintering of spherical Ti powders in a high vacuum furnace. To increase their surface area and biocompatibility, anodic oxidation and a hydrothermal treatment were then applied. Electrolytes in a mixture of glycerophosphate and calcium acetate were used for the anodizing treatment. The resulting oxide layer was found to have precipitated in the phase form of anatase $TiO_2$ and nano-scaled hydroxyapatite on the porous Ti implant surface. The porous Ti implant can be modified via an anodic oxidation method and a hydrothermal treatment for the enhancement of the bioactivity, and current multi-surface treatments can be applied for use in a dental implant system.

The boron-doped polycrystalline silicon films which can be used in pressure sensors were fabricated in a high-vacuum resistance heating evaporator. Poly-Si films were deposited on quartz substrates at various temperatures and the boron was doped to the silicon film in a diffusion furnace using BN wafer. The silicon films deposited at $500^{\circ}C$ was amorphous, began to show crystalline at $600^{\circ}C$, and became polycrystalline at $700^{\circ}C$. After doping boron at $900^{\circ}C$for 10 minutes, the resistivity of the films was in the range of $0.1{\Omega}cm~1.5{\Omega}cm$, the boron density was $9.4\times10^{15}~2.1\times{10}^{17}cm^{-3}$, and the grain size was $107{\AA}~191{\AA}$.
